Hodgepodge

Linking up with Joyce for the Hodgepodge

1. When someone finds out what you do or where you're from, what's a question they always ask?

When people find out that I'm a substitute teacher and ask what grades I typically sub in and I tell them middle school- 6-8 grades, many people express negative feelings towards what I've just revealed. For instance they'll say things like, "I don't think I could do that!" or "That's a rough age for kids- I don't see how you do that." They typically don't have a lot questions except to ask if I've tried other grades/ages. I tell them that I definitely prefer these grades to elementary (they're so needy in the younger grades!) and I've never subbed high school (and don't plan to) so middle school it is :).

2. Did you participate in 'Greek Life' when you were in college, or have children who did? If so what was your experience like? Taking another tack...have you ever been to Greece? If not, is that a destination on your bucket list?

I didn't participate in Greek life in college. The school that I went to was pretty preppy (especially considering it was in a small town in Indiana!) and Greek life was popular but it held zero appeal to me. My college fund remained a constant $0 from beginning to end and whatever scholarships and Pell Grants didn't cover, I was on the hook for. I was all about cutting costs not adding additional fees including but not limited to sorority fees. It didn't sound appealing to me anyway. The "try out" aspect of it, particularly.  I felt a decent bit different from other students going into college. I was not from the middle class for instance and knowing that I didn't have nice things and labeled clothes were indicators to me that I was just a tad too much outside the norm of others in my cohort and because of that, trying out to to be "chosen" to fit in with a group of girls a) likely wasn't going to happen and b) didn't sound appealing to me.

Donnie was in a fraternity and liked it a lot. Jacob participated in rush, got a bid to a place that he thought he wanted to join but at the last minute decided to not join. Alyssa went through rush last year and got a bid at one of the sororities that she was hoping to get a bid from so she's in a sorority.  So far her experience has been quite positive. She's just moved into the house and so this year is the first year that she'll really get a taste for how she likes it.

I have never been to Greece. I'd like to go to it in the generic way that going to beautiful places sounds nice; however, I will not go to great lengths to get there nor will I be super upset or surprised if I don't make it there...

3. Do you like Greek food? If so what's your favorite dish?

Greek food is fine. It's not a favorite. I do like gyros and baklava quite a bit...

4. What incredibly common thing have you never done?

I've never been drunk or tipsy. (I realize that a state of being is not the same thing as actually doing something- maybe I should change it to, I've never consumed enough alcohol to be tipsy or drunk.)

I'm sure there are additional common things that I've not done- perhaps others'  answers will remind me :).

5. What is a telltale sign that you're upset?

I don't have a poker face so I'm pretty sure my facial expression indicates when I'm upset.

6. Insert your own random thought here.

Donnie had a nice birthday yesterday! Thanks for the birthday wishes for him :). When people have a birthday in his office, others bring in food for lunch. So he had lunch provided and he said it all tasted very good. We got pizza for dinner- kinda odd to not be eating it on a Friday but also kinda nice to do something different!

A late August birthday means that it wasn't uncommon for Donnie's birthday to coincide with the first day of school for him. A bit of a bummer to have your birthday fall on the first day of school!! His birthday fell on the first day of law school. Poor guy!

Alyssa's first day of classes coincided with Donnie's birthday- her classes began yesterday. So far so good for her. The temperature was great- very fall like and pleasant for her trek on the big campus.

She sent me these photos of her first day:

With a friend, er sister, in sorority nomenclature :).

I hope she continues having great days on campus!

  1. I taught for over twelve years - ten in high school and two in middle school. Prior to actually teaching, I was a substitute teacher. High school was definitely my favorite. Middle school kiddos were tough. High school kids were so much easier to relate to and, for the most part, more mature. Forget elementary school. I was never brave enough to dip my toes in that direction - too needy of children!

    1. That's exactly how I feel about elementary age kids- way too needy. Some subs prefer those grades and that is great- there is a need in all grades so it's nice that some gravitate to various grades. I have heard mixed reviews about high school from my sub friends who work at the middle schools and also our local high school. They mention the maturity level but they've also told a couple of horror stories (not literally horror but you know what I mean). I'm staying in my middle school lane for now!

  2. I enjoyed reading your answers! I think it's great that you enjoy subbing for middle school; I believe certain people can be great with certain ages, and that age needs people as much as the others. Now I'm hoping I never said that to you! I love those pictures of Alyssa on her first day; it was great that she sent them to you!

