Middletown Spring Blast Tournament
Alyssa's soccer team participated in the Middletown Spring Blast Tournament this past weekend and WON it!! It was very exciting for the girls. The games themselves were not super exciting- we won every game and no game was close; we were never behind in any of the games, but of course winning was exciting. Winning has been a somewhat elusive concept for these girls despite their talent. Last fall, the first time these girls played together as Cincinnati United Team Ajax, was not a winning season for the girls and they didn't make it to the finals of either of the two tournaments that they were in.
So starting off their spring season with 4 wins in a tourney was huge. This tournament was not one that we were originally going to do. But, tournament organizers needed another girls U8 team and we were able to enter it at a minimal cost last minute. That meant that some families already had plans for the weekend and not all of the girls could make it to all of the games (spring break started for a couple of the girls' schools and Ava's family took off for Arizona after she played one game and Ainsley's family headed for Hawaii after Saturday's two games). Also, our head coach Cory already had plans to be out of town. Nikki took over as coach and Donnie got to help her.
On Saturday morning, we defeated our first opponent, a team from Michigan 10 -3. Alyssa played defense the whole game when she was in. The second game wasn't until 3:30. Alyssa's team defeated a Cincinnati team 3-1. Alyssa's next game was Sunday morning at 9:15. The temperature was in the high 20's- not ideal soccer weather. The girls bundled up and beat their opponents FC Tippecanoe United, 4-0. It was on to the finals at 1:00. The air temperature had warmed up a bit but it was still windy. We knew it would be our toughest game. It turned out to be nothing to worry about! We breezed by the Lady Warriors 7-2. Alyssa played the entire games for both of Sunday's games. The girls who were missing from the team on Sunday, Ainsley and Ava, are two out of three best defenders- Alyssa being the other one. With the other A defenders gone, we needed a strong defender at all times. Alyssa held up fine. I think she started playing a little loosey goosey towards the end of the second game when it wasn't close and quite frankly, she was tired and cold. Overall, she played well and for the most part, when she was in, kept shots from being made. All of the girls were super excited to win the tournament and win a trophy!
