DiTL- two ways
I'm writing about two different days for an abbreviated day(s) in the life. These days were both week days. One of the days I subbed and one of the days I didn't work. It goes without saying that a day at work is going to look quite a bit different than a day at home. I know I will be interested to know what two days in the life looked like in this season of my life.
Non sub week day: Donnie and I refer to days that I don't work as days where I'm a "trad wife." This was a trad wife day.
The day was a Thursday late in October. I'd worked the previous three days, though one was half a day. It's always a good feeling the evening before a day of no work and I'm sure I felt appreciative on Wednesday night.
I woke up to the sound of Donnie's alarm. On days that I sub, I wake up earlier than Donnie does. But on days that I don't work, I sometimes wake up early before I hear Donnie's alarm clock. If I'm lucky, I sleep in until his goes off.
First thing in the morning (this applies to every morning where I'm trad wifing it) I read my three B's. I read blog posts, the book (if any) I'm currently reading and my Bible. Some of this is split in between Donnie leaving for work. When Donnie gets out of the shower, I put aside anything I'm reading to go back to our bedroom and chat with him while he's getting ready for work. When he's ready for work, I accompany him to the kitchen where I make sure his lunch is assembled and ready to go (he pretty much has to bring a lunch to work; there are few restaurants nearby and he doesn't care for the ones that are). He almost always makes a coffee to go and then I see him off to work.
When Donnie left, I read for a short while and then got to work doing some tasks around the house and tidied up before I left. The day was a rainy, really cool one and it would have been nice to have not gone anywhere. But Donnie had asked me to get some items from Sam's Club so I went out and did that. I got some items for us as well- my dinner plan was nebulous so I picked up a rotisserie chicken. I know I can always come up with a dinner plan if I have some cooked chicken on hand.
It was one of our first, really cool and icky days of the season.
From Sam's I brought home an $.89 pop and a $4.98 chicken. (Gotta love Sam's- I mean you're paying to pay less but those cheap prices still feel good)
I came home and had a typical lunch of a bagel and egg sandwich and some fruit. I made some cookie dough for cookies that I planned to bake the next day.
Then I left the house for one final time to visit a family member who was in the hospital. The hospital wasn't too far away and I didn't stay long so I was home within plenty of time to make dinner.
Once home, I shredded the chicken and decided to make chicken tortilla soup. I used this recipe and it turned out good! Will make it again (I didn't want a super rich, cream based soup so this was perfect).
Donnie came home and we ate dinner. After dinner we relaxed for a short while, talking about the news and our day. Donnie went to the gym and I ran after our food had digested a little. Then it was time for a shower and not long after that, it was bedtime.
Day in the life of a day that I subbed:
This day is today, Wednesday!
I woke up to the sound of the alarm. My alarm goes off super early the days that I sub, but as soon as I'm awake, I'm awake. No snooze button for me...
I did my reading but it was abbreviated due to having less time to read since I had somewhere that I needed to be. I chatted very briefly with Donnie before I left and was out of the house by the time it was starting to become light.
School was kind of a whirlwind, but it was good. I was a floating sub and even got a break besides my lunch break so no complaints.
School fit- Wednesdays are jeans and spirit shirt day at school (as are Fridays)

Straight from the school I was at, I went to the school where I will be doing my long term sub job. The schools are about a mile apart so it was a short drive. I met with the teacher for whom I'll be subbing. It's the second time we've met and I'm not too terrified... just slightly. No, it's all good. Or it will be. Or something like that.
Came home and had things to do at home like cleaning out the refrigerator (trash day is Thursday so I try to clean out the refrigerator on Wednesdays) and general tidying up. Soon it was time to make dinner. I made chicken Parmesan... without the Parm!
It turned out good and I may write about it if I get a chance to write a Friday post. I worked on his post as well and then ran and relaxed after dinner.

You are so productive- I love it! Your sub days sound tiring but so fun- can't wait to read all about your long term sub job- they are so lucky to have you. Your meals look so healthy and delish too!

