It was a week that was the calm before the storm, using the term "storm" loosely. It was the last week of just the three of us at home as Jacob and Abby would be coming home soon for winter break. That's not a bad thing and not a storm, either, for that matter, but it will change the tenor of the home as extra bodies have a way of doing. 

I subbed four days this week. The work days were OK. One girl became very disrespectful to me when I called out her friend for not doing her art work (I was the art teacher) and instead being on her computer. The girl claimed that her friend could be on the site she was on and was indignant with me on her friend's behalf. It was an odd situation because of how angry this girl was at me, like not at all normal, especially considering I did not do anything that should have engendered such a response. I told a teacher about it later and she said that it was not surprising to hear given what the teacher knows about the student.  It was disheartening, truly, to think that a student being raised in our nice little suburb is being raised to have such blatant disrespect for adults. At least it's not the norm?? Anyway, one of the days that I worked was our district's once a month one hour early release and that was NICE!! Subs get paid the same amount on the early release days as one regular days so so we are getting a little something for nothing ;).  I met a sub friend and her friend after the school day ended for a late lunch at a Mexican restaurant. I didn't take any pictures but the food and company were both good! It's nice to commiserate with those who are in similar situations. I did take a picture of this and sent it to my sub friend:

Fog caused delays to some school districts this week. We did not get so lucky...

I normally don't have Ritz crackers on hand but Alyssa and I had picked some up the last time we were at the store so I decided to try Ritz poppy seed chicken casserole. I didn't add the entire stick of butter (I used half) nor did I use all of the sour cream that it called for; it seemed like it would be rich enough without the full amounts. The dish turned out a bit disappointing given that it wasn't exactly healthy- maybe it needs the full fat to be really good?

Wednesday at middle school youth group at church, the students participated in putting some baskets of food together for families in need in the area. The kids dove into the task (almost literally- as soon as Nathan, the youth group leader, gave instructions and let students come up to the tables to start filling the baskets, the kids practically ran to get a spot at the table. Their enthusiasm was fun to witness.).

One of the girls in my small group had the cutest phone case. The glitter was in some sort of liquid and it moved every time the phone case moved. Cutest phone case for a middle schooler ;)

A few weeks ago, Holly posted some cute red plaid dress shoes. I was interested in getting them so I went to the website, Talbots, to order them. The site showed some plaid mules which sounded preferable to kitten heels for my feet. However, they were out of stock. I decided to come back to the site later to see if they got more in. They did not and the plaid kitten heels were completely sold out. So I found these shoes that obviously aren't plaid but I liked them and tried to console myself that they were better than the plaid ones because I would be able to wear them for more occasions than the Christmas season. They only had MY size left so I took that as another sign that these were meant to be. Unfortunately, they were actually sold out.  I could not order them. Sigh.

I found a pair of tartan plaid shoes on Posh Mark and ordered them.  Used shoes are kinda gross but I really wanted plaid and could not find any new ones. They came in the mail two days after I ordered them.

I like how they look but they are C-R-A-Z-Y UNCOMFORTABLE. I can't win for losing!!

Not only did Abby have finals this week, the campus news station decided that this week would be a great one to air the news cast LIVE for the first time ever. So, just a little pressure! Abby was selected to be one of the anchors. I got to watch the live cast of it. There were a couple of tiny iffy moments but overall it went really well. 

I picked up Abby from school on Friday for winter break 😀.  It was good to see her again and hear about finals and what she's been up to. We got stopped by a train on the way home. I call these photos, "Scenes from a dismal day in an ag/ industrial area of Ohio."

Looking forward to the weekend- no mouthy kids*  and no trains!!

*if my own kids are mouthy, I will be able to appropriately and effectively discipline the mouthy malfeasant. I can't exactly do that with a child who is not my own...
