Christmas in Springboro
Christmas in Springboro- our town's annual homage to the Most Wonderful Time of the Year occurred over the weekend. Always the weekend before Thanksgiving, the festival virtually guarantees that our town is one place where no one will side eye neighbors for having Christmas decorations up before Thanksgiving- goodness, the town has its Christmas lights/ decorations up before Thanksgiving.
Jacob texted me on Friday to say that he was coming home Friday evening to go to the festival. One of his friends was giving him a ride home on Friday and would take him back on Saturday. So we got to see Jacob for a short time on Friday and Saturday morning before he left again for school. His girlfriend came over Friday evening and they went to the festival together. The girls and Donnie and I were going to go... and then we didn't. The girls were going to meet friends/ boyfriends at the festival but in the end, a combination of the timing not working out, it was really cold out, Donnie's sinuses were bothering him so the four of us stayed in Friday night.
Saturday, Abby would be part of the parade. Her dance studio had a float and a few of the girls were going to pass out rolls of candy that Abby and her friend Hanna had put together. Abby had to be dropped off at the parade site an hour early. Alyssa and I dropped her off and then we walked back to the main part of the festival. We walked around, got some food and then secured a spot along the parade route. We were worried about rain on the parade, literally. There was a 100% chance of rain for the afternoon. The parade was supposed to start at noon but festival organizers moved the start time up to avoid the rain which radar showed was imminent.
A most unfortunate event occurred during the parade. Abby's foot got run over by one of the wheels on the trailer that housed her dance studio's float. A lot transpired in the hour following the run over but the bottom line is that x-rays showed nothing was broken. We were very grateful for that! Knowing how devastating the results can be when bodies and moving vehicles collide, we know we are fortunate that she emerged with a bruised and sore foot and nothing worse.
Instead of spending the afternoon at the festival, which would have been a wet and cold experience, we spent it together in the family room. Rain fell hard against the windows while we relaxed with a fire in the fireplace. Abby dozed on and off on the couch, Alyssa and I played board games, and Donnie worked on figuring out some of our technological/ cell phone issues. Abby and I fielded a lot of questions/ concerns from her dance friends about her condition via text, too, during the afternoon.
While the afternoon was a cozy one thanks to staying inside due to Abby's injury, the injury impacted our evening plans in a not so nice way. In the evening, Abby and I had planned to drive down to Northern Kentucky University (NKU) to see Arianna perform in NKU's musical theater performance of Freaky Friday. I had purchased the tickets for the show; we were excited to see Arianna and Arianna's mom Kim told me that Arianna was excited for us to come because it was the one night of the show that no one from Arianna's family could come and see it. Alas, Abby's foot hurt too much for us to venture out so we spent the evening in.
Donnie and Alyssa had their own plans for the evening and because neither their feet had been run over nor had any other mishap befallen them, they were able to keep their plans. Earlier in the week, one of Donnie's clients asked if he'd like two tickets to see the UC football game on Saturday evening. Knowing that Abby and I had plans and that Alyssa enjoys watching games, Donnie said that, yes, he'd like the tickets. When the client brought the tickets to him, he realized they were no ordinary tickets. The tickets included a parking pass and they included wrist bands that allowed them to EAT ALL OF THE FOOD THAT THEY WANTED to at the game!!! They went to the game, ate their hearts out, saw Jacob, saw a good game and then ate some more.
Sunday, Abby felt well enough to hobble to church. We went to the late service and drove two cars. We both had errands to run after church. None of us wanted to run all of the errands so we thought splitting up would work best. I took Alyssa to the mall where she got her ears pierced (for the first time!). Donnie and Abby went to Best Buy where Donnie bought more (of course) than what he planned to buy.
Our weekend turned out differently than we imagined but accidents/ things that we don't plan for/ anticipate are an unfortunate part of life. Grateful for family with whom we are in this thing together!!
Candy for the parade- Abby and a couple of dancers from her dance studio were to pass these bags of candy out to kids along the parade route. Abby started to pass out the bags...
...which inadvertently led to this situation
Bearcats football on a Saturday night with all you can eat food? Doesn't get much better than that. At the game, Alyssa ate a lot of dishes with meat in them. She is normally not a big meater. On Sunday, I made meatballs for dinner which Alyssa, shockingly, loved. Donnie and I concluded that she probably ate more meat over the weekend than she ever has in her life.
All the love... Abby got flowers
...and a Get Well Soon Edible Arrangement
