Friday five point five
1. We are on a two hour delay this morning! It could turn into a full day off but I´m not holding my breath and I´m being thankful for the delay. We were under a winter weather advisory and originally supposed to get much more than we got. By later in the day yesterday, the forecast had been revised and we weren´t supposed to get as much. It looks like we got an inch and a half of snow so a two hour delay is generous. There was or is (haven´t checked the forecast) a chance of snow this morning. If it comes within the next two hours, maybe they´ll call the day off but I doubt it.
2. One odd thing about the past two weekends is that we´d been out of town the Thursday and Friday before and returned home on Saturday. The past two Sundays we´ve been home all day (besides going to church) doing catch up tasks at home (and yes, that included a nap last Sunday as I´d slept poorly the previous few nights). The tasks did not include going to the grocery store and with me working five days a week right now and not wanting to do anything I don´t have to after school means that we´ve been eating meals that have come from food out of freezer and pantry a lot this week. Not necessarily a bad thing to use up items that I pass over when I regularly stock up at the grocery store... We had a pretty old pot roast one evening for dinner (the deep freezer keeps meat fresh for an almost shockingly long time!) that tasted good. I made burrito-chens one night for dinner (in German, adding ¨chen¨ to the end of a word makes the word mean ¨small.¨ There´s no such equivalent in the English language so I borrowed from the German language :)). All I had were small tortillas so I filled them and added a small amount of olive oil to a pan with which to brown the bottoms a little. They turned out cute... and good.
3. The aforementioned nap on Sunday that I mentioned happened this past Sunday and it turned out to be not a good thing- I slept ZERO hours Sunday into Monday. None, zilch, nada. It was depressing and tiring to be awake, not asleep yet feeling vaguely tired at the same time for HOURS and knowing that I´d have to go a whole school day before I could rest my weary head on the pillow. After school, I did lay down but I could not sleep! I finally crashed around 7:00. I´d been awake for over 36 hours!! Of course I woke up early the next morning because I don´t/can´t sleep too many hours in a row. To keep this post from devolving into a full blown analysis of my odd sleep issues, I won´t say much more about my sleep except to say that I slept well the rest of the week for which I was thankful! (And I won´t mention my odd dream where I almost drove into Lake Erie (it would have been the GPS´s fault a la The Office) which, in my dream, looked more like a Caribbean ocean with aquamarine water and white sand than... what Lake Erie actually looks like. (Though Lake Erie at Presque Isle in Erie, PA did look remarkably like the ocean while the Lake Erie beaches that I see when visiting family in Canada look nothing like the ocean.))
Lake Erie Beach in Canada
All right, I said I won´t mention my odd dream about Lake Erie but I actually already did so I´ll just add a couple of more details. In my dream, the road I was driving on ended at Lake Erie so I had to turn either left or right. The road ¨T¨ed and if you kept going straight, you´d drive into the lake. I turned left to head towards Buffalo- (I guess I was headed to Canada via Buffalo?) Buffalo was to my left in the distance in this dream, but soon found myself driving on the beautiful white sand and thinking that I should get off the sand in case a rogue wave swept me into the lake. That´s it. That was the dream. I never made it to Buffalo/Canada and I never made it off the sand but at least I didn´t get swept away so we´ll call it a wash- no pun intended.
4. It´s the most wonderful time of the year for college students/ interns at colleges and their parents as the semester is winding down and kiddos will be coming home soon. The girls will be coming home soon which means among other things that our bedroom will once again become wrapping paper central. I´d turned Abby´s room into my gift wrapping storage center but I doubt she´ll want that role for her room when she returns.
5. Speaking of not going to the grocery store often and the girls coming home soon, I CANNOT avoid doing it much longer. I´ll be cooking for five again and it´s much harder to cobble meals out of miscellaneous items in the fridge/pantry/freezer. It really was a lovely break from the grocery store. I haven´t done a full fledged grocery run in weeks! I have been getting some fresh items when I´ve had to go to Sam´s Club for and Donnie has picked up a thing or two for me when he´s gone to Walmart but I haven´t done a normal grocery run in weeks.
5.5. The week at school went very well (so far- today´s classes will all be shortened due to the delay). I was really nervous about how the subs would do last Thursday and Friday when I was out. While they didn´t leave the best notes for me, they gave me some indication of where they left off so that helped. I didn´t have to cover for other teachers this week during my plan period which meant that I had time to get everything in order for my classes and I could read some, too. I am sure looking forward to the weekend but am grateful for a pretty nice week overall!

Aren't dreams weird? I have the strangest ones, and dreamed crazy things two nights in a row this week. I am glad you're getting used to your job; it takes a minute, right? I couldn't do life without Walmart plus. I have my groceries delivered when I order, because the last thing I want to do at the end of a day is go grocery shopping. It's worth the money it costs! I enjoyed reading your post today!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Jenn! A year or so ago, I started to compile a list for delivery on Kroger´s site. It took me so long- it would have been much quicker to just go to the store since we live so close. I´m sure if I worked full time I would do some sort of delivery like Kroger or Walmart. I can see how Walmart + would be a great option for you!
DeleteMy college student arrived home Wednesday and his roommate came in yesterday; he'll drive her the airport today and she'll leave her car here for some free parking for the next few weeks. It was rather fun to cook for 6 people last night; the night before that I had only cooked for 2 and that was much harder (Evan and my husband-- not me).
