Hodgepodge

Linking up with Joyce for the Hodgepodge

1. What is one good thing you often take for granted?

Probably my family and even specifically, my husband, now that there are just two of us at home. I feel like anytime you spend a lot of time with someone, it's super easy to take that person for granted. Of course, I try to routinely express gratitude and love towards my family but I know that my actions and word choices sometimes belie that gratitude when I am frustrated, stressed, etc.

2. What is the boldest piece of clothing in your wardrobe?

My first thought was that I don't own anything bold... though that is true, the question is "boldest" so I can't flake out and not answer :).

I will say my pleather pants are my boldest. I actually have two pairs of them- a black pair and a cream colored. They were both impulse purchases. I have worn both pairs a couple of times. I don't know if they are still in style. Were they ever?  Now I am worried, lol. (Just kidding. I don't get too worked up about what I wear!)

These pictures are all from last year. It appears I haven’t pleathered in 2024 🤭

3. Do you think that common interests or common values are the key to people getting along? Elaborate.

I think for sure common values are the key to people getting along... assuming the getting along is long term like a dating/marriage relationship and close friendships.

On a superficial level, common interests are important for relationships like friendships to first develop and thrive.

Will share an anecdote from my life that has helped come to the conclusions that I have come to...

A few years ago, I became friends with a woman when our paths started crossing a lot and we struck up conversations with each other whenever we saw each other. We were at very similar stations in life in terms of our ages, our kids' ages, both working part time, etc. We started to socialize and spend more time together. It was great to make a new friend in my late forties! It seems like friendships were so easy to form when kids were young and we moms were constantly around other moms in our cohort. As kids got older, it seemed harder to make new friends. So I was pleased to have a new friend whom I enjoyed spending time with. As we spent more time together, however, it became obvious that our values were pretty divergently different. We had a few respectful discussions about some of the areas where we disagreed. It seemed like once we realized we had some fundamentally different outlooks on pretty important topics (/our values), the friendship fizzled. I bore her no ill will, of course, and I don't think she did to me either. We never fought or spoke harsh words to each other. It was more like we both realized that the other was not going to become a truly good friend due to our different values. It was sad but since we were really only ever superficial type friends, it wasn't devastating or anything...

As for a relationship that is (hopefully!) going to be long term like a romantic relationship turn marriage, I think that similar values are way more important than common interests. Values have day to day implications in terms of how people live their lives/ prioritize spending time and monetary resources as well as eternal and legacy implications. I cannot imagine have dissimilar values with Donnie!

4. November 6 is National Nacho Day... do you like nachos? How do you like yours? Do you make them at home or only order out?

Oh yes, I like nachos! I just made some last week. I had made queso sauce when we had friends over for a Mexican meal for Taco Tuesday. We picked up the main entrees from a restaurant but we provided chips, salsa and queso at home. We had queso and chips left over. The next night for dinner, I made nachos. I didn't have a lot of fixins' since the idea came to me last minute.... I just had chips layered with rotisserie chicken and melted queso cheese over both. It was simple but delicious!

5. Have you spent any time in Washington D.C.? If so, what did you think? If not, is that a place you'd like to visit? What do you think about politics as a career choice?

I have never been to DC. I would like to visit to see some of the historic monuments.

I don’t think that politics as a career choice is good for anyone... except for the politician who gets to live off of taxpayers’ largess. Many career politicians seem to me to be grifters who enrich themselves at the taxpayers’ expense.

I admire politicians who owned businesses, became independently wealthy and then decided to run for office. Owning a successful business increases the chances dramatically that the person has leadership skills, is tenacious, is passionate about something other than him or herself, knows what it is like to work within a budget, knows the implications of high taxes, etc. To that end, I admire men like Vivek Ramaswamy and JD Vance.

In contrast, a number of politicians are nominated by their party by dint of pandering to some of the voting base of the party. Many of these candidates lack the skills and experience that would make a good politician. But that is beside the point for them... I have little respect for those politicians and the party leadership/ base that props them up.

6. Insert your own random thought here.

It’s been a day (Tuesday). I am writing this before any knowledge of the outcome of the presidential race (if we will even know by Wednesday...)

I mentioned in my previous post that Alyssa came home on Sunday in order to go to a Cincinnati Bengals game. Her roommate’s dad got the tickets, picked the girls up from Columbus, brought them home briefly before the game to change into Bengals gear, and then he took them to Cincinnati for the game. The plan was for me to take the girls back to Columbus on Sunday after the game.

But then plans changed. Her roommate’s family came into town for the weekend and decided to go out to dinner Sunday evening. That meant that we wouldn’t be bringing Avery back to Columbus with us. She would go back later after the family dinner.

But then late last week, Alyssa hadn’t receive her absentee ballot at school and really wanted to vote. We decided that Alyssa would miss the one class that she had on Monday in order to do early voting at our county board of elections. We would vote early on Monday and then I would take her back to school.

But then we realized that Monday was too late to do early voting. Alyssa would have to vote in person on Tuesday. That was less than ideal in terms of missing more classes. But then (the last “But then” (!)) Alyssa found out that classes on Tuesday at Ohio State were all online. So Alyssa would only miss the one class that she was going to miss on Monday (if she had been able to vote early on Monday) and she’d be able to vote in person in our county on Tuesday. Also, Avery’s plans changed and she asked if we could take her back to school on Tuesday which of course we could.

