Wednesday Hodgepodge
1. What do you think has remained the same about you your whole life? How has your perception of yourself changed over time?
My faith has remained the same my entire life. I have always believed in God and that Jesus died for my sins. I have always believed that the Bible is true and is God’s word. I know that it sounds weird to say “always” but I was brought up in an evangelical Christian home and taught about God from day one. I believed it early as well. That isn’t to say that I have always walked closely with the Lord or been obedient to him or have not had many questions but I have never not believed.
My perception of myself hasn’t changed fundamentally. I have always viewed myself as a flawed person who tries to do her best.
2. What was the first thing you learned how to cook? Do you prefer to cook or bake?
First thing- that is a good question. I think it was spaghetti.
I definitely prefer baking over cooking. I associate baking with good or special times since I usually only bake for an occasion whether big occasion like a birthday or small like a cookout with friends. Cooking is done at least five days a week for dinner, so it seems more like of a chore or something that has to be done.
3. What are some of your current priorities in this season of life? Elaborate.
Playing an active (and hopefully positive!) role in the life of our young adults kids- while technically all of my kids are adults, they are all under age 25. Aren’t those under age twenty five not in possession of a fully formed frontal cortex? So, I can hopefully be a good influence, be there physically and emotionally for them, etc.
Getting a part time job pretty soon- I am fortunate that I don’t need to work full time. When the nest is empty and the leg isn’t boot ensconced, it will be hard to justify not working at all. So, I will look for a job with lots of flexibility and one that uses some of my skills/ talents. (Not 100% sure what those are, lol.)
4. How much time do you spend on your hair each day or, put another way, what's your hair care routine? Do you get it cut regularly or just whenever the mood strikes? Do you go to the same stylist every time? Do you tell your stylist everything? Any other beauty treatments you indulge in throughout the year?
I spend very little time on my hair. I straighten it if I am going out in public. I wear it in a ponytail or pulled off my face if I will be home during the day.
I do not like to go to the salon to get my hair done so I go only when absolutely necessary. I don’t care for the small talk, the mirrors all around, the time spent there, etc. My sister trims my hair and colors it when I see her. She does such a good job and I love that I don’t have to go anywhere when she does it. When I do go to a salon, I make small talk with the stylist. The last time I got my hair done at the salon in May, I liked my stylist a lot. She was super young, but we had a lot in common. However, I did not like how my hair turned looked when it was done, and it cost soooo much money.
5. What is the most awe-inspiring place you've visited?
I still have not gotten to the Grand Canyon- I *think* that will be the most awe-inspiring place after I see it.
BUT, that is not the question. So I will say Niagara Falls- the Canadian side (I have never been to the American side but “they” say that the Canadian side is the best.)
My sister has lived within thirty minutes of Niagara Falls (in Canada) for the past sixteen years. We don’t go to the Falls at each visit but we have gone numerous times. Hearing the roar of the water as it tumbles down is awe inspiring!
Pictures from my first visit back in 2000
A view of the American side- this was from a visit in 2009 I think

Boot begone TODAY!!! Hasta la vista, le boot

Yay for no more boot!! That is going to feel so good I'm sure. I have been to both sides of Niagara-- the Canadian side is the best. Best views, much cleaner and safer feeling, and waay more to do. I used to prefer cooking to baking since I was not nearly exacting enough for my baking recipes to all turn out as successful as I'd like but now I like them equally.... not that I get to bake much since Alec likes to take over whenever we have a reason to bake anything. It was fun making his graduation party cupcakes since that was all me!
ReplyDeleteI can see how you don´t bake as much with Alec around! I am sure that making items for his party was special- the cupcakes you made for his party turned out so cute :). I wish that I liked to cook more than I do.
DeleteI know you are excited for no boot!! I've never been to Niagara Falls but I imagine they are awe inspiring.
ReplyDeleteSo excited- my appointment is soon so I am still in it for now but cannot wait for the green light to take it off! The Falls are as awe- inspiring as they sound!
DeleteI feel much the same as you in #1. I grew up in a home where my parents faith was front and center and as a result I don't remember ever not believing. Of course at some point you have to take it on yourself, but that foundation was such a gift. I love your Niagara pictures, your kids are so cute and I've only seen them on your blog as 'grown'. I admit I went down a bit of a rabbit hole looking for my pics and the one of my daughter as a teenerager at Canterbury has really got me thinking. Feels like yesterday but also long ago. Enjoy today and your foot freedom!!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Joyce! Yes, for sure, faith isn´t something you inherit but decide for yourself, but that foundation was a great gift. I am grateful for every picture that I took of my kids when they were younger! You went on some great trips and I´m sure you have great pictures of the places you went to with your family.
