Kings Hammer Turf Classic Soccer Tournament
Jacob's soccer team participated in the Kings Hammer Turf Classic tournament last weekend. His team didn't make it to the finals. Nor did they win a single game. They tied one game and lost the following two. They were in the top division of the tournament which means they played tough teams. This is Jacob's first year on this particular team.
Jacob had two games on Saturday- both were almost an hour away from house. Unfortunately, they were so far apart in the day that we went home in between the first and second games. The result of going home in between games was that we drove for almost four hours on Saturday getting to and fro soccer games.
The first game that his team played was the only game in Ohio that Jacob played. It was played at St. Ursula in Cincinnati. The other two were in Kentucky- fortunately just over the Ohio/ KY border. Jacob's team was UP 2-0 with only about eight minutes left to play in the first game on Saturday. Our team giving up two goals so late was a very disappointing ending to what we thought was going to be a win.
Saturday evening, Jacob's team played at Northern Kentucky University's (NKU) soccer field. Alas, his team did not fare well under the lights at NKU. His team lost 3-1.
Based on the tie and the loss on Saturday, there was no way Jacob's team would make the finals. So Sunday's game was meaninglessness. Thankfully, it wasn't super early. Daylight savings started this weekend meaning that an 8:00 am game time would feel like a 7:00 am since we lost an hour overnight. Jacob's game was at 11:45 am. We did have to wake Jacob up- between DLS, the hour drive and needing to arrive 1/2 hr early meant that Jacob didn't get as much sleep as he'd wanted. But, he didn't wake up at the crack of dawn for his game which was nice.
Jacob's team lost this game 1-2. Although the game was meaningless for both teams as our opponent had no chance of moving on either, it was still competitive. The game had some excitement to it and not in a good way. At one point in the second half, one of the guys from the other team said a bad word to one of Jacob's teammates and then two hand shoved him to the ground. As the kid from our team was getting up, understandably upset about the events of the past several seconds, another of Jacob's teammates ran over to where the shover and the shovee were and placed himself (in a non threatening way) between the two. He appeared to do this to 1) protect his teammate from further assault and 2) keep his teammate from assaulting the aggressor. As soon as this event occurred, all of the players on the field left their positions and ran to be closer to the "action." Nothing else physical transpired, thank goodness. The referees must have conferred with each other for five minutes before handing out two red cards- one to the only person to physically lay a hand on another- the kid from the other team and the to the kid on Jacob's team who interjected himself between the two. When Jacob's teammate got the red, all of us parents started booing very loudly and yelling things like, "Terrible call!" and "Only the one guilty of assault should have the red card!"
Also, while the refs were conferring about whom to card, we parents exchanged unpleasant words regarding the incident (I mean, some parents did- obviously not me :)) with parents from the other team. No one shoved another so I guess you could say the parents handled things better (slightly) than the assaulter from the other team. Oh, and Jacob got a yellow card in the moments following the two red cards being handed out. Apparently he expressed his thoughts regarding the carding outcome to a referee standing near him and the ref didn't like that (heaven only knows what Jacob said to him. It probably didn't help that we parents were booing the outcome of the call when Jacob was expressing his thoughts on the subject...).
So that was the tournament. Not the outcomes that we wanted but we loved to watch Jacob play. He played most of his minutes in the number nine position. Donnie doesn't think it's Jacob's best position but of course Jacob's coach doesn't solicit parental advice on what position to play the players :).
Here are some pictures from the weekend:
The first game on Saturday- I have no pictures with Jacob and the ball at his feet. He did actually make contact with the ball despite my lack of pictures of it.
Saturday evening- heading into Kentucky to NKU...
Pretty city at dusk...
I love my new camera lens... Here is a zoomed out picture. Note the soccer ball in the very bottom of the picture.
...zoomed in on the soccer ball.
I didn't get good pictures of the game at all. I didn't want to use flash. I had to crank up the shutter speed but that made getting good pictures in motion difficult.
Sunday morning... heading to Kentucky via a different bridge
Touchy- feely!!
We are looking forward to more games (and ideally a win or two!) this season.
