Dance Recital

Abby's dance studio had its dance recital on Friday evening. Here are my thoughts on dance recitals in general. First- they're so fun to attend and watch. Second, they cap off a week of very intense dance practices (studio rehearsals, dress rehearsals) such that I'm anxious for the recital to occur. Getting close to the hour of the recital is exciting because all that hard work is about to pay off. Third, since Abby is a competition dancer, I've seen her dance the routines on stage numerous times prior to the recital. However, the recital is the only time most family members get to see her perform so it's a special night for that reason alone.

The recital went fine this year. Her studio did something different wherein the competition dancers performed all of their routines and then the studio did a "production" of Mary Poppins. All the rec dancers performed routines to Mary Poppins songs and one of the dancers, who has a pretty singing voice, sang the Mary Poppins songs while the dancers danced. The studio "borrowed" a male singer (our studio has no males in it) who performed all the male roles. Most of the competition dancers, including Abby, had small roles in dances and/ or scenes.

After the recital was complete and Abby had left the stage and joined us in the auditorium, a woman came up to Abby and told her what a good dancer she was nice- so nice to receive compliments from strangers. Abby works so hard week in and week out at dance- I love it when she hears positive feedback from people other than loved ones (who let's face it- would probably compliment her even if she weren't a good dancer!). We have a neighbor whose daughter joined the rec team this year. It was the family's first time at our studio's dance recital so they'd never seen Abby dance before but they've known her since before she took her first dance class. On Sunday afternoon, I was outside and our neighbors were out. They stopped by to compliment me on Abby and her dancing skills and to say how natural she looked on stage. One more bit of bragging and then I'm done :). I forgot about this until now. Right before the recital began, I saved several spots in the auditorium for family member who were coming. Several other "dance moms" where saving seats. One woman, whom I don't recall seeing before, remarked to me that Abby was her daughters' favorite dancer. I don't even know if her daughters are rec or competition dancers but I know they're really young. I'm also not sure how she knew that I was Abby's mom but, hey, I appreciated the compliment!!
