Valentine's Day Weekend
Yesterday's winter storm may have wrecked havoc with our Valentine's Day plans to go out, but it could do nothing today to stop us from baking and decorating and eating Valentine's Day sugar cookies.
I decided to try a new sugar cookie recipe since I don't have a go- to recipe. I've tried many, but since we only make sugar cookies once a year, I don't remember year to year if I loved the recipe that we made last year. I came across a picture of a sugar cookie on Pinterest that had an interesting caption so I decided to try the recipe from the food blog from which the picture was pinned. The recipe intrigued me because the sugar cookie was made with shortening and not butter. But the icing recipe that accompanied the cookie recipe was a buttercream frosting that is, not surprisingly, made with butter. The combination of the not so rich cookie with the rich icing was a winning combination based on the number of positive comments that the post received.
One reason I wanted to try it was that I've never made buttercream icing before. I always use my mom's icing recipe. It is delicious and I've never strayed from it (except for red velvet icing when making a red velvet cake). But, I've had buttercream icing and of course, loved its buttery, smooth, richness. Trying a buttercream recipe myself was something that I've wanted to do for awhile, but never did, having always resorted to my mom's recipe. Since the sugar cookie recipe that I was contemplating called for a buttercream icing to go with the cookie, I figured now was the time to try buttercream icing.
After I made the icing, I must say that I was a little disappointed. It was good, but I expected it to be out of this world good like worth every calorie and increased sized muffin top as a result of over indulging. Then I frosted a cookie with it and tried that. And the combination was out of this world good. It was worth every calorie and increased size muffin top as a result of the consumption of it.
I was worried that the kids might not like the frosting as much as I did. Jacob actually told me that he really didn't like it and he is such a good actor that I thought he was serious. Then he said his tell tale line, "Just kidding," followed up by, "It's incredible. You need to make this more often." The girls liked, too, as did Donnie. As usual, the kids enjoyed decorating their cookies and eating lots of M &M's, icing, cookies, sprinkles, etc. It isn't often that they have a smorgasbord of sugary junk like they had in front of them today. They made the most of it!
The recipe for the cookie and butter cream icing can be found here.
Getting ready to decorate. I really need to find a cute Valentine's Day themed table cloth. It would add such nice ambiance...
The kids have at it...
This was my best attempt at capturing a smile from Jacob. Teenagers! They'll think nothing of posting a selfie but when mom gets the Nikon out, fuhgetaboutit :). Actually, Jacob is past the selfie phase on Instagram. He was all about the selfies for awhile but isn't anymore.
I {heart} thick sugar cookies. I should have made them all this thick. But then again maybe not. I can resist thin sugar cookies; thick ones like this, not so much.
Alyssa's cookies
The piece de resistance: I loved a huge heart shaped cookie cutter when I saw it in the Williams & Sonama catalog and decided that I needed to add it to our Valentine Day cookie making process. I think that it was a good call on my part. This cookie looks almost (but not quite) too good to eat! Alyssa made tiny heart cookies from the tiny heart dough cutouts in the Easy Bake Oven.
Happy Valentine's Day weekend!