ReplyDeleteThanks, Joanne- it´s definitely pretty easy to get used to cooking for fewer people- how nice of your son to take his roommate to the airport and to store her car at your place. Parking at an airport is not cheap, especially if you´re talking weeks.
Delete2. Not to go all Spanish teacher on you but - hey - "ito" on the end is how you make things small in Spanish and burro is donkey. You are eating a small donkey. The reason is that the tortilla carries all the goodies like a donkey would! Bahaha! I realize you said English, but I miss teaching - the good parts!
ReplyDeleteI hope it turns into a full day - you went from not zero to 10 with your long term sub but 3 or 4 to 10 and this is a hard time of year to do that.
However, the good thing is that one of the holiday prep podcasts I listened to said to clean out your freezer!
Not sleeping well or at all is the worst as a teacher. I had one of those days usually once a month.
Did you ever tell us what subject you are teaching?
That big grocery shop will be fun/expensive/exhausting! Ha!
Truth, Amy! I went shopping straight from school and it was a doozy. So funny that you mentioned ¨ito.¨ Donnie mentioned ¨ito¨ when I told him I was adding ¨chen¨ to the end of burrito. He said he thought that ¨ito¨ was what was used in the Spanish language to make an object diminutive. So really I should have called it a burrito-ito- since the og ito has been subsumed into the word? I´m almost positive I couldn´t sleep because I was worried about going back to school after having a sub for two days! My sub job is mixed- I teach two classes of math, I co-teach a math class, and I teach a science/social studies class plus I have a study hall.
DeleteI'm sorry you're not sleeping. That is so rough. Dreams are crazy and I find the strangest to be when people from very random seasons of my life are all in the same one. Like someone I went to elementary school is there with my next door neighbor from 1998. Huh? I'm sure they mean something, but I generally don't know what that something is. I hope you have a low key restful weekend. Not typical of a December weekend, but hope you at least get a nice nap!!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Joyce! Dreams are so crazy and I find that the older I get, oftentimes I can´t remember them much longer after I wake up. For some reason this one stayed with me. We have plans tomorrow but there´s a snowstorm brewing so we may be stuck inside. There are worse places to be!
DeleteI always have weird dreams when I'm napping or I guess in lighter sleep. I hope you get some better sleep this weekend!
ReplyDeleteThat´s exactly the same for me! Thanks, I´m not as stressed about Monday so I hope that I´ll sleep well....
DeleteYou are working hard and I'm sorry about the sleep deprivation. I can relate to that. I hope you can rest this weekend.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Marilyn! I´m cautiously optimistic about sleep this weekend...
DeleteYea for a snow delay! I'm so sorry about the sleep issues. I know how rough that can be. Hope you get some good rest this weekend.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Tanya! The delay was really nice!!
DeleteThe two hour delay is such a good idea, here you either struggle to get school or work in awful weather or have the whole day off and usually by lunchtime the weather is better than it was at 8am in the morning so it feels like a wasted day.
ReplyDeleteWe had a few weeks of just eating out the freezer and the cupboards and I liked it, we saved some money and used up lots of things we'd forgotten about.
Eek to not being able to sleep! I am glad things are better now. I was up at just before 6am this morning because I woke and couldn't doze back off. Saturday is supposed to be the day when I sleep until at least 9am. Hmmf. What an odd dream.
How wonderful that your girls are coming home soon.
Thank you, Kim! Yes, our district doesn´t two hour delays often but they are really nice to have when the weather is terrible in the morning! We very well may have one tomorrow morning as the temps will be in the negative with wind chill. It´s freezing (actually well below freezing) here! I hope it´s warmer where you are! I have been sleeping really well ever since getting no sleep the one night. I am hoping that is a one off and I will not have that situation again for a long time!
DeleteI heard Cinci got quite a lot of snow Saturday afternoon/evening - did you too? My sis said it would probably be melted by the time we got there, which is "fine" with me. Her snowblower still isn't fixed and this is the second time they've "needed" it this year. Apparently the parts are finally there for Tom to fix when we get up there next weekend - ha!
ReplyDeleteGlad this sub job seems to be going well - will you do it again? I need a reason to clean out my fridge and pantry - that can be a January "low level goal" maybe :). The sleep thing is NUTS, right? It's got to be time-of-life. . .and it's soooo annoying. I listened to a podcast once that says menopause mimics pregnancy and lots of examples of that.
Enjoy having the girls home!! At least we have one that still has somewhat-regular school breaks, but she fills them with other things. . .the honeymooners should be back today or tomorrow and we'll see them next weekend in OH. This is certainly a time of life where we have to find things to do to fill our time - glad to have the holidays to concentrate on right now!
Thanks, Jenni! Yes, we got about six inches of snow and Warren County was under a level 2 advisory last evening meaning we shouldn´t be driving unless we really needed to be out. Did going to the UD basketball game count, lol? We actually started the trek to Dayton and turned around!! We have never had a snow blower- our driveway is pretty small and it´s something that we usually only need a few times a year. Some people on our street have them so it´s not like they´re completely uncommon. That is really cool that Tom can fix a snowblower! Does he do repair work on your cars?? Menopause and pregnancy- who´d have thunk- they seem completely incongruent except when you´re talking hormones out of whack- then it makes sense!