    1. Exactly- I'm thinking of two subs I know who prefer subbing at our K-1 building over any other building. Um, NO!! A thousand times. I subbed all day in KG a long time ago and it was brutal. It is great that different ages/grades appeal to different people- of course same with actual teaching. Thanks about Alyssa. I was shocked in a good way that she sent them to me.

  3. Glad your hubs had a nice day. I think my hubs will grill his own birthday dinner but that's we he enjoys. I have worked with all ages as I was a speech pathologist and we moved around a bit. Kindergarten is the perfect age. My absolute favorite. It's good to have people working in middle schools who appreciate that season. So many don't and I think the kids know that. Enjoy your day!

    1. Oops about just dissing KG! It is interesting how people have different preferences and it seems to all work out :). I think you're right that kids can pick up on adults who are comfortable around them and even like being around them. I just really like, overall, the middle school age group. They're not always easy to be around but the good moments outweigh the bad for me.

  4. I think kids that you sub for is a fun age. Old enough not to be as needy but young enough to have less drama than older teenagers. lol
I am glad Donnie had a good birthday! My youngest always has her birthday in the school holidays but my eldest being born in September had a few birthdays coinciding with the first day of school.

    1. Thanks, Kim! It is a pretty fun age and you're exactly right in your description of them. Oh that's too bad about your oldest and her birthday sometimes falling on the first day of school (unless she liked it!!).

  6. I'm with you on the subbing preference. I enjoyed Middle School/Junior High the most. I felt like I was completely invisible to High Schoolers and Elementary kids were so needy for their regular teacher it seemed, especially kindergarten. I found with Middle Schoolers there was still a hint of respect for the teacher in charge. :) Cute photos of your daughter's first day. God bless her.

    1. Thank you, Ellen! Exactly- my sub friends who prefer middle school like I do say the exact same thing about why we prefer middle school age kids to the younger and the older.

  7. Yep, no poker face here too.
Sending you more hugs... loved seeing the photo of your daughters first day.
    Happy Birthday to your sweetheart.

  8. I feel like everyone has mentioned Gyros; I can't ever remember eating/trying one. My nephew started school on his birthday this year and he was not a fan. Being a summer birthday I always thought it would be lots of fun to have a birthday while also at school because I remember in elementary school, in particular, the teacher gave out "cool gifts" like pencils, a bookmark, etc. and it seemed like the whole class tried to make it special.

    1. Thanks, Joanne! That's true about summer birthdays. I used to feel badly for my friends with summer birthdays :). I know that our elementary schools try to make summer birthdays more "equitable" by announcing on the intercom summer birthdays- they'd pick a week and anyone whose birthday fell in that week, they'd get to come to the office and get a pencil. The following week, they'd do another summer week's worth of birthdays.

  10. I would always prefer middle and high school to elementary. I didn't join a sorority for the same reasons you listed, and I guess we both lack a poker face. :)

    1. We have a lot in common today! It's interesting that a lot of people here say they prefer middle school and high school teaching/subbing- not too surprising but a little surprising...

  12. I can't give an opinion on what grade or age would be good to teach in school because I have never been a teacher. Happy Birthday 🎂to your hubby.

  13. Have you seen some of the Tik Tok videos of sorority life/rush/recruitment/fashion at the University of Alabama? Mark was in a fraternity and our daughter was in a sorority. Greek life changed between Mark's time at Auburn University and Laura's time at Auburn and it has changed even more since 2005-2009. Some of the girls record their outfits and tell how much money each piece cost. The $ amount is staggering to me!

    1. I've not seen those TT's but I'm sure my daughter has! I think that sorority life is even a bigger thing in SEC and southerns schools than elsewhere. My daughter told me that the "rich girls" get into the best sororities at her school. I asked her how anyone knew who was rich and who wasn't and she told me from social media you can tell... I can imagine how much money many spend on their outfits, getting their hair done, nails, etc.

  14. It's so tempting to say "I could never teach middle school!" LOL But I did, in a way, having taught my own kids and taught in a co-op. I did not care for teaching the little kids in a group setting, middle schoolers were just okay, but my favorite group was definitely the high school kids. So fun. Guess it's a really good thing that different teachers and tutors have different age groups they are most comfortable with. :-)
I don't really have a poker face either, so my family and good friends usually can tell when I'm upset.
Hope you're having a great week!

    1. You definitely taught middle school :). You could dole out discipline better than any teacher in a school setting could... Yes, for sure it's a good thing that different teachers have different preferences for age groups!
