Summer break week 7
Lucky week number 7- no rain all week. It actually rained Sunday night, but I'm not counting that since it occurred at night and didn't mess up any pool plans. In Summer Break Week 6, rain interfered with swim plans on four different occasions (Tuesday at the Overdecks, Friday at Chelsea's swim birthday party, Saturday night at our neighborhood pool and Sunday at Bev and Scott's).
On Monday, Jacob took a total of two naps (tough being a growing teenage who needs lots of sleep) and in between sleeping, he hung out with AJ, Calvin and Casey. The girls played really well together most of the day. They also cleaned up their rooms quite a bit. After they cleaned their rooms, they begged me to take them to the Springboro Flea Market. Abby and I had gone once and Abby really enjoyed looking at thejunk stuff for sale. I enjoyed looking at it, too, but really didn't want a bunch more junk in the house. When just Abby and I went, I bought Alyssa a "vintage" Barbie doll; Alyssa was dying to know what other treasures the placed held. I warned them that the junk purchases were going to be few! After looking at all the wares the flea market had to offer, they asked for an upright jewelry box holder that they said would be perfect as an American Girl doll clothes wardrobe. I'm a sucker for anything that keeps them playing with AG dolls and the jewelry box was only $6.00. That was our flea market experience. In the evening, Brian took Alyssa and Avery to the pool and the girls asked if Alyssa could spend the night with Avery. I allowed the sleepover.
Tuesday morning (a wonderfully hot sunny morning), I took Avery, Alyssa and Ashley to the pool. Abby didn't want to go. The girls had fun but we didn't stay too long. Alyssa and Abby played all afternoon. Jacob hung out with Malcolm and Lily and Whitney.
On Wednesday Abby and Alyssa played almost the entire day together. Their play time together is a such a source of happiness for me! It's hard to believe that being three years apart in age, they enjoy each other's company so much. The resurgence of the AG doll playing also makes me happy. Jacob hung out with Casey most of the day.
Thursday morning, Alyssa had an orthodontist appointment (unfortunately for her, play time doesn't exist every second of every day but pretty close to it!). Abby tagged along to the appointment to, for she knew that the ortho office has complimentary cookies in the office (the appt was with the same ortho whom we used for Abby so she knows all about the office). Alyssa needs orthodontia and the dr. said we could get started on expanders and braces whenever we want to. I think we're going to wait until the fall, though. School is starting soon and fall soccer and I don't want to interject pain and food deprivation right now to Alyssa (keeping popcorn away from her is going to be really tough :(). At the conclusion of the office visit, the girls helped themselves to coffee (there were no lids for the coffee and Abby commented that there should be lids and I pointed out that the coffee was probably meant to be for moms and dads in the waiting room and not for children to grab on their way out like they were doing) and cookies. Alyssa begged me for two cookies since there were two different kinds. I let her because I feel bad for what's in store for her in a few months as a result of this office, i.e. braces on her teeth. Also, I noted that Abby only asked for one cookie and thinking back, she'd never asked for more than one cookie when we'd been at the ortho office for her regular ortho appointments. She's not nearly as into food as Alyssa is and poor Alyssa is about to have her food world rocked.
Friday was our busiest day (for the record, I prefer lazy days like Tuesday and Wednesday of this week) of the week. Brian had asked me if I could watch Avery and Ashley for him for a little bit in the morning. Then he was going to take the afternoon off of work and take the kids to the Miamisburg pool. He offered to take Alyssa, too (the Miamisburg pool is a very nice community pool/ water park. Alyssa loves it; the last time she went with Avery, the temperature was about 70 degrees. Friday's weather was perfect for a day at the pool). Abby was invited to a friend's house for the afternoon. Jacob hung out at our pool for about three hours with Malcolm. Good times for all the kids on Friday!!
And that was our summer break week 7.
Once again, I don't have great pictures from the week. It was not very exciting!!
This is kind of an odd picture: I don't normally post pictures of food (perched on my legs no less). Here is why I'm posting it. I made chicken pot pie on Thursday for dinner. I'd made this recipe once or twice before. I remember that Jacob liked it and I thought that Abby liked it ok. I've always LOVED pot pie; my mom didn't make it too often (it's kind of a pain to make so I can see why), but I was always so happy when she did. For this pie, I used my mom's homemade pie crust recipe to make the pie crust. It is the best. I actually like store bought, too, but this homemade version is not that difficult to make and it tastes a lot better, I think. Anyway, so I made this on Thursday and EVERY child in the house LOVED it. I don't think there's ever been a meal that I've made that they've all really liked. It was a moment. And then came the bad news: Donnie didn't like it. Donnie, who's never fussy about food and who gets mad when the kids complain about my cooking. That same Donnie doesn't like pot pie. He somehow doesn't like pie crust and since that's such a big part of it, the whole thing wasn't that great to him.
On Friday, there was a little bit left of the pot pie. All three kids were gone at the same time for a bit on Friday. Just because I could, I heated the last piece of pot pie, grabbed my Kindle, and headed to the deck to eat al fresco. And that's when I decided to take this picture.
I actually took two pictures... The sun was so bright so I had no idea if I was getting the shot or not...
When your 14 sits on the couch with you and sees you have your phone pointed at him...
This is what the girls wanted at the flea market. When I asked them why they had placed nothing in it, they said it smelled inside. I guess they didn't notice the smell in the flea market. Notice the flowered "wallpaper?" It's scrapbook paper masquerading as wall paper.
I couldn't help myself and I bought this vintage Barbie Ice Skater (I'm giving it away, though!!) at the flea market.
