Christmas Eve
Our Christmas Eve was good... mostly. Not all of it was good but some of it was. I knew it would be a busy day since we host on Christmas- there's so much to be done around the house, food prep, etc. so our day started bright and early. Donnie took the entire day off work- something he normally doesn't do when Christmas Eve falls on a week day. I was so glad that he was home. He made an important discovery in the morning when he was in the basement- water was coming down the basement walls from the ceiling. Donnie knew from where the water was in the basement that the water was coming from our refrigerator (the water was leaking from the fridge to the kitchen floor to the basement). We knew we had a leak in the refrigerator but thought that it was contained.
We worked on cleaning the water up from the floor, inspecting from where in the fridge the water was coming from, moving the fridge to try to get all the water- all that was a joy. We finally decided we had to turn the water off in the fridge which meant no ice and no water coming out the dispenser- not earth shattering problems but definitely annoyances. Then I noticed that the temperature in the freezer was no longer at zero degrees, the temperature at which we keep the freezer. The outside of our fridge displays the temperature of both the refrigerator and freezer. The freezer temp kept going up but the refrigerator temp stayed the same. That was good but I was worried about the freezer. Donnie ended up running to Home Depot or Lowes and buying a freezer to put in the basement so we would have access to a freezer until we could fix our freezer in the kitchen. He also bought two huge bags of ice to place in the new freezer so we'd have ice for our Christmas guests since we turned the water line off in the refrigerator. The freezer temperature eventually went back down to zero so the kitchen freezer wasn't broken after all.
The freezer/ refrigerator fiasco took a lot of time out of our day. I roasted a turkey breast and made a pumpkin pie for Christmas day in my non refrigerator/ freezer stress moments. Donnie, when he wasn't purchasing a new freezer for the basement, oversaw the cleaning of the kids' rooms. That was no fun at all but by the time we were ready for church at 4:00 pm to make it to the 4:30 pm service, all the kids' rooms were cleaned, the kitchen was cleaned up (sans water/ ice from the fridge but that was not something to fuss about), water was not seeping into the basement, the floors were swept, we looked presentable- whew! All that was accomplished up until 4:00 pm took literally all day!
Church was great and then we headed to Donnie's mom's place. Her new condo is really small; she rented the clubhouse of her condo place to host a Christmas Eve get together. She forgot which church service we were going to and called Donnie several times to see where we were (she called while we were at church- thank goodness Donnie had his ringer turned off). We've gone to the 4:30 service on Christmas Eve for the past 15 years and I told her this year we were going to the 4:30 service but she forgot and so everyone was wondering where we were. They started eating without us, which was fine. We were just happy we had food and I was happy that I didn't do a thing to prepare the food :).
We opened our presents, chatted with family and then left at a reasonable time. It was nice to get home at a decent time. My brother John had arrived right before we had to leave for church (he didn't go with us to church or to Bev's) so we were able to catch up with him a little bit and continue making preparations for the BIG DAY the next day!
This Star Wars Lego set from grandma would be the first of many Star Wars items that Alyssa would receive (Alyssa only received on SW item from grandma; Donnie bought Alyssa many SW items that she opened at our house on Christmas day).
Jacob received a lot of nice clothes, i.e., brands that are acceptable to him
Cindy and Mark got Abby the Urban Decay Naked eye shadow collection that Abby has wanted for a long time. She was super excited to receive it!!
