So that was Christmas (break)
The kids' breaks are over. The girls got a solid two week break (they've had less in years past so they were pretty happy with two weeks) while Jacob enjoyed an almost month long break from school. Ach so, all good things must come to an end and their breaks were no exception.
It was a very low key, low excitement kind of break which is pretty usual for us around here. Since we are all homebodies, it's not unwelcome either. The kids spent some time with their friends, some time with their significant others and a lot of time at home. The kids did wild and crazy things like staying up late and sleeping in late into the morning.
After Christmas, we had no out of town visitors which is unusual for us. We spent the week between Christmas and New Years relaxing, taking down Christmas decorations, shopping a little, and planning our next vacation among other things (planning our next vacation was definitely the most exciting thing that we did the entire break!).
Donnie worked a little over half of the day on NYE. Shortly after Donnie arrived home from work, we headed south to West Chester to Cheesecake Factory. Jacob drove separately because he went straight to UC from dinner to spend NYE with friends in Cincinnati. The rest of us went home, after stopping at Kroger to get dessert and clearance Christmas candy. Yes, we ate out at Cheesecake Factory and then had to make a stop because we didn't even get dessert at Cheesecake Factory- I mean, there we go again being wild n' crazy.
Weconsidered paying $12K to get a new furnace/ AC were told we should seriously consider getting a new furnace/ AC by an HVAC technician who came to look at our humidifier and ended up making some recommendations about out furnace/ AC. The recommendation of a new furnace/ AC would cost at least 12K-that was the cheapest option. Our furnace is not broken but the technician explained in HVAC- ese why we should consider getting a new furnace. I didn't understand the ins and outs of what he was telling me but apparently we were or could be (if we kept our furnace) in danger of carbon monoxide poisoning.
Instead of getting a new furnace, Donnie ordered some carbon monoxide alarms for the house. Definitely beats spending $12- 20k on a new furnace. We're just about on borrowed time with the current furnace but couldn't justify buying a new one when 1)- we didn't need a new one and 2)- had just a)- overspent on Christmas, b)- spent money on an upcoming vacation and c)- would be soon spending money on Jacob's second semester college bill.
Jacob's classes started a week after the girls went back to school. So that gave him an extra week with us. The week he was here and the girls were at school, I only worked 1 1/2 days so I was able to spend some time with him. We went out to lunch, we went bowling, and we watched The Office together. He went to the Y every day to work out and spent time with friends and his girlfriend. I was glad to get to spend some one on one time with him before he departed for school again.
I took him back to school last Thursday. Can't decide if I was happy or sad that he wanted to get back to school. Ok, happy because I'd hate for him to not want to return to college. A little bit sad, though, because I held on to some hope that watching The Office with me on the couch eating after clearance Christmas candy was about as good as it got for him :). Guess not.
I remain very thankful for our relaxing and enjoyable break!
Not sure what Donnie paid for these alarms but suffice it to say much less than $12,000.
