Hodgepodge

Linking up with Joyce for the Hodgepodge

1. It's officially fall y'all...in the northern hemisphere anyway. What are three of your favorite things about this particular season this year?

The changing colors of the leaves; the weather- cooler; the having less daylight hours- I am ready for daylight to become longer come spring. But I find myself looking forward to darker evenings earlier. I am ready for more daylight hours come spring. Maybe it's the change that I like as much as anything.

October 2022 at a park in Erie, PA- my sister and I met up in Erie for a weekend

Much closer to home last October- Alyssa went with me to a city park to scope out the best positions within the park for picture taking. A friend asked me to take her son's senior pictures. Alyssa was such a good sport in going to the park with me prior to the senior photo shoot.

And not just close to home but at home- every fall for a few lovely weeks, I get to see this every time that I walk down the stairs

2. Your favorite fall fabric- denim, flannel, tweed, corduroy, tartan, polar fleece, leather? Do you own something made with your favorite fall fabric?

My favorite fall fabric is probably corduroy. I like how it's never really out of style (I think- I am definitely not a fashionista so I could be wrong on that...) yet it reminds me somehow of the 1970's. (Was it more popular in the 70's or I have just made the association??  I am not looking for an answer per se, just documenting my (weird) ruminations!!)

I have just a couple pieces of corduroy.

3. According to Everyday Health, here are ten healthy fall foods- apples (flavonoids may improve brain health), pears (for heart friendly fiber), cranberries (helps your body fight oxidative stress) winter squash (for eye health), pumpkin (another great source of Vitamin A), leeks (an anti-inflammatory food), Brussel sprouts (full of fiber and anti-oxidants), sweet potatoes (loaded with Vid A and C), parsnips (keep your bones healthy with Vit K) and broccoli (may help prevent cancer).

How many on the list do you eat on a regular basis? Which one is your favorite? Which one gets a big no thanks from you?

I only eat pears and apples on a regular basis. I am currently reading a book that extols the benefits of eating many of the vegetables listed, exactly for the reasons listed above with each one. I really want to commit to eating more of these healthy foods more consistent.

Pears are my favorite between apples and pears.

A big no from me are leeks and Brussel sprouts. I have not had either very often so maybe I need to get some and experiment with different/better ways to consume them.

4. Tell us about the last time (or a recent time) you experienced a wave of nostalgia.

Oh goodness- a wave? More like tsunami. I would say I experienced it recently when putting together Alyssa´s slideshow for her grad party and then when we said good-bye to her at college.

5. Sept. 22 was National Daughter's Day. Like mother, like daughter... does this idiom ring true for you? You may answer in terms of your own role as a daughter or, if you have daughters, then your role as a mother of daughters.

Yes, for sure that idiom rings true. I feel like I have my mom’s personality. We were/are not super outgoing but had/have a few really good friends (just never the social butterfly). We were/are introspective. We were/are interested in politics. I was pretty young in 1980, but I remember my mom being super worried that Ronald Reagan wouldn’t win the presidency! He was predicted to win but my mom was worried that Republicans wouldn’t go to the polls and vote for him. We were/ are definitely not glass half full types of people. Nature and nurture likely played a role in my mom and me being a lot alike.😀

As for my girls, I see my personality in both of them in certain areas. Abby is probably the most like me personality wise. She also favors me in looks and that of my maternal grandmother.

6. Insert your own random thought here

Speaking of daughters, nostalgia and colors, I added another sticker to the back of my car to denote the college to which I handed over my last daughter. The Ohio State sticker fit well underneath the Miami sticker. I like how both schools have red as one of their main colors.

I have a Cincinnati mom sticker on the other side. Based on the condition of the sticker, it looks like I was Cincinnati mom back in the 1990's or something! I guess it's time to get rid of that sticker...I like how UC also has red in it as one of its main colors. Red, red, red for the three Rineer kids :).

  2. I loved reading your answers! That tree out your window is stunning. My sister Lisa has a tree similar to that in her yard in Parker, Colorado; hers is an Aspen, though, so it's bright yellow! I don't have trees in my front yard, and only one or two in the back, but I never notice the leaves on them. I sure do love seeing them on the ground, though! I hope you have a great day, my friend. ❤️

    1. Thanks, Dara! We do get some beautiful leaf colors in the fall. I hope our recent drought doesn´t impact the colors this year. I´ll bet there aren´t too many UMass Mom stickers on cars near you!!

  4. I love all those things fall too! I also think about childhood when I wear corduroy. I have a pair of pants I bought last year that is one of my favorites. I have stickers on the back of my car too with my daughters colleges represented.

  6. I do love all the fall colors but I hate that it gets darker earlier (though I am loving sleep just a bit later in the morning since it's nice and dark now). I have tried cooking brussel sprouts so many ways but I still just do not like them. I do eat all the other fruits and veggies on the list though.

  7. That tree!! So beautiful! My backyard in NJ was a literal forest and it exploded into a sea of bright gold every autumn. I miss that. We have loads of pines so don't get as much color here as we did when we lived in the northeast, but we're really close to the mountains so often drive into the nearby towns to leaf peep. I have always loved all fruits, and most veggies. Potato leek soup is good and if you like potatoes might be an easy way to try leeks.

    1. Oh, I bet the mountains are gorgeous in the fall. You will have to get some pics for those of us who live in more plain terrain :). We can admire from afar...I need to eat more veggies- been feeling little nudges towards that recently.

    1. Thanks, Lisa! I like how the colors of the stickers match! Alyssa was thinking about going to a college whose colors were a unique shade of green. Red is much better, lol.

    1. Thank you, Kym! I hope we have good fall colors this year. The drought will likely have damaged the leaves.
