Heritage

I had a hard time with heritage; I knew the general concept of the definition but still decided to look up the definition to give me some ideas as I scrolled through my photo log.

I came up with pictures from our recent visit to Hamilton, OH as a symbol for heritage. Hamilton is in Butler County, Ohio and is considered to be Cincinnati's largest suburb. It's also the nearest city to Oxford, Ohio where Miami University is and where Abby went to college. Abby went to Hamilton numerous times when she was a student at Miami because, well, Oxford is a small town and Hamilton is much larger with more shopping options, activities, and restaurants than Oxford has.

Hamilton is named in honor of Alexander Hamilton. Pop culturally, Hamilton is known as the titular character in the smash Broadway hit Hamilton. Ideally, the historical figure Alexander Hamilton would be known less for rapping songs about our nation's founding and having his character played by anyone besides a white man (whyyyyy? for irony? for art? dear goodness, make it make sense) and more for his historical significance vis a vis the heritage of our country. 

Open and/or closed

Closed- denied access to the web page where I can find sub jobs. I dotted all of my i's and crossed all of my t's; no one can figure out why I don't have access. Ah well, I tried. 

I spent $25 to get my sub license renewed from the state. Even though I can't sub right now due to not being able to access the web page where jobs are listed, I've still had a decent ROI vis a vis my sub renewal. I got into the museum that we went to last weekend in Columbus for free(!!) because I'm an educator. 😁 (That I can't educate right now was, thankfully, not dispositive. The only requirement was having a valid state substitute license.) 

Yellow

Yellow lemonade from a kid's stand in our neighborhood. 

Yellow popcorn- Donnie made it a mission to create movie theater tasting popcorn at home.

He bought a popper

... and researched the best products which he stores in the machine when not in use. He succeeded with his endeavor and makes the best popcorn! We try not to eat it too often since it's so unhealthy!

River

In Columbus the other weekend, we walked across a bridge that spans the Scioto River- I think? There were no signs for the body of water and another river, the Olentangy River, also flows through the city. But I think this is Scioto.

Middle

My sister had to have her head shot taken and she sent a copy of it to me.

She's so pretty! She's a year older older than I am but looks younger than me 😆

Of five kids in our family, Katy is the middle child. You know some people say that the middle child may feel more overlooked by parents since they aren't the oldest or the youngest? In my family, I don't think my sister felt that way. Of the five of us, Katy was by far the most popular in school. She was (still is...) vivacious, outgoing, friendly, and, as you can see, pretty as a picture so she was always very well liked and popular in school. Add in being super smart (she graduated third in her class (albeit the class was small but still it was an honor)) and talented (she was a professional singer for a short time after college) and you have a pretty great person. And one who wouldn't be likely to be overlooked as a middle child :).

I don't remember feeling envious of her (ok, maybe a little...)- more like proud to be related to someone so popular. We got along very well with each other despite having different temperaments, personalities, talents and interests. We shared a room and when we were younger, we played together constantly. We lived in the country in the middle of nowhere. Either our siblings were going to be our playmates or we were going to play alone :). By high school, my sister and I were practically a cliched trope for a book or movie about teenage angst- the popular older sibling and the younger, non popular sibling in her shadow. Guys, after reading The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne for English class and liking it so much that I read Nathaniel Hawthorne's complete oeuvre before graduating high school, I didn't really stand a chance to be popular, haha. I was true to my own self, I will say that for myself!! 

Money was tight in our household and $$ for good haircuts didn't make the cut, no pun intended.

We had two older cousin sisters who passed on a lot of their matching clothes to us. 

Oh heavens- I could go on and on about this picture and what it represents. Let's just say that I took the picture and I'm glad I did because it captures the outhouse on our property (we did have indoor plumbing and did not use this facility!) and the building in the background that we called "the shop" which was not to be confused with another building closer to our house that also went by the name "the shop." My siblings are the players in this game of kickball.

Here we are as young adults.

Anyway, back to the middle- these two cuties are both middle kids in their families out of three kids. I don't think that Abby felt overlooked as a middle child. She was one of those kids with a time consuming interest/activity- that of performing on stage. Her entire childhood leading right up to college was punctuated by private tumbling lessons for dance, private dance lessons, group dance classes, dance performances, dance competitions, theater performances, etc. As parents, we criss crossed the tri state and beyond and loved every minute of seeing Abby on stage which made all the time and money we spent to get her ready to shine on stage very much worth it. So, I don't perceive that she experienced middle child syndrome but she'd be the only one who could say that for sure...  

Corner

This is the corner of the house that I see in "my spot." In about three months, there will be a big ol' Christmas tree in the corner. Oh the difference the time of year makes :).
