Weekending- Pizza and Pickleball and Parks x2
Used the last of the yeast in this jar that is well past its expiration date. One would kind of think that if any item is going to be unusable past its expiration date, it would be an item that is considered to be "living." But the yeast foamed when proofed and the dough rose beautifully. (But then again, existentially, how can something living actually have a predetermined expiration date??)
Pizza turned out great (and I succeeded in not making various kitchen surfaces/ floors too flour-y in the endeavor) and of course it was great to see Alyssa (so tanned!) and hear about her trip.
Alyssa’s pizza- I didn’t get a picture of ours. I added Mike’s Hot Honey to ours which made it really good!
Late Saturday morning, we headed to the Patricia Allyn Park to play pickleball (PB). The game has become pretty popular around these parts. Abby started playing it with friends during this past school year and Alyssa started playing it this summer. Both girls play with friends and with their boyfriends. Abby wants to improve- her boyfriend is very good at it, and they play as a couple against other couples and Abby doesn’t want to be the weak link. Alyssa had to work so just the three of us went and played.
I brought my camera a took a few pictures
Donnie and I both knew the basic rules and had asked questions as to various differences with tennis (he and I had never played PB before) but there was something about being on the actual court that engendered even more questions/ clarifications. Abby knows all the rules! It’s fun to learn from your kids :).
Donnie is a really good tennis player and picked up PB skills pretty easily.
Pickleball but make it a precious picture with your cute paddle and pertinacious papa!
And what about me? Were these two things mutually exclusive?
Welllll, I played! Yes, I hobbled on the court. Of course, I could not be competitive and my adversary across the net tried to lob the balls at me so as to decrease the amount that I had to move rather than try to score points against me. It felt good to try to move fast... even though I couldn't.
This might be my favorite picture of me ever- face obscured by hair and play not too daunted by a yet to be healed Achilles tendon.
Power to the she booted!
For dinner, we met Jacob in Liberty Township at a restaurant called Cowbell Sally’s. It is owned by the same family that owns the eclectically decorated and very unique tacos, Agave & Rye. We enjoyed our food and will definitely be back!
We shopped at just a couple of stores afterward.
For all of our terrarium needs 😆
On our way home, I felt the need for something a little sweet, so we stopped for a shake. The lady making my cookies and cream shake started to put a lid on it when she was done making it. I was like, “I’d really like some whipped cream.” And she was like, “But then I can’t put this lid on it.” Ummmmm, I can handle not having a lid; not having whipped cream on my shake seemed the far greater loss...
Sunday was a great church service followed by chatting with friends we'd not seen in a long time.
Jacob ended up coming home for a good part of the day. He and Donnie planned to watch game two of the NBA finals. Abby had to work at North Park at an event- a symphony was playing. We decided to go to North Park to see Abby and play pickleball with Jacob at North Park.
The park got some new playground equipment.
The music sounded great! We could hear it while playing pickleball.
Once home, the guys ordered pizza. More hot honey pizza for Donnie! I just wanted a cookie from Donatos.
We received an email about Abby confirming she made the Presidents’s List (she was almost positive she’d made it but prior to this we didn’t know with 100% certainty). Proud of Abby for being a very diligent college student! Her internship with the city isn’t a full forty hours a week. I’m glad she has this summer to have a decent bit of time to unwind and relax.

Congrats to your daughter! I have a friend who teaches in the business dept. at Miami. We play pickleball here, our neighborhood has courts. I can't imagine playing with a boot on though! There have been a couple of serious injuries in our neighborhood group, men who can't let a ball go by, and I tell my hubs I'm not rolling my ankle or suffering a concussion to go after a ball. I like hot honey on a pizza too. Sounds like you had a nice weekend!
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness, now that I KNOW how bad ankle/foot/leg injuries can be, I feel like I am going to be tentative with every life activity here on out. It felt good to try to move fast... even though I was unsuccessful. Miami has a great business school- your friend must be accomplished to have a teaching job there. Abby started off in business but for a whole host of reasons, left the business school after the first year.
DeleteYour kids all seem to really good people; I read peoples' blogs with older kids and I can only hope mine launch and do well! My oldest is about to be a senior so we're almost to the time for all that to begin. Looks like a nice weekend!
ReplyDeleteI would tell you that his senior year will go by quickly but you likely already know that! My kids are pretty good but I´m pretty biased :). I hate to sound too braggy (though I do brag) and I would never post about any really poor decisions the kids make (I assume most people who blog are like that?) so maybe lots of blogger kids seem better than they are. I do think my kids are great, don´t get me wrong, but they have done unblogworthy things...
DeleteComing from the link up! Looks like a fun weekend! I love hot honey on a pizza, too. And congratulations to your daughter on making the President's list- that's awesome!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Maddie! On the one hand, I don´t like to be a braggy person but she works so hard and is super diligent. I feel like she deserves a shout out :). Hot honey pizza is so good... You can always buy the hot honey and add it to your pizza at home!
DeleteCongrats to Abby and your newly minted graduate. My oldest just graduated with Honors as a chemistry major and is entering a fully funded PhD program in Engineering. I do the same bragging in your comments section and on my blog when I am proud of them. If I wanted people to actually read my blog, I could write about the poor decisions that kids make from time to time but that is not my story to tell. I will tell you and Donnie over pickleball someday. I played tennis in college and Melizza thinks I will be the master hip breaker on the court in Miami when I am older but I am still too mobile for the sport. Also, pickleball is weird to me at the moment despite being the fastest growing sport. Right now my sports focus is on watching Lucy play soccer and attend college ID camps. Someday.
ReplyDeleteCongrats to Jack! His accomplishments are impressive and it sounds like he will do great things. I feel ambivalent about bragging- it was one thing when the kids were younger and it was like, ¨so and so came in first place in x.¨ When they are older, something feels a little more off about it. I mean, I obviously do brag but I try to temper that by not doing it too much and by pointing out the hard work that went into and not just talking about the result itself? Healthy pride is good, I guess, is my point and hopefully bragging in a public place isn´t too off putting to anyone reading. I completely agree that stories of the kids´ poor decisions are not mine to tell...
DeleteThe only thing that truly matters is that the kids turn out to be good people who are kind, generous, hard working and productive citizens. Those accomplishments are important and impressive but the greatest accomplishment is living a good life independent of us.
DeleteYep, you´re right!
DeleteIt looks like such a fun weekend-- and a delicious one too. Yay for getting to play pickleball even with your boot on.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Joanne! I was pleased as punch to be able to play even a little bit!
DeleteBusy, busy weekend and so much fun! Congratulations to Abby!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Pamela! I think we just picked up a hobby, lol!
DeleteCongrats to Abby! Yeah! Also you and Donnie look like stellar athletes- very impressive :)
ReplyDeleteThanks, Holly! I think that Donnie looks like a stellar athlete!
