Hodgepodge and Currently

1. What's something you may do this month?

I *may* read: I definitely will, jump up and down when my sub gig is over. It MAY end before the school year. I can't/ won't get too excited about the possibility. If it does end early, it will just be a few days before the school year ends, but I will still sing a joyful song in my heart if not out loud.

Whenever my last day at school is, I plan on getting a 56 ounce pop in my Big Gulp and not worry one bit about the caffeine consumption!

2. Hola! Hodgepodge Day lands just after Cinco de Mayo... how do you feel about Mexican food? What's your favorite dish? Do you make it at home or is it a strictly dine out option? 

Well, sure I like Mexican food!! At restaurants I tend to order chimichangas just because I don't make those at home. At home, I make tacos, enchiladas, burritos and nachos. 

3. When the children of today grow up what do you think they'll say about this time period? What do you most hope they remember? 

This time period will likely seem ancient to them. So they will likely say things like, can you believe when I was child, almost everyone drove their own cars rather than having self driven cars?

I hope they remember a time before people being so reliant on AI. 

I love that my childhood was pre-Internet. I know as my generation gets older and older, when the kids hear about someone being so old that the person remembers life pre-internet, they will be astonished and feel badly for us "oldie goldies." When I was a child, I remember my mom telling me that when my grandma was a girl, electricity in households was not common at all and my grandma did not have electricity in the house she grew up in. It was inconceivable to think about living without electricity. My generation's "item we lived without that the younger generations will think is incredulous" is the internet. And for a generation younger than mine, the next thing will likely be kids not seeing how that generation grew up without AI.

4. What advice would you give a new mother? 

Home school if at all possible your children. Most teachers' hearts are in the right place, I firmly believe that, but not all teachers care about students' education. If you're familiar with the phrase "quiet quitting" with regard to employment, I believe, based on my observations in a school setting that some teachers are quiet quitting in their role as school teachers. 

Even if every teacher were 100% on his or her A game every school day, though, I still think home schooling is best. I know it's not feasible for everyone, but I think it's best. A day at school consists of SO MUCH WASTED TIME. I see this and experience it daily! Students taught at home could learn the same amount as what they do in a school day in hours less if the education was tailored to the student and just his or her siblings at home.

It isn't just about the time but the content of what students learn in public school. No, sorry, I don't think human beings evolved from a single cell organism. I believe that God created the heavens and the earth. I believe He created mankind and animals and plants, etc. I don't believe that earth is approximately give or take a few billion years old. I've had to "reschool" my kids and tell them when I disagree with what they've learned at school. 

Socialization is easy to achieve if the family is active in church, Scouts, club sports, local theater, etc. 

I wish I'd subbed before I had kids! I think for sure if I had, I would have done everything in my power to home school my kids. 

5. What's a phrase your mother often said to you? If you're a mom do you say it to your own children? 

My mom was first generation German. She learned to speak German as she learned to speak English so she was fluent in both. (Her parents stopped speaking German in the home when school teachers told my mom's parents that my mom's siblings were mixing German and English words). My mom rarely spoke German around us but she did say a few phrases in German that I use with my kids.

One single word is "shnell." It's an adjective and adverb meaning, fast, quick, rapidly.  It's also used as a verb, "hurry up" (mach schnell) but my mom shortened it and just said, "schnell" when she wanted my siblings or I to hurry. 

My mom would ask, "Was ist los?" meaning what's the matter. I would say this to my children as well.

So many thoughts, so little time!! My random thought is that I'm also including the prompts from Currently:

Digging- into the dirt! Have seeds, dirt, and new gardening tools to boot (a birthday present). I've started planting the seeds and plants that go into the ground after the threat of frost is gone. For our area, that's generally considered Mother's Day. While of course it isn't past Mother's Day- that's coming up soon and the forecast until then shows no frost so I think we're ok. 

Weeding- I've had to do some weeding in my garden areas but not too much so far. I feel like I'm "in the weeds" at school but that too shall pass.

Enjoying- All of my birthday goodies!! I was spoiled with three different birthday cakes and tons of birthday sweets. Golly, I think my loved ones thought I needed "sweetening up." (Or they just know I love sugar!!)

Eating/drinking- Lots of sweet things! Also some good pizza

Shopping for- Nothing at the moment or in the immediate future. Once May 22nd hits, I will look into buying decorative items for the patio.
