Gone...but not forgotten
Ok, that post title sounds a bit morbid. No one has died recently. I'm referring to the fact that the kids are gone almost all day during the week. But how could I forget them? Obviously, I can't! Also, the fact that when I walk into the house from the garage, this is the sight that greets me:
Jacob's basketball bag, three soccer bags (not sure why there are three when only two play soccer?), lacrosse sticks, and Abby's dance bag. The sign that says Live, Laugh, Love should say Drive, Drive More, and Keep Driving! The kids do keep us busy after school and on the weekends with their activities. Sometimes it seems a bit much but I am grateful beyond words that they have bodies capable of moving, minds and mouths capable ofsinging their parents' praise , learning, cheering and complaining, and we have resources that allow them to be so active. Here's what we've been up to:
Jacob- He gets on the bus every morning at 6:50. He arrives home close to 3:00. Jacob is not crazy about 6th grade but he's never been crazy about school. He is playing indoor soccer and basketball. He has his first basketball game this weekend. He had his first indoor soccer game last weekend. About a month ago, a new family moved in next door. They have a 14 year old son named Malcolm. Jacob and Malcolm hit it off right away. They've spent a lot of time together on the trampoline, shooting hoops, and playing video games. They hang out with Calvin and a kid named Steven, too. So thankful that Malcolm's military family found its way from Japan to our next door! The kids had last Friday off school for parent conferences. The day was fairly warm. I don't think Jacob was inside for more than 15 minutes from about 9:30 to 5:30. Jacob has many friends (including tons of girls as friends, what's up with that?). He is sweet kid who's entering uncharted territory for him. I hope he remembers all his Bible verses and lessons that he's heard from church and his mama as he faces temptations and what not.
Abby- She gets on the bus or is picked up by Kristen by 8:30. She returns home around 4:00. She is not crazy about school. But, she does well. Her teacher wrote the following note about her, "Abby is a sweet girl who works hard." Awwww! At her conference, her teacher said that Abby was a leader and that the teacher leaves her in charge of groups. Abby is doing dance and gymnastics. Regarding the former, she is doing her weekly technique with the older, more advanced girls in the studio. Her dance teacher thought that would challenge her more. In gymnastics, she's doing really well and loves to do tumbling. She and Alyssa use Donnie's weight equipment in the basement as "bars" on which to flip around. She also creates small bars and beams for her American Girl dolls. Her creativity has few boundaries. She's always creating, drawing, sewing or thinking up some project.
Alyssa- She is my one child who actually likes school :-). She loves her teacher, Mrs. Fluty. Mrs. Fluty is an awesome teacher! Alyssa's reading skills have taken off this year and she loves to read. Alyssa started her winter training through Cincinnati United last Sunday. She's been with CU for two years now, but this is the first time she's done their winter training. She will be playing 1st grade basketball for Springboro. Can't wait to see her in a basketball uni! In gymnastics, she has mastered her back handspring and will be moving up to the Intermediate Tumbling class. She had a substitute teacher on Tuesday who commented on her flexibility and strength. In two months she will be seven- hard to believe. She has not lost a tooth yet but I think one in front may be loose. One thing's for sure, girlfriend will not be wanting her front tooth for Christmas if she looses a tooth-all she wants are American Girl doll items!
Mama- The days go by so quickly! I've been trying to get some projects done and have succeeded modestly. I've organized some areas of the kitchen but still have a long way to go. The house is easier to keep clean with the kids gone but it's not nearly as clean as I would like it to be. I probablywaste spend too much time online. With the recent election, I became a news junkie. I've enjoyed working with my pictures and doing photo books. Working with my pictures is definitely something that I enjoy and I can sort of justify as a household activity (I'm preserving memories here!).
Donald- Donnie works every day during the week, day in and day out. How fortunate we are that he's willing to work so hard and that he has plenty of work to do. I don't know how he does it. He's been with the same firm since graduating from law school clear back in 1999. He's also one of the assistant coaches on Jacob's basketball team. That means he goes straight from work to Five Points Elementary school on Monday and on Wednesday comes home just in time to get some dinner and then head to Five Points.
