6th grade stuff

Thursday was supposed to have been the first day of summer break for the kids but it wasn't. The kids had to make up two days of school due to using too many snow days. Thursday should have been a day of extreme relaxing- everyone sleeping in followed by spending hours in blissful good moods due to no school.

Thursday ended up being a good day, just a hectic one. It was not the first day of summer break. Rather it was the second to last day of school and a very busy one at that.

Thursday morning, I attended the 6th grade awards ceremony at Abby's school. We'd received a letter from the school stating that Abby would be receiving an award. The ceremony started at 8:00 am which was a problem since Alyssa gets on the bus around 8:20 am. I had to leave no later than 7:50 am to get to Abby's school on time for the ceremony (hooray for living less than a mile from the school; still I had to park and get in the door a few minutes before the awards started). I could have dropped Alyssa off at my neighbor's house who would have taken Alyssa to the bus stop, but I hated to drop her off so early. I had another solution: grant Jacob's request to skip school on Thursday (the students were doing nothing academic at this point) and have him stay with Alyssa until she could leave the house and walk to the bus stop with the neighbor kids.  So that's how we handled me leaving the house before 8:00 and Alyssa getting on the school bus after 8:00 am :).

The award that Abby received was not a unique one; still I was proud of her. She, along with 158 other six graders (def. not unique!), received grades the first three quarters of the year that averaged 90% or higher plus to receive the award, they could have received no grade lower than an 84. There were a few individual awards for subjects that Abby didn't receive but I was very proud of her for getting good grades this year.

When I arrived home, I had about  two hours to get things done around the house before mama's taxi services were needed. As previously stated, Jacob was skipping school on Thursday. He and Malcolm asked if I'd take them to Kings Island when Malcolm was done with his last final at 11:40 am on Thursday. I didn't mind taking them BUT, I needed to be back to Abby's school at 12:45 pm for a talent show that Abby was participating in. Jacob and I joined the long line of parents at the high school waiting to pick up their children after finals (or in my case, picking up my neighbor whom we were taking to KI). We finally got Malcolm in the car and made the almost 30 minute drive to KI. I dropped the boys off and turned right around to go straight to Abby's school for the talent show.

Abby was one of four dancers in the talent show; the others were musicians. Abby performed her routine really well. It was a routine she choreographed herself. All of the sixth graders and the staff were in the gym so everyone got to see Abby dance. In the school world, athletes and academic superstars are the kids who stand out; the kids whose talents fall outside the realm of athletics/ academic usually remain unknown for their talent. So it was great for everyone at the school to get to see her dance. She received many compliments from students and staff the rest of Thursday and on Friday, the last day of school. Performing was a great way for her to shine and I'm grateful that she had that opportunity.

Our busy day was not yet complete. Abby had dress rehearsal for her dance recital at the high school starting at 5:00 pm. I stayed for awhile but then left to go to Kroger to pick Abby up something to eat and to get gift cards for end of year presents that I was compiling for Alyssa's teachers.

What should have been the first day of summer break turned out to be very much school centered but it was a great day so I won't complain too much :-).

At the award's ceremony...

Dancing at the talent show- Yes, she's supposed to be on the ground here and she purposely only has a shoe on one of her feet.

Turning... I didn't get great pictures and only snapped a few. I wanted to watch the dance not just take pictures of it :).

This was Alyssa's teacher gift that I put together from the class. I bought the gift cards and flowers  while Abby was at the dress rehearsal and put this together when we arrived home.

Letters that the school sent to us, ensuring us that Thursday would be a busy day ~
