Company Picnic and B-I-N-G-O
Donnie's firm had its annual picnic on Saturday at Thomas Cloud Park in Huber Heights. We always go to the picnic unless we have a child on a soccer field playing at the same time as the picnic. Conflicts have happened in the past but we've been able to go the past few years and for that I'm thankful.
The food at the picnic is on point. The main dishes- MEAT- are grilled over charcoal manned by a few of the men of the firm. The meat selection is impressive- filet mignon, salmon, chicken breast, fancy sausage, and plain hot dogs and burgers for the kids. The side dishes and desserts are ALL from Dorothy Lane Market. A huge tray of Killer Brownies? Oh, it's there. Drinks, well, the usual picnicy type of drinks abound- juice boxes, water, pop, and of course an assortment of adult beverages (can you have a work function outside of work without booze??).
Shortly after everyone finishes eating, it's time for the main attraction of the picnic. BINGO! Bingo cards and yellow highlighters are distributed to all who decide to play. The prizes for winning are compelling- $25.00 Visa gift cards. Also, just the right amount of rounds are played- too few and you wouldn't feel like you had any possibility of winning; too many and it wouldn't be as exciting because you figure your time to win was inevitable.
Jacob is my Bingo Buddy. A Bingo Buddy is one whom you're emotionally invested in winning; of course you want to win yourself. A Bingo Buddy is one whom you want to win in addition to wanting yourself to win. Jacob and I discuss a bingo game as it's going on in low voices. "I only need one more- B11," one of us will say. And the other will be listening and hoping for B11 in addition to whatever B's or G's he or she may need. We glance frequently at each other's card to see how the board is shaping up. I love having a Bingo Buddy!
Jacob and I were Bingo Buddies per usual on Saturday. Alas, neither of us won. I was happy to hear Abby exclaim, "BINGO!" at one point and happily pick up her $25.00 Visa gift card. She had that card spent mentally before she sat down at the table after picking up the card :). When it was time for the very last game to be played, Gary, the announcer, remarked that the last game's winner would receive TWO $25.00 Visa gift cards. And wasn't I just sweetly surprised to hear a little voice pipe up after only about six letter/number combinations were called and say, "Bingo!" (best bingo card ever) and it was the quiet voice of Alyssa! She won the two $25.00 gift cards. How exciting! And Rineers winning two rounds of Bingo including the bonus round? What??
The playing of the bingo games almost concludes the company picnic. The very last event of the picnic is called Taking Home Leftovers and it's a very exciting event because unlike bingo which is pure luck if you win, Taking Home Leftovers only entailsgrabbing nonchalantly (trying not to look or act too greedy) picking up piles of boxed up pasta salad, meat, and dessert to take home.
After I participated in Taking Home Leftovers on Saturday, we made our way to the car. The girls were super excited at having both won gift cards. I knew how badly Jacob had wanted to win a gift card. I said to Alyssa, "Since you won two gift cards, why don't you give Jacob one of them? Then all three of you would have a $25.00 gift card." She replied, "NO WAY!," indignant, as if I'd asked her gouge out one of her eyeballs and hand it to Jacob. "But you just got super lucky to not only win, but to win the round where two gift cards were given. Don't you think it would be kind to share with Jacob?" I asked. Alyssa is a generous person by nature and can be quite tender hearted so I really held out some hope that she would give Jacob one. "No! He wouldn't give me one if he had won two of them and I'm not giving him one," she replied emphatically. I tried once more to appeal to her to no avail. "It's ok, mom," said Jacob. "She's right. There's no way I'd have given her one if I had won two." I thought Jacob handled the whole thing very maturely and honestly!
See how dirty the outside of the container of Killer Brownies is? That's from grubby hands opening the container! This was our take home Killer Browner container.
DLM pasta salad- simply the best... Our take home container that only I partook of!
I forgot to mention that there's always a craft table at the picnic. The girls enjoyed painting little wooden structures this year; last year they painted ceramic piggy banks. So cute!
