The first days of school- Abby
The first days of school- Abby edition
Abby began junior high last Tuesday. No, the girl who's asked me repeatedly over the years to home school her was not looking forward to the big day. Quite the contrary. We'd gone to the junior high the previous week where Abby received her locker number and schedule. She was also open her locker which did quite a bit to ease her mind. Several kids had malfunctioning lockers and I'm glad that Abby was not in that lot.
When Abby arrived home from school on Tuesday, I asked her how her day was. She replied, "Great," in a tone of voice that I couldn't decipher. I wasn't at sure if she was being sarcastic or serious. It turns out it was genuine. She had a good day, thank goodness!
After the third day of school, Abby told me that she thought her friendship group from last year composed of her, Mara, Alyssa, and Holly would remain intact. Abby has at least one class or occasion with each one. She has homeroom with Mara, lunch with Alyssa and French with Holly. Additionally, Abby has the same lunch period as Megan from dance. Megan is an 8th grader. Abby and Megan haven't danced together much so they're not great dance buddies but she's a familiar face and a nice girl. Abby and Megan have been sitting together along with Alyssa and a couple of others at lunchtime.
Academically, I think Abby will be fine. She is taking French and I know she's hoping she'll like it. She'll probably be in a little bit of shock about how hard it is to learn a language. But, if she wants to, she'll find a way and she'll do it well! Our friends Andy and Stephanie went to Paris earlier this year. They brought Abby some cute items from the Paris Ballet (Abby doesn't personally like to do ballet but she knows that ballerinas and ones who dance at the Paris Ballet especially are rock stars of the dance world). They also brought me back some cookie cutters (including one of the Eiffel Tower) that were made in France and purchased at a Parisian bakery. I want to incorporate the Eiffel Tower into Abby's birthday- maybe make it a French theme, but only, of course, if she's still into France and the French language in a month. Depending on how French class goes, that could be the case or it may not be :).
I'm excited to see how the year goes for her. She's smart and willing to work hard. She has a great group of friends (Hanna is also at the junior high and she and Abby have study hall together next semester) and she wants to succeed. Maybe after this year, she'll not ask me to homeschool her . One can hope, oiu?
Sadly, I don't have many pictures of the first day of school. We underestimated how much time it takes to get ready when you're moving practically in slow motion due to being so tired.
My prayer for Abby for this school year is that she enjoys learning, spending time with her friends, and remembering how special and loved she is.
