Haunted Classic Soccer
The cold weather arrived just a bit before Alyssa's outdoor soccer season ended. Her season concluded with the Haunted Classic soccer tournament in Beavercreek this past weekend. Saturday was a cold mess- it rained heavily during her first game Saturday morning (we'll blame the rain on her team's 0-7 loss :(). Her second Saturday game ended much better- a 3-3 tie and the rain was replaced by a breeze that necessitated saying often, "at least it's not raining." The sun was shining brightly on the Sunday morning game that we were quite certain was going to be a loss going into it (we were playing our league's best team-). We lost 0-2.
Alyssa is not one to get upset about losing. I don't know if she's able to see the positives- getting to hang out with soccer friends in between games, just getting to play a lot of soccer, knowing that she played well or what. Whatever the case, I'm glad that her team's losses are not emotional set backs for her! Her soccer club pushes teaching individual soccer skills as opposed to team specific work at her age group. As such, it's not uncommon for Cincinnati United teams at the U8 level to not have much success. Other teams work on passing, lining up for corner kicks, positions, etc. in training and Cincinnati United doesn't work on those components until the kids are older. The club has very good teams at older levels so hopefully Alyssa will find herself on a winning CU team at some point in the future! I'm just glad she's taken her team's losses in stride this season.
Webribed asked Jacob and Abby to come to the Sunday game with a promise to go to the Fairfield Commons Mall after the game. Family shopping trips always rally the troops! We ate lunch at the mall and shopped until the kids were satisfied with their haul and then they wanted to leave (I don't know why I had hopes of getting some running clothes. I guess that's what the week is for when they are in school!).
Lyss and Ava (in the goal) are our only defenders in the first game. In their last regular season game that they had played the previous Tuesday, Coach Cory had Alyssa be the only defender (besides the goalie). When the other team was on the attack, our mid fielders were supposed to play defense. Then, when we had the ball on their side, the mid fielders played offense. That worked for Tuesday's game when we played a weak opponent, but it was not effective against Impact, our strong opponent on Saturday morning. Donnie thought that the fact that their coach even tried such a set up indicated how highly he thinks of Alyssa's defense. The fact that we lost 0-7 was definitely not entirely Alyssa's fault nor an indication that she played poorly. All of the girls struggled and a couple of unlucky plays occurred- Alyssa was called for a penalty in the box even though it wasn't a penalty- Alyssa kicked the ball out first but when the other girl tripped and fell Alyssa was called with a penalty in the box. Impact scored on the PK. Also at least one of their goals resulted from Impact's scorer being offsides. Offsides weren't called in the tourney due to a lack of referees.

Alyssa played the entire second game- unless it was inadvertent by her coach, it was definitely a good sign that he played her so much. She played really well and was instrumental in one of the two goals that we scored in the last two minutes of the game to tie it up.
