A Dance-tastic weekend!!
This weekend was Abby's first dance competition of the season. Everything went so well. Here are the reasons it was a great competition:
1. It was local- in downtown Dayton. That meant that our nearby family was able to come and watch Abby dance. And by nearby family I mean family very close to us such as Donnie :). Donnie misses the vast majority of Abby's dance competitions because most of them are out of town. In the springtime, which is when the majority of dance competitions are, one of our soccer kids usually has a game or two and Donnie has to take the soccer kids to their games and can't leave town. In addition to her father being able to watch her dance (:)), other family members like Alyssa, Abby's grandparents and Uncle Doug were able to see her dance.
2. Abby personally danced very well- her individual scores were high for her solos and she placed really high in the overalls. Her duo with Hanna likewise did well and lastly, the group routines that she performed in did well. So, the dancing part (pretty much the main thing in a dance competition) of the weekend couldn't have gone much better.
Here's how the dance weekend panned out:
Abby danced her solos on Friday at 6:00 pm and about 6:30 pm. The girls and I (we didn't make Jacob go for a couple of reasons) skedaddled out of Springboro a little after 4:00 pm. Abby had her make up on and hair done; she'd just need to get dressed and stretch before dancing when we arrived. We picked up Hanna on our way to the "big city," lol, Dayton. The dance competition, Nexstar, was held at Memorial Hall which is about a 20 second drive from the parking garage of Donnie's building and the one that I use when the kids and I meet Donnie for lunch. In fact, shortly after we arrived at Memorial Hall, Alyssa texted Donnie and asked if he'd take her back to his office so she didn't have to wait an hour and half at Memorial Hall for Abby to dance. So, about 4:40, Donnie walked from his office building to Memorial Hall to get Alyssa and the two of them walked back to Donnie's office until it was time for both of them to walk back over to Memorial Hall to watch Abby dance. Lots of walking for them but the day was quite nice and the two buildings, Donnie's work building and Memorial Hall, are very close to each other.
Abby danced her solos SO WELL! She's doing two solos this year so twice thestress fun. She actually makes it look easy. I guess it's because she's a natural on stage... At the awards, she received the highest possible scores on both of her solos, won both of her categories (musical theater and contemporary) and came in third place overall out of all the dancers in her age/ division (I think I counted 24 dancers that she was up against). So, success!!!
On Saturday, Abby only had one dance and that was her duo with Hanna. That wasn't until 3:00 pm but we decided to get to Memorial Hall plenty early. Plus we had to stop at Walmart on our way because of all things, we were low on bobby pins. If I've bought one bobby pin, I've bought a thousand but on Saturday, we were down to about 10 of them. The girls performed their duo really well and we were so pleased when the results came back that the girls placed 2nd in the overalls for their age/ division.
On Sunday morning, Abby danced the five group routines that she's in. Abby's group was supposed to be at Memorial Hall at 7:00 am (her first dance wasn't until 9:00 but their dance teacher wanted them there early). I didn't realize that Abby needed to be there that early so Hanna's mom picked Abby up at 6:30 am and I drove in a little bit later. All of the routines went well and a couple of them placed high and/ or won special awards. Abby and I arrived home after the awards around 3:30.
It was a tiring, at times stressful and always entertaining dance weekend!!
Before the "good stuff" i.e. pictures of Abby dancing, I thought I'd post a few pictures of Memorial Hall. It was gorgeous (except for the bathrooms which were gross). Here is the outside. I don't know what "Fight Night" is and am not inspired to find out anything about it. The sign seriously detracts!!
