Oh good, Jacob is home. Oh shoot, he doesn't live here... alternatively, Jacob has started college
So, something weird has been happening ever since we moved Jacob into college. He didn't take his car to college with him. Before college began, the sight of his car on the street in front of our house indicated that he was home. Jacob spent a lot of time not at home the past few months. Between working, spending time with friends, and becoming better acquainted with a comely young lady, it wasn't uncommon for me to arrive home from running an errand and and note that Jacob's car was not parked in front of our house indicating that he wasn't home. Now when I see his car parked in the street, my first thought is that he's home. Then I remember that not only is he not home but that he doesn't live at home anymore.
We bid Jacob good- bye mid week. It's comforting to know he's not too far away at the University of Cincinnati. For a long time, I thought he should go somewhere further away to college- to get out of the general area where he's lived his whole life. The college that I attended was a three hour drive from my house. It was in the same state but in a different region of the state. When we dropped Jacob off, I realized how different the environment is where he'll be living- a city instead of the small suburbs where he was born and then raised. So, while he's not far distance wise from us (a good thing (to me a at least)), he's in a completely different setting- urban rather than suburban. Who knows, after college maybe he'll give rural living a try (NOT likely but you never know).
We are adjusting to life without him living with us as he's adjustingto the freedom that he's wanted for a long time to life without living with us. He's been not just very communicative with us by text but very sweet to his sisters by text. With great freedom comes great responsibility to make those paying for your freedom feel loved is how I'm thinking his thinking is going right now :). Or maybe he just misses us. We are excited for his future and where God will lead him.
The place he's living in is incredibly nice. It's brand new. In fact, not everything was complete when we moved Jacob in. I was hoping to get some pictures of the common areas and his place but there were swarms of people around plus we were pretty focused on just getting him moved in. It's an apartment but one has to be a UC student to live there so it's affiliated with the school. The place has great amenities like a nice sized pool with a volleyball net and a basketball hoop. Also outdoors, there are built in grills and gas fire pits that residents can use. The work out room is huge and has everything one who works out could want (UC students have access to university facilities for free but I'd definitely use the one at his place for convenience and because it's so nice). There's a tanning bed residents can use (just stay pale, Jacob), a music recording studio, a golf simulator, a movie room, an arcade area- all of which residents can use for free. Donnie jokes that he's going to vacation there this summer. A couple of academic amenities exist, too. There are numerous study rooms with computers for residents to use and residents can print documents for free. Sooooo, Jacob was not too upset about calling his new place home for the school year.
Speaking of being upset (well, more like sad) and his car (from earlier), Jacob bid farewell to his car for good the day that he left for college. His car needs a substantial amount of (expensive) work done to it and no one wants to pay for the repair. Donnie bought the car almost twelve years ago, put a ton of miles on it, and then let Jacob drive it when Jacob got his license. It had been a great car but in the past year, it incurred some major problems, some of which we fixed to keep it running so Jacob could have a car. We are not planning to repair its latest problem. We will just trade the car in when we buy another car.
The day that Jacob moved into UC, Malcolm moved back into college, too (Miami of Ohio). Jacob and I were loading stuff in the car when Malcolm came over to our yard to give J some last minute college advice and to say good- bye. Had to get a picture of two of my favorite college kids :).