DeleteGlad the boot is coming off! And I totally forgot about Niagara; I last went when I was 11 so maybe that's why. We went to both sides too.
ReplyDeleteThat´s cool that you went to both sides. I want to go to the NY side. I think I´ve heard that you can walk from one side to the other? But maybe not because how would that work with the border crossing? I don´t know but I would like to see the American side. I hope you get everything done today- your trip sounds amazing!
DeleteI’ve also been a Christian my entire life. My dad is a Baptist pastor, so I was raised in it. As an adult, I grew much more spiritually mature thank goodness, and I am continuing to learn every day. I don’t spend much time on my hair - ten minutes a day maybe? I don’t color it, and I rarely cut it. I just cut it a week ago and love it though!
ReplyDeleteThat´s great that you love your hair cut. I wish I liked my last professional cut/ color- you win some and lost some I guess! How wonderful to be a preacher´s kid even though I know some who felt pressure to be perfect since a lot of eyes were on them. But how great to have someone that close to you be the leader of a church.
DeleteOh I LOVE Niagara Falls- it really is one of the most majestic places! Can't wait to see what kind of job you land AND you have many talents my friend XO
ReplyDeleteThanks, Holly! It seems a lot to ask for in a job and I don´t even know exactly what kind of job I will look for. I will be searching for a unicorn, that´s for sure!!
DeleteYay for the boot! So happy for you Maria! Like you, I am thankful I was born into a Christian home and don't remember a time where my faith wasn't a part of my life. You always are cooking and baking good things! My kids are both young adults, but under 25 too, so I can relate. I have always wanted to go to Niagra Falls and hope I can get there some day.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Marilyn! Each stage of parenthood is different. I am loving have young adults as kids though of course I miss a lot of the moments when they were young. You should definitely go to Niagara Falls- you would love it!
DeleteNo more boot, yay! Great post. I'd forgotten about Niagara Falls; we took a trip there when we dropped Sophia at horse camp in western New York and it was very awe-inspiring.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Pamela! Isn´t it great? You have truly been to both ends of the country, haven´t you? That is so neat!
DeleteReally? Good-bye boot day!! I am SO behind on blog reading and trying to catch and, well looky there, I drop by on such an exciting day! I am so happy for you. What a long adventure that has been. Hooray. I, too, do not like small talk and think it is one of the biggest negatives of going to the salon. Oh, and all the mirrors, too. Ugh. And I hope to get a job soon. Not for the money and certainly not for the stress - but just to use my brain and whatever talents I still have:) Hope you find just the right one for you! Hope the rest of your week goes well. PS - enjoy shaving that leg!!:)
ReplyDeleteThanks, Jennifer! I am glad I´m not alone on the not liking all the small talk... and the mirrors! We can look for jobs virtually together- well, you know what I mean- we can encourage each other. My boot is OFF and it feels amazing. A bit painful but I will take that over the boot!!
DeleteWoohoo! Boot be gone! If you want to see something really spectacular go to Haines or Skagway Alaska. Cruise, drive, fly, whatever. You would not regret it!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Jim! Since getting the boot off, I can´t stop walking despite some pain!! I have heard of Skagway, AK. Will have to check out photos of it. It seems like a long shot that I would get there but never say never...
DeleteYou felt about the boot like I did about the shoulder brace after my rotator cuff surgery. Glad it's off and you can start recovering fully.
ReplyDeleteNiagara Falls is pretty and so is the Grand Canyon.
Thank you, Debby! hope you didn´t have to wear your shoulder brace for long. But I´m sure it was a sweet relief to shed it! That is how I am feeling- so much relief and thankfulness :).
DeleteI bet you will be yelling "FREEDOM" when that boot comes off. I feel the same way about the salon, and my husband trims my hair most of the time. The Grand Canyon really is impressive, and I would add Yellowstone to the list too. Hope you have a good day!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Tanya! It took all I had in me to not shout for joy when I took the boot off at the doctor´s office!! Such a great feeling to walk with both feet on the ground. That is cool that your husband trims your hair. I love it when my sister does mine- I just see her so seldom that sometimes I have to get it done professionally. I would love to see Yellowstone as well as the Grand Canyon!!
DeleteHip hip hooray for that boot coming off! Loved your answer to number 1. Niagara Falls is very awe-inspiring. I'd enjoy seeing it again in person and yes, the Canadian side is a better view. Hope all goes well with your boot off!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Ellen! Yes, so far so good with no boot. I hope to see the American side of the Falls but if I don´t, I will be ok with that :).
DeleteI love that your faith has remained the same. I'm certainly not much into cooking these days or baking. I would love to see Niagara Falls. Love the family photos. That will be wonderful to get rid of the boot.
ReplyDeleteThanks you, Debby! I am basking in joyy in not walking with it... I hope you get to see the Falls someday!
