Monthly Musings

Linking up with Holly and Patty for Monthly Musings

1. Favorite thing about spring- too hard to narrow it down to one favorite 😀! I love celebrating Easter, my birthday is in April (as well as many friends and family members), our anniversary is in May, the school year ends in spring ushering in freedom from school work for the kids- so much good stuff...

Easter last year (had surgery this year on Easter so no pics!)

My BIG birthday last year in the spring

Speaking of big, our upcoming anniversary is going to be a BIG one!

Picture below is from a disposable camera (which explains the poor quality 😆)- remember when people included disposable cameras on tables at wedding receptions and  encouraged guests to take pictures? Those were the days and it’s safe to say the disposable camera industry took a big, if not fatal, hit when cell phone cameras spit out decent quality photos…

2. Spring traditions include celebrating Easter/ birthdays/ our anniversary. We are not a family that went away for every spring break when all three kids were in school- Donnie’s busy practice rendered that impossible. But we went away several of the years when all of the kids had the same spring break. And, the past four years, Alyssa and I have gone to Florida for her spring break.

3. Favorite spring outfits- I don’t have one particular outfit but I have a few pairs of capri jeans that I enjoy getting out to wear each spring when the weather turns warmer. I bought three items from Talbots that I thought would be spring favorites this year- a cropped linen jacket and two pairs of trouser jeans. BUT,  I ordered them and they arrived the day that I injured my Achilles tendon and I have had a cast on my leg almost ever day since, have been practically a shut in and have not so much as tried these items on- maybe next year they will be favorites, 🤷‍♀️

Since I am not in the habit of taking pictures of myself in outfits, I didn’t think that I would be able to show a a picture of me in capris. But then I remembered that I had these photos from a fun/silly photoshoot we did last April when my sister came to town for my birthday.

Last April with my siser

Linen cropped blazer

Jeans from Talbot’s- I won’t be able to wear jeans for the next three months- just in time for hot summer days...

4. Favorite spring time meal- There’s no one favorite but I know that in the weeks leading up to Easter, seafood tends to go on sale at the grocery store (to accommodate those who don’t eat meat on Fridays leading up to Easter) and I buy it more due to it being on sale. We definitely eat more seafood in the spring and shrimp scampi is one of my favorite meals.

5. Spring rain- love or loathe. Love, love, love if I don’t have outdoor plans. I love being inside when the weather is cruddy outside! I used to love to run outside in the rain. (I wouldn't run in a storm but merely rain never daunted or stopped me!). I also love to see the verdant, lush grass that those spring showers make possible. (And lush grass will be a thing of the past in the summer unless one is willing to water the lawn.) Now, if I have plans outside that don’t include running, I don’t want it to rain.

6. Favorite spring flower- I don’t have a favorite. If it’s a' blooming, I’ma liking it!

I do love roses and in particular my bridal bouquet. I love how my bouquet had multi colored roses while the bridesmaids had light pink ones in their bouquets.

With my mom...

... and my beautiful bridesmaids with their beautiful pink roses

and me with my best guy in a pretty park with lots of flowers (oh, and my allergies were terrible on our wedding day because, spring in Dayton, Ohio).

7. Do you get seasonal allergies? I think I answered that....We are in a part of the country that is known for its inhabitants who suffer terribly from allergies. I did not grow up in such a place! The first year spring that I was in southwest Ohio was the first year that I was in law school at UD. One spring day, after coming inside from an outdoor run, I sneezed about eight times in close succession. I remember thinking that the “cold” I  must have caught had come upon me suddenly. Why, I had no symptoms of this cold prior to my run. I would soon make a correlation between my “cold” symptoms and spending time outdoors. I don’t know how long it took me to make the correlation between living in an allergy hotspot and me having, you know, allergies. But, one day I did realize it! My allergy symptoms have actually abated quite a bit in the last few years, thankfully.

I tried just about everything to alleviate allergy symptoms when I suffered from them. For me, Flonase worked pretty well.

