Lady Gaga bow
Abby has taught herself how to fishtail braid hair and how to French braid hair by looking at youtube videos that describe how to do these braids. She experiments on her American Girl dolls' hair. Last Thursday evening, she came into my room with Julie, excited to show me the "Lady Gaga Bow" hairstyle. It's an updo style where the hair is shaped to look like a bow on top of your head. "It's easy, mom," quipped Abby. "I want you to learn it on me." Since she didn't ask me to learn the fishtail or the French braid yet was asking me to learn this suggested one of two truths: 1) Abby believed this was easy enough for me to learn as opposed to the other two and/ or 2) she really wanted me to learn this style and was asking me to learn it because she wanted her hair like that. I was a trooper and let her teach me. True to her word, it was really easy to do and Abby loved it when she looked in the mirror. "Wake me up early tomorrow so you can do this style tomorrow morning," she requested. It didn't take me long to do, but I promised that I would wake her up early so we could get a "head" start on her 'do.
Meanwhile, I took a picture and sent it to Giovanna's mom, Kristen. Kristen is a crafty, hairstyle loving kind of gal. She, like Abby, watches youtube videos to learn how to do intricate styles and braids for Giovanna's hair. Kristen texted me late into the evening saying she had spent two hours on youtube looking at hairstyles!
The next morning, I did Abby's hair in the Lady Gaga style bow. When Kristen came to pick up the girls to take them to school (Kristen takes the girls to school four days a week. It's hard to be jealous of her craftiness for too long because she's so nice :-), Giovanna's hair was also done in the Lady Gaga style bow. Giovanna's hair looked better than Abby's; her bow was more taut than Abby's (in my defense, a 10 year taught me how to do it in about five minutes- I didn't spend a lot of time figuring out a better way to do it!). They both looked cute sporting their Lady Gaga do's. By the time they got off the bus hours later, both of their hair was not in the style. Apparently, the style does not withstand hours of movement.
I was pleased that I learned this new style AND was able to do something that Abby really liked for her hair.
