Monthly Musings

Linking up with Holly and Patty for Monthly Musings

1. This really isn’t winter specific but I would say spending time with family and friends when possible. Spending time outdoors exercising unless the weather conditions are really bad. Trying to do something creative like scrapbooking. Reading a great book on a snowy day brings joy to me as well.

2. Turn on the fireplace. Relax on the couch with blankets.

... and in my comfiest PJ pants

3. I like the anticipation of snow days. This is the last year where any of my kids will be impacted by them so I am trying to really enjoy the threat of a delay or cancellation. We´ve only had a couple this year.

4. Watching a good movie or series with someone (I never watch TV or a movie on my own- if the the TV is on, I am with someone), running outside.

Cold weather running calls for layering. On the coldest days that I run, I will wear two layers on the top and bottom and make sure that my hands and ears are covered.

5. January- I like the fresh start, the cold and the short days. The short days don’t bother me because it’s temporary. It’s like a forced cozy for a month. I love it!!

And by the end of the month it’s nice to let go of those healthier eating habits that started January 1st when we celebrate Alyssa´s birthday :).

6. Soups of all kinds-

And some comfort food like homemade hash browns

7. We have a gas fireplace so I´m going to say gas. If I could choose which one, I don’t know which one I would chose. I like the ambiance of a real fire but real fires entail more effort. I do like flipping a switch to start the gas fireplace.

8. Hot tea- I drink herbal as well as green tea

9. I can’t think of any winter movies that I really like

10. I think that I’m pretty lucky in that I have a strong immune system. I never get the flu vaccine or any others that the CDC recommends. I have been feverish sick longer than 24 hours just one time in the past ten years.  I don’t mean to sound braggy about being lucky that I have a good immune system. You can be healthy as a horse one minute and diagnosed with a terminal illness and be gone within a year like my dad was and so smug about my health is the last way that I want to come across!

I feel like eating healhy(ish) most of the time combined with regular exercising is very beneficial to my health.

  1. Is that a lasagna soup? It looks delicious!

    1. Yes, Pamela! It was pretty good. But, big but, it just wasn´t nearly as good as real lasagna. Yet it had many lasagna ingredients in it. So it was like quasi lasagna but not as good? I probably won´t make it again. It really made me want to have real lasagna!

  2. These questions were heavy on the idea of winter. (I actually thought I had the wrong post...silly me). My brain has completely sifted in spring mode!! Winter is stuffed way back in the back of said little brain. Of course, I have fallen for this false sense of surviving winter before but I refuse to think it is possible. But soups are still most welcome around here!! And I have yet to try that tea...every time you show a picture, I want some. I should order it online. Glad you stopped by the blog earlier today. Made my day - thanks!:)

    1. I was happy to see a post from you! It does seem like spring is on everyone´s mind, including mine, but we do have, what, three weeks of winter?

  3. I'm so ready for spring! It was hard for me to answer the winter questions since we don't get a lot of "real" winter here. That lasagna soup looks delicious, as well as all of the cupcakes and goodies! I also don't get any vaccinations, and my kids get very few. We're fairly healthy! Eating healthier is something I really need to do.

    1. Thanks, Megan! I´ll bet your summers get super hot? We definitely get cold weather here but usually not much snow.

  4. Okay, now I want your homemade hashbrown recipe. Those look really good!

    1. Thanks, Natasha! The hashbrowns contain just two ingredients which is my kind of recipe... but, they do take some time. You grate your potatoes and then squeeze out as much moisture as you can (this helps them get crisp). I put them on a towel, sort of wrapped them up and squeezed the towel over the sink. (That will discolor your towel- I used a clean, old one for it.) Then heat a pan with a oil that just covers the surface of the pan and place potatoes in a single layer. Cook until golden brown. They were really good... but a bit of a process!!
