6th Grade Field Day

Abby's 6th grade had its field day the last day of school, Friday, June 5th. Abby asked me numerous times prior to the last day if she could skip field day. Two out of the three kids had already skipped a day of school that week so who was I to deny the third child the opportunity to skip? Abby had good reasons to want to skip the entire day. Obviously, nothing academic was occurring so she wouldn't miss any learning (the last few days of school are pretty much tax payer supported child care). Friday was supposed to be hot and the kids would be outside all day. Like literally all day. The PTO was even providing lunch for the kids, outside. Abby HATES to be out in hot weather if she's not by a pool. The biggest reason why I was ok with her skipping was that she had her dance recital that night. The dance recital would require a lot of energy and focus so I didn't care if she didn't move around all day in the hot sun.

I left the decision about whether to skip or not up to her. Peer pressure got the best of her. Her friends told her she simply had to be at field day. So she agreed to go to school. The day required lots of volunteers, too. I didn't sign up to volunteer until I knew that Abby was going to school which worked out well for me. Since I signed up so late, all that was left for me to be was a "floater." I just had to walk around and assist where necessary. The slacker in me appreciated this low responsibility job :-). Plus it meant that I was able to hang out with Abby and see what she was doing whenever I wanted to. 

The PTO rented several inflatables which were a huge hit (until one of the parts of one of the inflatables injured a child to the extent that that an ambulance had to come to the school for him). In addition to that, there were games like corn hole, water sponge games, volleyball, jump rope, etc. Abby ended up having quite a bit of fun even though it was hot. Some of the games were in the shade and the water games helped when she was out in the sun. I think she was glad she went to school on the last day :). I was glad to get some pictures of her with her friends. Also, all of the teachers were out at field day too and Abby loved being in pictures with some of her favorite teachers. It ended up being a great way to end the school year.

Here is Abby with her math teacher, Mr. Bridges. Mr. Bridges likes WWE and Abby and Mr. Bridges talked quite a bit about wrestling. He seemed to get a kick out of the fact that she likes wrestling so much.

Abby and her 6th grades friends- Alyssa, Mara and Holly. These girls met when they were in the same homeroom on the first day of school. They became friends pretty much right away and stayed that way the whole year. One of the girls posted this picture on Instagram and wrote: I had an awesome year because of them (smiley emoji). Indeed, they had a lot of fun in school and they got together quite a few times outside of school and always had a good time together.
