UPitP- Third week of August- 17-23
Oh man, if it's possible, the third week of August was less exciting/ eventful than weeks one and two of August... and that's saying something :).
For a brief moment, I wondered if refilling the flour jar was going to be one of the week's highlights... talk about scraping the bottom of the barrel... er flour jar. No, this was thankfully not a highlight. It did remind me I haven't been baking much (making multiple batches of double chocolate cookies recently notwithstanding)- or at least not as much as I used to.
Alyssa continued with cross country practices. She received her cross country uniform at practice one day this week- it's cute! On Saturday, she and Donnie went to our local running store where Alyssa picked out a pair of running shoes with spikes that are designed for cross country running. In the spring, when she was doing track and field, she got a pair of spikes for the track; cross country spike shoes are designed differently since cross country is not run on a track. New shoes, new uni- will there be cross country meets?

YES! There will be. This week, the governor of Ohio said that high school fall sports will/ can happen (along with plenty of guidelines/ restrictions). The day before the announcement, I was reading an online news article from our local paper and apparently, people "in the know" were predicting that the governor was going to announce that fall sports could happen. People believed that the governor was in favor of fall sports because he, "likes youth sports." His liking of youth sports as a reason he'd allow them to happen did little to assuage me since I presume that he "likes businesses to operate" yet he closed a whole lot of them in March. Well, I was happy that "they" were right when the following day, the governor graciously announced that high school sports could happen. Some seemingly nonsensical (in my opinion) guidelines were issued for student athletes and coaches but there's nothing that can be done about them except to follow them.
Abby continued to work- her normal work days will be coming to an end when school starts. Speaking of school, she received some textbooks in the mail. She will be taking college and high school classes concurrently and therefore earning college and high school credit. She is super excited about this- as are Donnie and I. Between getting college credit for AP exams and the college credit she will (presumably) get, maybe she can knock college out a semester or so early and save us some money and her some time.
Das Auto part arrived from Germany for Donnie's "new" (that is, used) car (that's currently in Pennsylvania). The car will be fixed and then shipped to Ohio this week, hopefully. Donnie is going to have some work done on it here- a touch screen and camera added before we drive it.
Jacob started his first full week at his part time job in Cincinnati. It's a challenging job; hopefully he sticks with it and likes it well enough. On Sunday morning, I received a text from my friend who's also the mom to one of Jacob's roommates in Cincinnati. The text said, "They made the news last night." and it was accompanied by a photo that was taken from a video. The photo showed her son and Jacob from inside their house, looking out a window and laughing. The screen shot was from video of a news segment from a Cincy new stations. A headline stated, "College Kids and Covid-19. Live at 11."
My first thought was, "Oh, dear." What on earth was this news segment and why on earth was Jacob on it?? My friend sent part of the video that aired at 11:00 pm. The segment raised the issue of whether or not college kids were taking Covid seriously. Jacob and his friend were shown on the clip but they weren't mentioned by name or interviewed or anything. The tenor of the story was that college kids weren't taking it seriously. Donnie and I called Jacob late in the morning because we needed to discuss dinner plans we had with him later that evening.
We asked him how it came about that he and one of his roommates appeared on the news segment. He said that at one point on Saturday, they heard noises near their house and looked outside and saw a news crew setting up on the sidewalk almost right outside their house. Jacob and one of his roommates leaned out windows in their house to see what was going on. A news crew person spotted the boys and went over to them. The news person asked the boys if they would be willing to do an interview about Covid. The boys both said that they wouldn't do an interview. Jacob said he realized that the news story would likely be about how college kids weren't taking it seriously, were being irresponsible, etc. I was so glad to hear that Jacob had the horse sense to realize that the interview would not be set up to put him and his roommates in a good light vis a vis Covid and that he said no to the interview.
Donnie's birthday is this week. Sunday evening, we met Jacob and his girlfriend for dinner in Cincinnati for an early birthday celebration. We ended up at Montgomery Inn- the downtown location near the Ohio River. Montgomery Inn is an iconic Cincinnati restaurant chain with two locations. The other location is in Montgomery which is the only place I'd ever had Montgomery Inn (years and years ago). It was our third pick after options one and two didn't pan out for various reasons. Montgomery Inn is known for its barbecue ribs and none of us are huge rib fans so that's why it wasn't higher up on our list, lol. The food was OK- we likely won't be going back anytime soon but it was nice to get out of town, see Jacob and Autumn, have someone else prepare a meal, and begin Donnie's birthday celebration.
There's nothing quite like going to the university where we just paid the fall semester's bill... with all of Jacob's classes online. Maybe we should be part of a news segment entitled, "Parents paying too much money for online school." (!)
At Montgomery Inn
While the week here was a little bit humdrum, my sister had a more exciting week so I lived vicariously through her and pictures she sent me. She and her girls went to her friend's lake house located about 2 1/2 hours north of where they live in Ontario (it seems that most of her friends have lake houses or cabins up north or some member of their close family does- it's great to have such friends :))
The scenery is so pretty!
One out of the ordinary thing that happened was this cool and rainy day- it was Tuesday I believe. It was great- it rained a good part of the day and stayed nice and cool. Tomorrow (Tuesday), it's supposed to be sunny and in the nineties. I'm hoping that this week is as hot as it's going to get for the season.
