Snow Day or no?
We had a snow day on Tuesday in that it snowed virtually all day (ergo "snow day"). However, the kids did not get the day off of school so it wasn't a "snow day" as the term is colloquially used to describe a winter day in which school is canceled due to snowy/ icy weather conditions.
Weather forecasters predicted the snow but only predicted that our area would get about an inch of snow. They were off by about three inches or so :). The snow started at a most inopportune time vis a vis getting the day off or a delay occurring because of it. The snow started just about the time that school started.... and then kept coming down in fat, fluffy flakes all day. I was at Alyssa's school all day, subbing. I watched its progression out the window (as did the kids; they were sooooooo excited about it). Road conditions worsened as the day continued. By the end of the school day when the kids were lining up in their classrooms to head out to the buses, only about half of the buses had made their way to the school. The principal at Alyssa's school announced that bus riders would have to stay at the school a little longer than normal (to wait for the majority of the buses to arrive) while car riders could leave at the normal time. Fortunately for Alyssa, she was a car rider that day since I was at the school working.
When we arrived home, Alyssa asked if she and Abby could shovel our driveway (for a small fee :)). Abby didn't care to go out in the snow so just Alyssa went out to shovel and after she completed that, she joined the throng of kids outside playing in the snow.
Meanwhile, activities for the evening were being canceled left and right. The school canceled all evening activities- games, practices, etc. The place were Alyssa does gymnastics canceled all its classes. The gym where Alyssa does DPA closed for the evening. I do believe we had a bona fide (pre) winter storm!!
Alyssa went outside after dinner, too, to play some more in the snow. I took some pictures of it. It was too pretty to not :).
I knew there was the possibility of a school delay the following day. Sure enough, school was on a two hour delay on Wednesday. The kids enjoyed two hours less of school, as did I, since I was subbing on Wednesday. Wednesday evening, we received a call that school would be on a two hour delay on Thursday due to dangerously low wind chills.
So, while our snowy Tuesday didn't end up being a snow day for the kids, it did get them a two hour delay the following day. And, the plunging temperature Wednesday evening greatly increased the chance of more sleep for the kids as they had another delay on Thursday. All in all, not a bad outcome for the week before winter break.
Alyssa did such a good job shoveling. I was tempted to give her more money than our negotiated deal. Then I thought about how much money we're spending this month on Christmas gifts and thought, nah, she'll get the agreed upon amount :).

I took these pictures in my neighbor's yard. Alyssa was playing with Avery- that's why I was in my neighbor's yard (I don't just randomly trespass to take pictures!!).
