Monthly Musings

On this first week of fall, and one where the weather feels nice and fall like to boot, it was hard to resist answering these fall themed questions.  However, it seems like a decent bit of the information is redundant from posts I've already written this week :).

1. I prefer apple pie over pumpkin pie because of the buttery, streusel topping on apple pie. The top of most pumpkin pies are bland- it's just the pie. Now of course you add whipped cream which helps but you have to add that- it's not part of the pie.

2. In my Monday's post, I referenced making a pumpkin dessert over the weekend- a pumpkin dump type cake- that was really good. On Tuesday, I mentioned it again because I wrote a post about pumpkins and I provided a link to a recipe for it. On Wednesday, I mentioned the cake again in a Hodgepodge question. And now I'm talking about it once again! (In my defense, I've been responding to fall themed prompts!!) If I write a post for Friday, should I mention the cake 😆? I think so!! Anyway, the recipe that I used can be found here:

Pumpkin Dump Cake

Though I've only made this once, it's become a favorite and I will be making it again!

3. I do decorate for fall- the inside and out. I wrote a post about our fall decor on Tuesday. When my kids were little, I started putting orange lights on outside shrubs and trees- this was before outside Halloween became much more popular (truly the only area where I may be a trendsetter...). A couple of my neighbors have commented that their kids mentioned how much they liked to see the orange lights that I had on display. Those kids are now in high school and college so this was a while ago. It felt good to know the kids appreciated seeing the lights :).

This year, my decor style is pumpkin core- I'm not adding anything Halloween related. It's pumpkin or bust over here :).

4. I've never had a latte of any flavor including PSL  so I'm going to go with apple cider.

5. Desserts for Thanksgiving- from pie to cookies. This fall marks the third one where I've made hot pepper jelly. Not really a baked item but it's something homemade that I make in the fall because my garden bell peppers don't tend to ripen until fall. Not to toot my own horn, but people whom I give this jelly to tell me they love it (though maybe they're just saying that to be nice?).

6. I use a fall scented wax melt year round. It's my "house scent." I don't melt wax constantly but whenever company comes over, I melt this wax melt.

7. A food that people like that I don't? Hmmm, the first one that comes to mind is avocados. I'm sure there are others but I can't think of anything else.

8. I like the taste of candy corn especially when paired with something salty like pretzels or peanuts. I don't tend to go out of my way to consume candy corn. You reach a certain age and you have to make tough choices with regard to calories. I would rather consume "junk/high calories" on something besides candy corn.

9. I used to decorate for Halloween in mid September or so. So far this year, I've put up no Halloween decor and plan to keep the decor pumpkin and fall like.

10. For the outside of our house, I have orange lights that I place around our front door and then I put them around bushes, too.

I moved the Great Pumpkin to the patio so he's in an indoor/outdoor space.

  2. Good point about candy corn not being your first choice - same! I do love the look and taste of the candy corn/salted peanut combo. I did unsalted and I felt it needed the salt, fyi.
I love the idea of dumping a cake mix onto any tip of fruit filling. I have frozen strawberry filling in my freezer right now that I need to use.

  3. Barb decorated the house for fall last week as well. She put something in the bathroom that smelled like Fireball. When I ask her about it, she said, "most people call that cinnamon!

  4. Love the fall decor. I got mine up and went straight into Halloween since I'd be doing that next week anyway. This post is making me hungry!

  5. I have a lot of pepper jelly from a friend of mine and while I'd like to make my own, I just do not understand the process! Seems complicated.

  6. I think you kind of have to mention the cake tomorrow now just to round out the week, right? LOL I've never had a latte of any kind either and would happily take apple cider over it any day.

  7. I love apple pie and I am planning on making a pumpkin pie soon just so my family can try it. Yes, you have to keep mentioning the pumpkin dump cake, it looked so good!
I love all your pumpkin decor and you have just reminded me about the wax melts I have that I never got around to using last year.

  9. I indulge in one bag of candy corn a season. I like it, but I want it once and the craving is over. I haven't bought a bag yet, but will probably get one in October and then regret all the calories I just consumed with no health value :).
