Berlin, Maryland
While in Ocean City, Maryland for Abby's dance competition, we ventured a bit outside of the city. On two days, we went to nearby Assateague State Park. One of the towns that we saw signs for as we drove out to Assateague was a town called Berlin. One of the dance moms from our studio said that she and her husband went to the town of Berlin to have lunch on Sunday. She said the town was a quaint charming town and the place where they had lunch was very good.
We (when I say "we" I generally mean Abby, Heidi and her daughter Natalie since we all hung out together almost the whole trip) decided to check out Berlin on our way back from Assateague on Wednesday. It was nearing dinner time so we decided we'd eat there.
Three words to describe Berlin: Oh My Word! Or another three: We loved Berlin! It reminded me a little bit of Stars Hallow from Gilmore Girls. Or Mayberry from The Andy Griffin Show. Not that I exactly remember what Mayberry looked like, but in my mind, I image it looked a lot like Berlin. Mom and pop stores, old local banks, historic churches- this place oozed charm. After the commercialized garishness and gaudiness of Ocean City, the town of Berlin presented itself as a charming alternative to Ocean City. It wasn't on the water as was Ocean City, but I would sacrifice that to stay in Berlin if I ever had to stay in the area again.
The movies "Tuck Everlasting" and Runaway Bride" were filmed in Berlin. One thing that somewhat took away from Berlin's charm is the fact that Berlin know it's a pretty fine town. In 2014, it was voted the "Coolest Small Town in America." I personally would use the word "charming" to describe it more than "cool" but it was obviously an honor to receive that award. The businesses of Berlin took that designation to the bank. On Thursday, when we came back to Berlin to shop and look around some more (most stores were closed on Wednesday), almost every shop carried products that proclaimed Berlin being the coolest small town in the country. I thought the constant use of the moniker a bit braggadocios even though I could understand why that name was played up so much.
I took a number of pictures and I'll explain a little bit about most of them:

The town has a shoe repair shop
This was inside a shop called "Sisters." It was one of the only shops open on Wednesday when we were in Berlin.
A Methodist church- OK lots of towns have Methodist churches but this one was extra pretty :).
A bakery without an outstanding front window display just doesn't happen in Berlin...

We thought this was a toy store but it turned out it sold old DVD's. Abby loved the Star Wars detail in the window.

This is where we decided to have dinner. We took these pictures outside before we ate. It was the kind of restaurant where you just knew the food would be good.

Water to refill our glasses was in this cool carafe
Speaking of water, check out the water glasses (I'm consciously making an effort to not use the adjective "cool" since I seem to be overusing the word)...
Natalie and Abby had fun taking "artsy" pictures for vsco.
Abby and I split an appetizer (on right) and burger/ fries. Naturally, a sign in the restaurant said the food was locally sourced. I would have been shocked it hadn't been locally sourced. I just can't imagine seeing a GFS truck making any deliveries to any restaurant in Berlin.

Not only does the town have a yarn shop called "A Little Bit Sheepish"...
...all the sidewalk benches are covered in crocheted (or knitted- my yarn knowledge is lacking) in artistic coverings.
There are also dog biscuits for your BFF on the sidewalk

Late Thursday morning, we came back to Berlin. The shops were open and we saw items with this phrase everywhere ...

We had lunch at Rayne's Reef. We eat at restaurants with soda fountains all the time, doesn't everyone?

I do have to say that the street lay out was odd!!
...but that charm makes it seem somehow as if it was all meant to be!!
I suddenly want to knit or crochet or whatever one does with yarn purchased at places like "A Little Bit Sheepish."
