Frequent grocery store buys
A couple of my favorite bloggers have a link up where the topic for this month is frequent grocery store buys. I originally thought that I didn't have any or many anyway thoughts on the subject. But then I had to make a grocery list and I realized that I do have thoughts and I may as well share them here. This is sort of a "slice of life" post because I know what I typically purchase has changed over the years. These are a few of my current frequent grocery store purchases/items I keep in my pantry.
Fruit: I almost always keep strawberries and grapes in the refrigerator. Besides those two items, I rotate through a few fruits based on what sounds good when I'm at the store. I frequently buy apples, tangerines, and blueberries but you wouldn't always find them in my shopping cart/at our house.
Vegetables: I always have onions in the pantry and usually potatoes. The latter are decent for last minute side dishes to meals: mash 'em, cut and air fry 'em, bake 'em, etc. Can't go wrong with a tater unless you're trying to watch carbs. In the fridge, I always have carrots. These are the best for a last minute side... Peel 'em, cut them and place on a plate. Not very sophisticated but we don't care too much about that around here! Lastly, some sort of green for a salad is almost always in the fridge. Jacob is liking garden salads right now so I've been buying those mixes. I will start buying the spring mix here pretty soon as Donnie and I prefer those kinds of green for salads that we have with grilled steak.
In the freezer I like to keep cut carrot/pea packages. I use those packages for veggies in chicken pot pie when I make that and I use them in chicken/shrimp fried rice.
In the pantry, I like to keep stocked black beans and all variety of soup beans. I also keep canned corn and beans in the pantry.
I buy a variety of other veggies for a specific meal. For instance, I don't purchase red peppers unless I'm making something that specially calls for them.
Dairy: The boys like sour cream (bleh!) with a few dishes that I make so I always have it for them. I like cream cheese on bagels so that's a must have for me. And of course cheese! I usually always pick up a block or two of cheese when I go to the store even if we're not low. It's like a reflex for me. Store=cheese. I don't fight it, I just buy it!! I decided to see what's in my cheese drawer at the moment. I haven't been to the store in over a week and in fact, I wondered if my cheese supply was low due to me not purchasing any in at least a week. Glad to report the answer is No! 😀
Protein: Eggs- lots of eggs. So many uses for eggs and when the number of eggs dips below six or seven, I know I will be picking up a dozen soon! I use them for baking, for hard boiling for salads, for pan frying with cheese for a quick lunch- for so many things. We go through a lot of eggs! I keep chicken breast and ground beef in the refrigerator/freezer almost all of the time. I keep deli meat- usually just turkey breast in the fridge. We also usually have a variety of protein bars in the pantry. I get large variety packs from Sam's Club.
This is one kind that I always have stocked at home. We usually have other varieties/brands as well.
Carbs- bread/snacks: I almost always have bagels as I made breakfast type sandwiches for lunch when I'm at home and the weekends for Donnie. Bread is more iffy- we probably have it in the house 50 percent of the time. As for snacks, Donnie usually buys whatever snacks sound good to him at the moment. He cycles in and out of favorites. I'm not a big snacker- sometimes I pilfer some of his snacks if we're watching TV together and he brings out snacks. At the store, I rarely buy snacks for me. I do keep popcorn kernels in the pantry (and we have specialty popcorn packets for the popcorn maker) as well as oil in case Alyssa (when she's home) and/or Jacob request stove popped popcorn.
I'm not including a lot of pantry and refrigerator staples which buy as needed such as flour, sugar, rice, nuts, pasta, etc. When Abby was in high school in one of her upper level honors French classes, one of the assignments was to make a dish at home with a partner from class and video record it. While making/filming, the students were supposed to be giving instructions exclusively in French. Abby's partner came to our house where the two of them made their dishes. Abby said when her partner saw our pantry, he told her that he knew where he was going to come in the event of an apocalypse! I don't think our pantry is apocalypse ready but it is full of items 😉
I'm sure I'm missing many things regarding what I typically buy. These were just a few thoughts that I quickly transferred from my mind to pixels. When Alyssa is home this summer, the items that I purchase will greatly increase. Speaking of purchasing, I don't like grocery shopping but love how close we live to several grocery stores. It's comforting to know that an egg/cheese/bread purchase is a five or six minute drive from our kitchen to several grocery stores.
Linking up with Dara and the gals at Share Our Lives and Joanne for Talking About it Tuesday.

