Berry exciting! And, berry good!!!

There's nothing like strawberries to bring out my puntastic abilities...

We reached an impressive/ shocking/ fantastic milestone with the strawberry plants in the garden. On Sunday, Abby and I picked 80  (yes 80!!) strawberries. I counted them as I washed them/ cut the hauls off of them. The vast majority of them were quite small but still... Also, some of them had bird bite marks in them. Gross (or should I say, "fowl"??), I know, but waste not, want not, right? We picked the bird bite ones and I cut off the bitten out part.

The kids, well, the girls, were pretty excited about the berries. The previous day, Saturday, I'd picked about 20 strawberries. And all of last week, it seemed like we picked at least a few each day. So, I'm declaring the strawberries to be a success story. They may be the only success story of the garden this year so I am clinging dearly to their success 😁.

I decided that strawberry shortcake was in order to properly and deliciously celebrate the berries. I made shortcake (and by made I mean I added  milk to Bisquick mix, plopped globs of dough onto a cookie sheet and baked  so nothing impressive there!) and whipped up some whipping cream. The only bad part about making shortcake and the (in my humble opinion) impressive tasting strawberry shortcake is that only Abby and I actually like strawberry shortcake. Not to fear, Jacob and Alyssa love strawberries and cream so they were happy with that. Donnie just ate some strawberries. And Abby and I enjoyed the strawberry shortcake.

These were the strawberries that we picked up on Saturday- definitely not 80 of them. If it looks like they are arranged in the shape of the state of Ohio, then I did a good job with the arrangement 😜. I placed the berries randomly on the table and realized they sort of looked like the state of Ohio. So then I placed them in positions to really try to have them look like the state of Ohio. Dorky, I know :).

And then there were 80... Sunday's haul

I sent my sister this picture and wrote, "I'm basically dad now." Some of the produce from dad's garden would turn out wonky like this strawberry below. He'd take pictures of it (or my mom would) and sometimes submit the pictures of the wonky produce to our local newspaper where they'd be published (ah, small towns). On second thought, my garden produces about 1% of what my dad's produced and this picture is not going to be published in any newspaper so I'm basically not dad.

I decided that the brown bowl they were in  would fit whipping cream in it nicely. So, I switched things up:

Strawberry shortcake!