DeleteIt's fun to see how people spend their days. My tortilla soup isn't cream based either and I prefer it this way. How long is the long term sub job? Maybe you'll love it, and I know the teacher appreciates having things in order before being out for a while. Is it a single subject? Enjoy your day!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Joyce! One of the odd things about the job is that it's for an indeterminate amount of time based on how long the teacher needs to be gone. I think not knowing how long it's going to last is stressing me out the most. I said that I could sub for as long as the duration could go (on the long end) but ideally it won't last as long as it could. It's for math mostly.

I ask Tom almost every day if there is "something I can do to make his life easier" and sometimes I regret asking - lol. He isn't great about planning ahead and I don't like to be at the store too much.
I feel the same way about helping Donnie- I'll run whatever errands he needs me to run. Thankfully, it's usually Sam's Club runs which I've made my peace with! The duration of the job is undetermined. I hate not knowing exactly how long it's going to be :(.

DeleteCombining two totally different days of your life was interesting. It is so fun to see how other women spend their days. The tortilla soup sounds delicious. My son and family live in Northern Indiana, in Granger, so I can identify a bit with the weather you were experiencing. We were still in the upper 80s when they were in the 30s.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Libby! The upper 80's! WOW! One of my brothers lives in northern IN near Ft. Wayne. Another brother is in northern Ohio near Toledo and they didn't get as much snow as we got! It's really interesting to see how others spend their day(s)!

Those rotisserie chickens are such a great deal and make last minute meals a breeze. Hope this new day is a good one for you and that your long term subbing job is good!

DeleteBoth days sound great! I hope the long term sub job goes well. I often ended up preferring them to the day to day subbing because you really get to know the kids that way.
ReplyDeleteThat is definitely true! I liked getting to know (some of) the kids from my last long term sub job. I was thinking it was three years ago but just saw on my school's email account that it was four years ago.

Thank you, Kim! The family member is doing better, thank goodness. I'm so, so, nosy- I mean curious, about other people's days! Pop was a pretty good reward for having to go out!

We've been there a few times on the weekends when they've run out of chicken and people will literally line up near the place where they put them out in order to get one when a new batch is done. I've not gone to those extremes but it's hard to pass one up when I walk by them in the store!

ReplyDeleteSo one thing I am noticing by reading these DITL‘s is that so many two person households are still making dinner every night. I made a pot of soup yesterday but the two others who live in my house are GF and I wanted tortellini in it so I gave half of it away to my in-laws and I will be eating it the rest of the week :/ I never think our lifestyle is “different” until I read these… nothing good/bad about that comment, just different.
I think I like my days as a trad wife as much as I like my days in a career. Yes, I am lucky to experience both - as you are!

They've changed the name- it isn't Sycamore anymore! (My phone still recognizes it as Sycamore when I type it in but officially the name has changed.) The network is huge and has gone through some big changes the past few years. That's interesting about what you noticed about dinners. When we first became empty nesters, we enjoyed "winging it" a few nights and not having a made meal- just snacks and picking out items from the pantry and fridge that looked good. Now that Jacob is in the house, we've not done that. I make actual meals most week nights. That's crazy (but nice!) that you gave away half the soup. I'd have been treasuring that and making my family eat it, lol (no one has dietary restrictions here). Agree about being lucky to have gotten to experience both a career/job and having days of being a trad wife. Thanks for taking the time to comment :)

ReplyDeleteThanks, Jennifer! I definitely prefer days at home if doing a day by day comparison. Yet, when I think about it, I'm glad that I do have this part time gig (and getting to choose what days I work). I've met some really great people (staff) at the schools where I work as well as have many great interactions with the students over the years (ie, helping them learn something). So there have been and are many positives to subbing. But day by day if I had to choose my favorite, it would be staying in my cozy home :).

I miss my "trad wife" days, to be honest, and I think it would be great to have a job situation where I could mix and match my days a little bit. I'm sure you will be well-prepared for that long term sub job and will do great! Really enjoyed this glimpse into your everyday world.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Kym! I l have enjoyed reading others'- there's something about a sneak peak into others' daily habits and routines. I enjoy the flexibility so much of being a sub. Of course a long term assignment takes away from that but the long term jobs are not common for me.