Good morning! I’ve been around, but just reading bits here and there as I find time to pick up my iPad. This was a very interesting post to read – doesn’t everybody want to know if they live like other people? Ha! I cannot believe how much our grocery store game has changed in the last five years…I have gone from going to the grocery store 2-3 times a week to going not even 2-3 times a month. Of everything you wrote about, eggs are probably our most frequently purchased item and we purchased them by the dozens…when you said “a dozen eggs“ I laughed. We really do eat a lot of eggs. Bread is the other interesting thing that has changed over the years… We’ve gone from consuming five loaves of bread a week to… I can’t even remember the last time I purchased bread. Of course, diets have changed over the years so that makes a difference, but I kind of miss the days of feeding a family of sex.
ReplyDeleteHa! I should proofread before publishing!!! A family of SIX!!!!
DeleteLOL! Word association with the word "family" :). It is interesting to read what other people buy/consume. What are you making with all your eggs? Do you belong to Sam's Club or Costco? Our Sam's Club sells eggs by 5 dozen count. That is probably a bit too much for us so I just buy a dozen eggs at a time- though it seems I buy a dozen pretty frequently. Our buying (and eating) patterns have shifted naturally with fewer people in the house.
DeleteSuch a healthy and great variety- love the way you keep it real and LOVE your cheese bin :)
ReplyDeleteThanks, Holly! I've been to the store since I wrote this (I was planning on publishing this Tuesday but it didn't work out) and my cheese drawer is even more full :).
DeleteI always love seeing what people buy. I do a lot of those same things you do! I always have stuff for easy lunches at work, quick dinners at home, and things in the freezer that can be eaten for dinner on the nights I don't want to cook. I need to be better at the pantry...this is where I've fallen off.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Jenn! It is so interesting to see what others purchase and eat! I'm sure your pantry and eating habits have changed with your newer lifestyle change.
DeleteThis makes me want to visit Aldi (as I have a Kroger pick up order going on my phone app). I do think they do cheese well! The sliced cheese price is really good. We almost always have Havarti because we think that works on a grilled cheese pretty well. We always have a full cheese/meat drawer, too. Since I am just learning how to shop for two, it's all new to me! I am the same about eggs. I don't like to dip below 6 or 7.
ReplyDeleteI like to read about what people buy!
It's so interesting to see what people buy! Yes, to Havarti- that is one of the sliced cheese containers in my cheese drawer right now. I pretty much only shop at Aldi now that our town has one and Walmart. There was a problem with my Kroger card that NO ONE has been able to figure out. Jacob has since loaded his card on my phone and he claims that will work (J worked at Kroger during the pandemic) but I have not tried it. I miss Kroger's sales but I have gotten very used to Aldi's no fuss, no frills style and it's working for me. I know you are a Kroger gal as you have one near you. Bottom line is you gotta shop at wherever makes the most sense for you...
DeleteYou seem to have similar type foods on your list as I do.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed reading your list- thanks for the link up :).
DeleteOur cheese and dairy consumption have dropped dramatically since 3 of us have realized that our bodies don't like it (none of us have stopped it entirely but we joke that we save our dairy for the good stuff like cheesecake and ice cream!). My husband helped me write up Monday's post and remarked that we'd be saving so much on groceries once the boys moved out and I reminded him that he eats the bulk of all the fruits, veggies, and eggs so it probably wouldn't be that dramatically different! Though there are foods I only have to buy when Alec is home that I don't buy when he's away at school.
ReplyDeleteIf dairy doesn't agree with you, then yes, you must be judicious with how you consume dairy. I'd be saving dairy for cheesecake and ice cream, too! I noticed a pretty decent size change in our grocery bill after Alyssa started college. I buy many "Alyssa" specific foods/snacks plus once she left, sometimes our meals were more us just grazing/snacking rather than an actual meal so we saved money there, too.
DeleteIt's so interesting to see what people buy! I do a weekly shop, usually with a list (although I don't always stick to it!) for our staple items but I'm always running to the local store at least two or three times a week for something extra.
ReplyDeleteI feel like I do, that too, Pamela (run to a local store a couple of times a week).
DeleteI am really looking forward to strawberry season as I bought some last week, they were tiny and didn't taste great. We go through so many potatoes here too! It's the same with the cheese here, I don't think my family could live without a constant supply. That little story about Abby and her French assignment. I always say I would go to my dad's as he always has so much food considering he lives alone.
ReplyDeleteYou have your apocalypse house to go to :).It will be so nice when strawberries are in season! I hope your season is soon...
DeleteI had just taken pictures of my grocery load yesterday before reading your post! I feel like we could easily stay at one another's house because so much of this is similar to me. I love that store = cheese! The only thing I don't keep are cans of beans in my pantry. Have a good day and happy cooking this weekend!
DeleteThank you, Marilyn! I forgot you don't like beans!!
DeleteI so wish I could say bagels were always in my pantry. I LOVE bagels. But that would not be good for me. I have to reserve them as a treat:) Cheese, on the other hand, is always in our fridge. And in abundance! As are eggs:)
