Weekend weirdness: end of soccer till spring, Bengals implode and SNOW

The highly anticipated weekend- after the first week back from school after break- arrived.

On Saturday, Abby had a two hour dance practice. It's the first of many Saturday practices she'll have as competition season looms closer. The dancers actually compete in late February so the competition season really is upon us. I decided to stay for the entire practice and see the girls dance their routines. I always drop Abby off during her weekly practices so I'm not familiar with the dances yet.

Saturday evening Alyssa played her last indoor soccer game of the season. Her team is not doing the second winter session in Monroe at The Field (the indoor soccer facility where they've played their games) or at Wall 2 Wall in Mason. Jacob's soccer team is not doing the second winter session at Kingdom (the indoor facility where his team has been playing). That means that we're done with watching soccer games until spring- probably March.  This will be our longest soccer lull in a long time. We are entering a soccer drought but when spring comes, it will not just rain soccer but pour soccer for our family.

The team that Alyssa's team played on Saturday is a Springboro team called Boro Blast. We played them earlier in the season. Interestingly, Alyssa only recognized one girl from her school who was on the Boro Blast team (Springboro has two elementary schools so most of the girls on the BB team must attend the other elementary. Also, the BB team was a mixture of u10 and u11 girls so some of the girls aren't in Alyssa's grade at school). The one girl Alyssa recognized, Katie, was a girl whom Alyssa played with a lot at recess last year because they had a mutual friend. After the first time that we played the BB team this winter, Alyssa and Katie hugged each other after the game. It was cute. This time, Alyssa said that the two acknowledged each other on the soccer field as well as after the game when they hugged again. Super cute and this time I took a picture of them. Alyssa said they don't play at recess together this year but Alyssa still really likes Katie. Who knows, maybe they'll both play soccer for Springboro High School in a few years?

Saturday evening and into Sunday morning I believe we all (except for Abby) watched the fiasco that was the Bengals- Steelers game. Abby didn't watch a minute of it, I don't think. Alyssa and I were hanging out in Abby's room part of the time but by the end, Alyssa and I were both watching the game upstairs from the landing near Abby's room. In a depressed state from the Bengals' loss, we went to bed.

When I woke up Sunday morning it was raining. I went for a run and during my run the rain changed to snow so by the end of my run I was covered in snow. It's not the first time I've run in snow, but this year, snow has been so rare that it was noteworthy to be out in it, not to mention to be covered in it.

We decided to not go to church Sunday morning. For one thing, we weren't emotionally prepared to see Steelers' fans wear their Steelers' gear and smug grins. Also, with the cold temperatures and snow, we didn't want to be out on potentially slippery roads.  But mainly, we didn't want to see Steelers' fans. We acknowledged that was a bad reason to miss church. We all gathered on the couch and I read a portion of scripture from John and then read part of an advent devotional to the family (not surprisingly, we didn't finish our advent devotional before Christmas so we still have a few days' worth of devos). We'll also watch the sermon together when it's on the church's website.

I woke Jacob up around 9:00 am Sunday morning (I didn't want him sleeping in too long and then not be able to get to sleep at a decent time that evening). He sat up in bed and the first thing he said was, "The Bengals lost," really dejectedly. I opened up his window blinds to take his mind off the loss and said, "Look at all this snow!" Seeing the snow put some (temporary) pep in Jacob. "Oh wow," he said excitedly. Then in an even more dejected voice then when he complained about the Bengals' loss, "But it's Sunday. Why did the snow have to come on a Sunday morning instead of a school morning?" I braced myself for a surly teen mood from him that day and he did not disappoint! He was in a bad mood all morning (reading from the Bible and our devo sadly didn't help). In the afternoon, Donnie took Casey and him to the mall to use some of his gift cards and he enjoyed that.

The girls played together all day Sunday. It was so nice to have them do that. They'd not played together at all Friday evening or Saturday. Abby complained that Alyssa's room was too messy to play in. Late Sunday morning, I was relieved when I heard Abby asked Alyssa if Alyssa wanted Abby's help in picking up Alyssa's room so that they could play in it. Alyssa gladly accepted the help and after cleaning up Alyssa's room a bit, the sister friends played the rest of the day and into the evening. Thank goodness for sister friends :).

We went to bed hoping that there may be a delay on Monday morning because of cold temperatures but alas that didn't happen. Super early and super cold, the morning greeted us for the beginning of a new week.

Here are a few not great quality pictures from the game...

Alyssa and Katie after the game

Our family and Chelsea's family were the last ones to leave. I took a few pictures of Chelsea and Alyssa in the bleachers together after the game.

They pretended to be glued together and made a half hearted attempt at a sleepover (since they were glued together and all...).

They became unglued "just for a few seconds."