8. Favorite springtime beverage- I don’t have a favorite. I drink what I drink pretty much year round.

9. Change home decor for spring? I decorate for Easter but after Easter I take those decorations down.

10. Lemon meringue pie or strawberry shortcake- my mom made a mean lemon meringue pie and I liked it. As with any lemon dessert, I certainly enjoy eating it and will happily eat it if someone presents it to me. But I would never go out of my way to make a lemon dessert or choose one if presented with other options. So, I’m going to go with strawberry shortcake!

  1. I loved reading your answers and seeing your wedding pictures! I don't know that I've seen them before, but I love the dresses your bridesmaids wore and the picture of you and Donnie at the park. My bridesmaids dresses were also black and white! We all had white/off-white flowers in our bouquets. We also had those disposable cameras on every table, and you are right about them not being around much now. I loved the idea of everyone taking pictures, though. Our wedding photos were mostly lost, so all I had were the ones that people took.

    1. Thank you, Jennifer! I think I have only shown a couple of wedding pics before on the blog- I had my wedding album out this week and thought that some of them would go great with my flower answer. I had truly never seen a bouquet I liked better than my bridal bouquet! That is cool that your bridesmaids were in black and white as well. It´s definitely not done as often as dresses with colors but I loved the dresses (and hope the bridesmaids did as well!). You LOST your wedding pictures? Oh no! Thank goodness for the pictures that your guests took.

  2. We had disposable cameras on our wedding tables too (and I got some pretty great pictures from them!). I never knew I had seasonal allergies either until one year I thought I had a sinus infection but needed to fly to Florida and within hours of landing everything cleared up and I felt fabulous. Then a week later after arriving home I felt awful again and called my doctor; explaining what had happened she told me she didn't even need to see me and that I now had seasonal allergies so she'd call in a prescription for me. It has taken me years to remember to that when I start sneezing and my eyes start watering that it's allergies and not a spring cold.

    1. How interesting about your reaction in Florida- I had a good friend and her family move from Ohio to Florida because my friend could not get relief from allergies/ sinus infections that she had here constantly. She noticed that when she was in Florida, she breathed so much better and it improved her mood so much that they decided to move there! (My friend and her husband are both nurses so they could get jobs anywhere. They also loved the warmth, proximity to beaches, etc. that being in Florida got them.) I am glad you were able to get on a prescription for your allergies. I am glad that I was not the only one to confuse a cold with allergies (it probably happens quite a bit!).

  3. I remember seeing a bride's DIY reel just a couple days ago and she'd made personalized labels for the disposable cameras so maybe it's still a thing? Certainly not as common as a few years ago though! Love your wedding photos, and the photos of you with your sister. My seasonal allergies have changed in intensity depending on where I lived - and how long I'd lived there. Thankfully I haven't had much issue here in Ohio, but I don't live in the country any more either so perhaps not as much exposure to pollens. Hope you're having a great week and enjoying spring weather!

  4. What a blast from the past...disposable cameras on the tables. Yes, I remember that clearly! I love all your wedding pictures! I also enjoy wearing capri jeans in the spring and summer. I wear shorts around the house or to run errands, but if I'm going out to eat or anything like that, I wear the capri jeans. I loved hearing about your springtime faves!

    1. Thank you, Tanya! I wonder what percentage of traditional wedding receptions in the 1990´s to early 2000´s had disposable cameras? My guess is that the percentage is high...I will be in shorts for the next several months due to my injury but the second I can take my boot off (not for at least two months :(), I will be hitting the town in capris!

  5. Oh, wow, Kym, that is interesting about a bride using disposable cameras in this day and age! (I don´t understand that or making personalized labels for them honestly, but to each bride, her own!!) I could see nowadays, bridal couples providing a link to go to to upload photos that guests take with their cell phones or something like that. I didn´t think about where you live within a locale impacting allergies but it likely does. We are having lovely weather right now (I feel like I ¨hated¨ on my state with the allergy talk so now I need to compliment it, lol). I hope your weather and week are great as well!

    1. Thanks, Marilyn! I thought that the jeans were lighter in color so I thought they would be perfect for spring. They are actually more medium to dark so hopefully they will be nice for fall!
