Hodgepodge

1. What do you make more complicated than it needs to be?

Oh, you know, just about every facet of life!!

2. What impresses you?

What I lack in making things simple, I make up for in being very readily impressed with many things, people, experiences, etc. I could answer this many ways but I'm going to choose a specific way.  And that way is listing things that impress me about someone's character, rather than an immutable characteristic like having a beautiful singing voice or possessing athletic prowess.

From a secular standpoint, I'm impressed when I hear that someone has overcome a truly awful circumstance- abuse of some sort when younger yet the person did not grow up bitter about it but rather became a well adjusted adult.

I'm impressed when I hear about people giving of their time and money generously.

I'm impressed when I hear of someone risking his or her life to try to save a stranger.

I'm impressed when I see or hear of athletes doing something selfless during an event. Have you seen videos of runners stopping to help a fallen runner get up and cross the finish line??

From an eternal standpoint, I'm impressed when Christians remain faithful even when it costs them everything, including their lives. While some people "convert" to the faith of their country's captives (think, "covert to religion X or I'll behead you"), others of faith are willing to die rather than "convert" to a "religion" under duress. Also Christians do exist (likely not many) in places like North Korea where being caught with a Bible is enough to send entire families to labor/death camps; think of the courage to have faith in the face of such dire consequences if caught.

In the West, for the most part, Christians are free to practice Christianity. Ridicule is the worst thing, by and large that Christians face for overtly stating that the Bible is God's word and that everything in the Bible is true.

3. On a scale of 1-10 how picky of an eater are you?  (1=extremely and 10=not at all) If you had to eat a meal made entirely of one color what color would you choose?

I'd give myself a generic five on the picky eater scale. I do consider myself somewhat picky due to not liking a variety of healthy food like vegetables. However, I eat leftovers willingly and will try most foods at least once.

I think I've overcome a decent bit of the odd idiosyncrasies about my own food upbringing from the bad to the good. For example, I grew up in a household almost entirely devoid of dairy products (no sour cream, mayo, yogurt, cream cheese, cheese casseroles, cream dips, etc) so I had to develop a taste or develop a dislike when I tried these products for the first time as an adult. We also hardly ever ate out at sit down restaurants- I ate out maybe four times total before I left for college so for the most part, the only foods I was exposed to were the dishes my mom made.

I posted this picture the other day but I'm posting it again because of the manicotti on the plate. When I went to college and ate meals at the dorm, I was exposed to food that I had never so much as heard of. Manicotti was one such food. My mom didn't make Italian food except for spaghetti and I'd never eaten at an Italian restaurant before going to college. What a nice surprise manicotti was :). I could say that about a number of foods that I had for the first time in college.

4. What does balance in life mean to you? Does your life currently feel 'balanced'?

A balanced life to me is one where I spread my resources- both time and money out decently. My faith and family are the most important things to me and they accordingly receive the most resources (both time and money) from me. But also, I want to devote time to a meaningful(ish) part time job, to maintaining friendships, to keep up with hobbies and to have time for intelligent stimulus such as reading nonfiction or literary fiction on a regular basis.

My part time job (ending this week- can I get a woot-woot???) has done a bang up job of resulting in a bit of imbalance in my life. To wit, it's been a bit stressful which has impacted other areas and it's required me to wake up early, be gone from the house for hours at a time, etc. So life will hopefully become a lot more balanced soon.

5. If you could travel the world for a year what would be your first destination?

I'm not sure that I have a must have first destination in mind. I would for sure have countries/areas that I would  not want to miss. For instance, I'd want to visit almost every country in Europe at some point in the year.

6. Insert your own random thought here.

Remember when our heat went out in January in the coldest spell of the winter?

For "balance" (el oh el), I guess it makes sense that our AC is not working during the hottest weather we've had so far this year.

I mean why would a less than two year old HVAC system work effectively?

Why wouldn't the house be 80 degrees today (Tuesday)? And why wouldn't the company say that they have no idea when the part will come in to fix it? It's bringing back recollections to almost exactly five months ago except the problem then was with regard to heat.

Unfortunately, the temperature inside would climb two more degrees to a balmy 82 inside the house.

Almost exactly five months ago, the house was at 55 degrees. For the love.

Extreme frustration with the AC not working aside, we are grateful that the weather is taking a turn for the cool.

  1. Oh my gosh I am so sorry Maria- that is crazy about your HVAC system- just crazy! Anyway, I am so glad you got to expand your palette and try different Italian dishes like manicotti- yum!

    1. Thanks, Holly! I enjoyed my college experience in part because of all the new food I got to try!!

  2. I am not a happy camper when our air conditioner doesn't work properly. It is odd that it is less than 2 years old and you've already had a heating problem and now an air problem! I hope it is a quick and easy fix!!

    1. Thanks, Lisa! Unfortunately, it’s not a quick, easy or inexpensive fix. I was verbally told we wouldn’t have to pay for the fix (after initially being told we wouldn’t). I’ll believe we’re not on the hook for the bill when I see it….

