Beyond Busy Weekend Part 3- Soccer Saturday
At close to the same time that Abby and I left Saturday morning for Kettering, Donnie, Alyssa and Jacob took off, too. They were headed to Clearcreek Park. Clearcreek Park is where all of the Springboro SAY soccer games are held. Our kids do not play SAY soccer (it's rec; they all did play SAY soccer for a season or two when they were younger) so why were they heading there?...
Jacob reffed his first soccer game! We made Jacob get his ref soccer license in the summer. Reffing was not his idea and in fact, he complained pretty mightily about it. We thought it would great for him to get outside his comfort zone and do something different that would teach him responsibility. Also, refs get paid. Not much, but every little bit helps and heaven knows that we are constantly handing Jacob money for snacks at games, movie tickets, pizza with friends, etc. I told Jacob that he would need to start using his own money to pay for little things. Naturally, he was opposed to this idea. Why work and have to earn money when previously all he had to do was ask us and we generally gave to him?
Jacob only wants to ref Candy League games this fall. He reffed a Candy League game on Saturday. Candy League games are the least competitive and the players are the youngest. Jacob did not want to ref games in which scores are kept and games matter in terms of ranking of teams. Donnie and I agreed that for his first season reffing, it would be good to ref at a very non competitive level. Jacob has been to way too many soccer games where refs blow calls and get screamed at by parents and coaches. Jacob did not want to get yelled out!
Donnie stayed at Clearcreek Park and watched Jacob ref. Donnie said that Jacob did a great job. After the game, both coaches came over to Jacob and told him that he did a good job. That was really kind of the coaches. I'm sure they saw that he was young and figured he was pretty inexperienced. To encourage him, they complimented him. The refs' main responsibility in the Candy League is to blow the whistle every 3 minutes for subs to come in. Refs also need to call blatant fouls (which he had to do once) and keep track who the ball when out on when balls goes out of bounds.
Right after the game, Donnie, Alyssa and Jacob headed to Patrician Allyn Park for Jacob's soccer game. Jacob's team, Boro United, won 2-1. Jacob had the game winning assist. Donnie said he played well the whole game.
After the soccer game, Donnie, Alyssa and Jacob decided to eat lunch at Bob Evans in Springboro. There, a very exciting event happened... Donnie noticed an extremely tall man and shorter woman enter the restaurant. It dawned on Donnie that man was named Khali (he's 7ft. 3 inches) and the woman was Natalya from WWE. Abby and Donnie LOVE WWE and watch it every Monday and Friday. If they can't watch it, they DVR it and watch it when they can. Abby wants to be a WWE Diva when she's older. That's what Natalya is. Abby loves Natalya! Donnie recalled that there was a WWE event in the Dayton area during the weekend which explained why they were in the area. Knowing how much Abby loved WWE, Donnie and kids approached the table where Khali and Natalya were sitting. Donnie apologized for intruding but said he had a daughter who loved WWE but unfortunately wasn't there. He asked if they could all get a picture taken together. Natalya said to tell Abby Hi for her. Jacob called Abby to tell her about running into Khali and Natalya (Abby and I were in Kettering for Skate Dream Dance) and Abby about died. She couldn't believe that some members of the family got to meet WWE people and she didn't.
On Monday, I posted the picture of Donnie and kids and Natalya and Khali on Instagram. I tagged Natalya and mentioned how sad Abby was (and I tagged Abby) that she didn't get to meet her. Natalya then followed Abby's Instagram account. Abby was soooooooooo excited. So Abby did get something out of the WWE encounter.
I have no pictures of Jacob reffing or of his soccer game since I wasn't there :-). I only have this one little gem from Bob Evans..
