The first half of October
The first half of October had some highlights and I figured this is as good a place as any to document them.
We had some wild n' crazy weather in the beginning of October. Crazy, hot weather. Temps got in the 90's the first three days of October. One day, October 2, it was 94 degrees. We don't usually have three days of 90+ degree days in the summer, let alone in October. Of course we knew it would end, and it did. But it seemed like, for a while, that summer like weather was never going to end. Writing this, I have a blanket over my legs and my portable heater is about a foot away from me, blowing warm air. Fall weather has arrived...
Jacob came home from college two times the first half of October. One time was to attend his girlfriend's homecoming dance. We only saw him briefly that weekend. The following weekend, he had fall break. He couldn't come home until Friday and it didn't seem like we saw him much more than we saw him the previous weekend but we definitely saw him more. It was great to see him- it still seems a bit like he's away at camp and will be coming home for good any day now :). I like how we live so close to him for easy weekend get togethers.
The second time that Jacob was home, his car died for good. It didn't actually die, we just put it out to pasture. It needed a new tire and we were already resolved to not spend a dime more on the car; we certainly weren't going to spend the many dimes it would take to buy a new tire. The car had run flat tires so Jacob was able to drive his car one last time and follow Donnie in Donnie's car to CarMax from his girlfriend's house. The guys left the car at CarMax and rode back home in Donnie's car. Donnie didn't have the title with him so he went back to CarMax with it and sold it to CarMax a couple of days later. Didn't even get a grand for it which I guess is not surprising since it had 200,000+ miles on it, bad tires, needed new brakes, and wasn't exactly in pristine shape, looks wise. It was a good car for Donnie and then for Jacob. I'm also really glad that I took pictures of Jacob with the car right before Jacob left for college. Would hate to have not had any photos with the Beedo (the car's name- it's a long story).
Abby turned 17 in early October. We had two celebrations for her. One was the day after her birthday with family members and one was the following weekend with her friends. Jacob's birthday is close enough to Christmas that he'll always be at home on break when it's his birthday. So for the next four years, we should see Jacob on his birthday. Abby only has one more birthday with us before college- when she's at college (assuming she does the traditional four year college which she likely will), her birthday falls at an ordinary, non- holiday-y time so we will likely not see her on her actual birthday. Abby stayed busy with dance and with the fall play. She has one of the leads so she has many lines to memorize and practices to attend. Looking forward to seeing her on stage in a non dance capacity.
Alyssa is keeping busy with school and soccer. She had soccer games two weekends in a row in Indianapolis. The following weekend she had no soccer games at all. So right now, it's all or nothing, weekend wise :). On the weekends, She's either traveling or she's watching the Hallmark Channel with me or hanging out with friends or Abby.
Donnie has been busy with work (as ever, for the past twenty years!!). Busy is good- it's how he earns money but I don't see how he does it day in and day out. He is such a hard worker. Lately, when the lawyer work day ends, the evening laboring begins. He's been working really hard on the bathroom. So much tiling... It will look great when it's done but in the meantime, the project is requiring hours and hours of labor on his part.
I've worked every school day so far this month except for one day when I couldn't. It's tiring but I'm happy to be making some money for the family and most days aren't too bad. On Columbus Day, we didn't have school- the school was not celebrating Columbus' travels and subsequent arrival in the Americas, rather it was a teacher work day. We were celebrating not having school. The opportunity to sleep in... to do whatever we wanted with the day... to know there'd be no homework Monday night because there was no school on Monday- it was an incredible feeling on Sunday to know that there was no school the next day. Abby had a coffee date Monday morning and Alyssa and I ran a couple of errands. We were home the entirety of the afternoon and it was wonderful!
Our mini fridge stopped working in early October. I never realized how much I liked it until I *had* to drink warm pop. We got the fridge about twelve years ago. We put it in our laundry room which is also the room that leads to the garage from our house. It was so convenient to grab water on our way out the door and just the extra fridge space was nice to have. We won't get a new one until we get rid of the old one and I don't think the regular trash pick up will collect it because of the Freon. I need to call the city to find out how to dispose of it but it's been a low priority. In the meantime, warm pop and bottled water for us unless I remember to put some in our kitchen fridge.
Our forecast for early October... what on earth? It actually got warmer on a couple of days than was forecasted.
October 1, was supposed to only hit 92 but it got to 93.
One of the days that I worked, I only worked half a day. I needed to go out and get gas because I was driving the soccer carpool later that day and didn't want to stop on our way to soccer to get gas. The station I went to just happened to be across the street from a Burger King which I happen to love. No one else in the family will eat Burger King so popping over to the BK drive-thru and subsequent Jr. Whopper and onion rings ordering is something I treat myself to every once in a while. I loved having lunch at home and not eating out of a brown bag at school :).
There were definitely some there. I was terribly cold out in the garden but didn't mind because I'd not had fresh carrots in a long time. No pain no gain when you go out in the garden and the temperature feels like 43 degrees.

I didn't realize until I looked at my camera roll but I randomly took a picture of Jacob as he was driving to his girlfriend's house for her homecoming dance. It would be the last time that he drove this- his first car (but we didn't know it at the time).
What a gorgeous... young man. Just kidding, I mean, he's nice looking but clearly the gorgeous one is his girlfriend 😊

One day this past week, the temperature was supposed to get to the mid sixties but it never made it out of the forties. Perfect fall weather (from inside the warm house especially). I decided to make chicken noodle soup in honor of the cool weather. I realized I hadn't gone out to the garden for fresh carrots in a while. I was hoping there'd be enough carrots for the chicken noodle soup.
There were definitely some there. I was terribly cold out in the garden but didn't mind because I'd not had fresh carrots in a long time. No pain no gain when you go out in the garden and the temperature feels like 43 degrees.
