Soccer scrimmages; new soccer team
When Alyssa first tried out for a select soccer team at age seven, she tried out for Cincinnati United, the club where she'd had training in CU's academy program. She made the top team for CU Mason and her team was called Ajax. CU names its teams based on professional soccer teams. So somewhere, there's a professional soccer team called Ajax. She played on Ajax for three years. Each year, she had to try out and make the team again. Last spring was the first year that her age group could try out for CUP which stands for Cincinnati United Premier. CUP is a very competitive soccer program; it's probably the best program around in the Cincinnati and Dayton area.
Besides the stress/ opportunity that came with trying out for CUP last spring, another change was the implementation of new age groupings. Prior to the change, age groups were based on players born between August 1st and July 31st. US Soccer changed the age groupings to calendar year. So, when Alyssa and the girls tried out this spring, she knew she wouldn't make the same team as some of her teammates because some of them were born in 2005 while she was born in 2006.
Alyssa made the top CUP team for her age group, the 2006's. The team is called CUP North 1. All of the girls from her Ajax team who were born in 2006 also made the top 2006 CUP team. So, she knows five girls on her team. The other six girls who made the team were unknown to Alyssa. Her team has had several training sessions so she's gotten to know the new girls a little bit.
Friday evening her team scrimmaged a girls' 2005 team. We (Donnie and I and some soccer parents from her old team) were very excited to see how her team would do on Friday- how they would play together as a new team. Our girls played really well. The girls' passing was really good. They shot the ball well. It helped that the team we scrimmaged was really weak. The other team never got a shot on goal. Our team ended up winning 10-0. Alyssa played mostly defense but she played up some, too.
The girls were in a great mood after the game and some of them went to UDF afterward for ice cream. The girls had a lot fun eating their ice cream, discussing the scrimmage and finding things to laugh about. Alyssa was in the best mood on the way home. She loved playing with her new team (that appears to be pretty good) and having fun afterward.
On Saturday, she had a training session scheduled. It ended up not being a training session but two more scrimmages. The girls scrimmaged the top 2005 CUP team and the second to the top 2005 CUP team. Our girls lost to the top CUP team but tied the second team. The CUP teams provided much better competition for Alyssa's team the Friday night team did. I didn't go to Saturday scrimmages. Once again, when Alyssa came home, she was in a great mood. Donnie said she played well, mostly defense and stopped a lot of shots from being made or from going into the goal.
So far, so good with her new team! We shall see how the season progresses as they begin playing tournaments and league games.
I was at Friday's game and took some pictures. The game went from daylight to virtual nightfall. The pictures didn't all turn out great. I just wanted to get some shots of Alyssa wearing her new CUP uniform for the first time!!
After Friday's scrimmage-