  3. Oh UGH! to the ac not working. I hope you can get it all sorted quickly. My next door neighbors just had to do a huge repair to their system. We didn't eat out often when I was growing up but my mother was an excellent cook and made a wide variety of meals. I was a little picky as a child in that I didn't like many vegetables, but I eat and love them all now. Yay for the job coming to a happy completion!

    1. That’s cool that you were exposed to a wide variety of foods. My dad was a meat and potato kind of eater which worked well for my mom’s no dairy eating.

  4. No! I can't believe you are going through that again but in reverse with your HVAC system.
I love your answer about what impresses you and I totally agree.
I love that college exposed you to new foods. I need to look up what exactly manicotti is.
Your job is almost over! You provided a much-needed service, and you stuck it out. The nice thing about subbing is that you can't do it in the summer! I think you will really appreciate the ability to make your own schedule this summer more than usual after this sub experience.
    Yay!

    1. Oh my goodness, I feel exactly like I know how teachers feel at the end of a school year- except I’ve knee been at school two months!!

Manicotti is delicious if you love cheese! It was not on my non dairy eating mom’s menu plan…

    2. I looked it up and it means "little sleeves". That is so cute! I am going to make it! I might add meat for Tom but I don't really want to. I might have Italian sausage on the side. My husband thinks all meals need meat and I don't.

  5. That is a fantastic answer for #2! All of those things impress me too. Oh gosh! I did not know that Christianity is not allowed in North Korea!
Up until you mentioned Manicotti I had never heard of it.
I hope the last week at school goes well.
Oh no! I hope you get your AC fixed soon but do think of us next week when the temps are supposed to hit the 80f and keep rising and AC is not a thing. I will just be sat here melting. lol

    1. I had heard that AC is not super common in Europe. The house I grew up in did not have AC so I know what it feels like in the summer without it. I’ve read some harrowing memoirs from people who managed to escape North Korea. It’s a terrible regime.

  6. That is really an interesting tidbit, your food experience growing up. I never really thought about rural area children not being exposed to a variety of foods. I have friends who adopted a five-year-old from Latvia and he had never had hot or cold food so that was an adjustment when he first came to live with them. He grew up to be a chef :) And I find it funny that you don’t like vegetables and yet you’re so passionate about your garden!
UGH about the AC and YAY about it being the last week of school!!

    1. Well, I like a number of vegetables just not nearly all of them and unfortunately the ones I don’t like are the healthiest like broccoli and spinach. I feel like there were a few reasons I grew up with having only experienced a limited numbers of food. That’s really neat that your friend’s son ended up a chef!

  7. That was interesting to read about your childhood and going out to eat. Now I am wondering how many times I really went out to eat prior to college! That HVAC system clearly isn't working properly and I don't know that I could make it in a 80 degree home. I am thankful it is cooling off a bit and hopefully that part comes in soon. So sorry you guys are having to go through this again.

  9. Woot-woot about the job!! So frustrating about the HVAC. Isn't it funny how rarely we went out to eat growing up? I may have dined out a few more times than you did, but it just wasn't a think back then for our family like it is now.

    1. Thanks, Tanya! I feel like back then there weren’t many casual type restaurants like Chilis (at least not in the small towns near us). Though we still likely wouldn’t have gone out to eat much.

  10. I think it's a riot that out of the half dozen Hodgepodge answers I've read today nearly everyone has answered #1 in the same general way... I too tend to over complicate everything. I would be paralyzed with indecision on where/how to best tackle a year of travel but my list would be mighty long for sure..but first stop? I have no clue. I am so so sorry to read about your AC issues!!

  12. Are you kidding...no AC? Definitely not the kind of balance you need just now. I mean, it is hot. Hot here, at least. Close to 100 yesterday! But, yes, on a woot woot for finishing up that school job. Here's to rebalancing life a bit!:) We had several similar answers here! Brilliant minds. Oh, but why no dairy growing up? Was someone allergic? I basically raised my family on dairy. Or at least cheese. Cheese on everything!! (and my son HATES cheese....bless)!

    1. Your son hates cheese? What?? I strongly suspect my mom had a dairy allergy but she was never tested for it so as far she was concerned, she just didn’t like dairy products so they weren’t in our home. Thanks for the woot woot!! I am almost there, friend!

I am a bit unbalanced right now as we just arrived at our summer home. It takes a while to get settled. Especially because of our gardens and the weeding!
I am so sorry to hear about your furnace/Ac. What the heck?!
And this is your last week of school! Yahooooo!
Happy Dance for you this Friday! I‘ll be thinking of you. ☺️

What on earth is happening with your HVAC!? Sorry to hear about that, and I hope it's solved quickly. I guess for your sake, I'm glad that the weather cooled off a bit the last couple days.
Hope you're having a great week!

  17. I also could not believe the embarrassment of riches that was the cafeteria at college! I especially was astounded by the cereal wall, after growing up in a home where my brother and I would pour sugar on our corn flakes to make them pseudo Frosted Flakes hahaha. I think I ate a bowl of lucky charms every day my freshmen year of college!
