Jefferson Cup Soccer Tournament

Alyssa's team traveled to Virginia to participate in the Jefferson Cup Soccer Tournament this past weekend. This is a pretty high level soccer tournament. For Alyssa's age group, 2006, there were eight flights or divisions of teams. Alyssa's team competed in the top flight. We knew the competition would be tough.

Just Donnie and Alyssa went to the tournament. I would have loved to have gone but there was no way I was going to leave the teens Friday morning to late Sunday (we did leave the teens at home over the summer for a tournament but I didn't want to do it during the school year). I'm used to getting text updates when I can't go to games; so does Donnie when he can't attend. The math doesn't add up for both of us to attend all of the kids' activities when they overlap.

Alyssa enjoyed the scenery during the drive. She'd never seen the Allegheny Mountains before this trip. Obviously a hike was not in order for the soccer weekend; appreciating the views out of the car window had to suffice :). She sent me some pictures. Alyssa has been to Gatlinburg, TN and has seen the mountains there. I can't wait until she gets to see the Rockies!

Now that we know the scenery out of the car window was nice, I supposed I should mention the soccer. Alyssa's team lost one game and won two games. Unfortunately, the loss meant that they didn't make it to the final game. It was a shame. Donnie said that they game they lost, their first one, our girls didn't play well. They probably could have beaten the team had they played better. Donnie said the girls played much better in the second game. In the third game, Sunday's game, they didn't start off playing well but they improved and ended up winning. The girls got to play teams they'd never played before- their first opponent (the team that beat them) was from Virginia. The second team that they played was from New Jersey and the third team was from Pennsylvania.

Saturday evening, Alyssa, Donnie and three other of her teammates and their parents attended a women's professional soccer match in Richmond, VA. Several women from the US Women's National team play on one of the two teams who played each other (Washington Spirit and North Carolina Courage). The girls and their families stayed until half time. Alyssa liked going to the game; Donnie said they got to see two awesome goals.

Sunday morning's game didn't mean anything- both teams were out of the running to make the finals by then. As soon as the game ended, Donnie and Alyssa headed home. Both ways, going to VA and coming back, Donnie and Alyssa only stopped driving once for gas/ food/ bathroom. They made good time coming home and were home by 7:30 pm (Alyssa's Sunday morning game was a late morning game).

Jacob and Abby and I had a quiet, somewhat productive, and mostly relaxing weekend. Malcolm was home from college for the weekend so Jacob was able to spend time with him. Abby had dance for most of the morning on Saturday. Abby and I went to a movie Saturday afternoon. I had almost talked Jacob into going. Good thing he didn't- he would have HATED The Greatest Showman. I wasn't so fond of it myself (I'm not much of a musical movie fan I've determined) and was glad that we saw it in the cheap theater and that concession stand attendant added lots of butter to our popcorn :). It's the little things...

Alyssa sent me some pictures from the road and Donnie sent me the picture of the girls heading into the professional soccer math.

Car drive with a view...

That blue sky... and one tree with leaves on it :)

Looks like they were rooting for the home team!!