And so, after the Bengals game on Sunday, Alyssa stayed in town until today, Tuesday. On Monday, she did school work and we ran a couple of errands. On Tuesday, Alyssa and I voted in the morning (Donnie and Abby voted even earlier- Abby came home very briefly just to vote!), ran a quick errand and then drove down to Liberty Center where Alyssa did a little shopping, we had lunch at Brio, drove home, and then shortly after that, I took Avery and Alyssa back to Columbus. Lots of driving but it all got done and I was grateful to get to spend some time with Alyssa 💖

We ran into Avery at our polling place so I had to take a picture. If you don't get a picture of you and your I Voted sticker or even just a picture of your sticker, have you even voted??

At Liberty Center

Lunch at Brio- had not been there in years. We really liked it; it’s likely not too difficult to not mess up bread and pasta...🤭

It was a crazy warm day! I ran outside in shorts and a t-shirt later in the day.

On a deeper note, I prayed and prayed throughout the day...

  1. Nice pictures! I think that if you like something, wear it. Your pants look good on you. I am planning on making nachos. I am going to add ground beef for extra protein.

    1. Thank you, Susan! I have gain a few pounds since last year so I don´t think they would look too good on me now, lol! Nachos with beef is so good!

  2. I'm sure the extra time with your daughter was wonderful. Our Brio closed several years ago. Are you pleather pants hot? I always feel like I would be extra hot in them. Yours look great on you!

    1. Thanks, Lisa! That is too bad about your Brio closing. We were there at noon and it was shocking how few customers were in there eating. It was us and two other tables. The restaurant is huge; I´m sure they do better on the weekends. I don´t recall thinking that the pants made me feel hot. But it has been over a year since I have worn them so maybe?

  4. A. I totally agree about needing to have the same values as your spouse. I think my husband and I saw eye to eye on basics like having kids, working good jobs, etc but until maybe 2015 I still voted left, even though I wasn't sure I wanted to. I am glad my eyes were opened and we are on the same page. I too have had some friends like that - one in particular was a similar story and she went hard left after about 2018 and started pushing her kids into trans and stuff. She will still say hi if we see each other in town but we don't speak much. Oh, and her husband left her so she already got her comeuppance. That's good your kids wanted to make sure they voted; my son is only 17 but we went to the store yesterday and I had an extra sticker so he wore it because he would have voted for Trump if he could have!

    1. My husband and I didn´t discuss politics much when dating- politics were way less contentious then. We knew where each other stood (and we were on the same political stage) but both sides were closer to the middle than they are now. I guess my point is that I can´t imagine in today´s political climate to be on opposite sides as your spouse or anyone you´re so much as dating. That´s cool about your son!

  5. Good morning : ) You can definitely wear the pleather pants. They look cute on you. My nephew turned 18 in June and voted for the first time. Very exciting to see him smiling with his sticker. I'm so glad your daughter was able to vote. You should definitely make that trip to D.C! Have a great day!

    1. Thanks, Joyce! I am certain that I have gained a few pounds so I´m not sure if wearing the pleather now is a good idea or not... That´s great about your nephew! Alyssa was pretty excited to vote. She had been to the polls with me a few times over the years. I have been thinking about going to DC all day :).

    1. Thanks, Jim! The Lord always answers prayers, though of course he isn´t a genie in a bottle (or else it wouldn´t require faith to believe in him!) and we don´t always get the answer that we think we should get. Ohio is a great state, politically, that´s for sure :).

  8. Yay for a little extra time with your daughter... I never take my "I voted" sticker but mostly because we vote just after dinner and I'm coming home to put on Pj's anyway! I have always wanted to go to DC and see the monuments and check out all the lovely museums and the national zoo.

    1. Thanks, Joanne- you´re the only person I have read about today who has not been to DC besides me! My kids have all gone as the 8th graders take a trip there every year. Now it´s my turn!

  9. I completely agree about it getting harder to make new friends as we get older, and also about common values with friends and more importantly your spouse. Sorry that voting turned into an ordeal for your daughter, but how nice to get that extra time. And today we can breathe a sigh of relief with the election outcome.

  10. A lot of praying on Tuesday for sure. I appreciated your answer to question #3 with your life illustration. Glad all that driving was for good things. A lot of us are breathing a sigh of relief that the outcome happened early rather than being dragged out!

    1. Thanks, Ellen- my husband and I were talking about the dragging out last night. We were both surprised and pleased about the result and that the outcome was not dragged out!

  11. We eat nachos for dinner - it’s just the two of and we’re at that age where we look at things and say, “why not?” In fact we eat a lot of appetizers type foods for dinner along with a salad.

We’ve been praying mightily for God’s will all through this election. My husband worked our county’s party headquarters. I emotionally and spiritually was as ready as I could be had the results gone the other way. Just knowing that I’m a citizen of God’s eternal kingdom comforted me. Prayers should continue for those who will help to get our country back on track and prayers for h Trump’s safety. I also for myself, need to be mindful of those who do not share my views, to be gracious - showing Christ-like love and quite possibly we can lead many to be citizens of Gods kingdom. 🙏🏻

  13. I appreciated your thoughts on career politicians, and admiring those who found success in business or another career before getting involved in politics. I tend to think that having some real world experience in running a business, practicing law, teaching, or whatever it might be contributes to a more helpful and pragmatic lawmaker. We also tried to vote early and it just wasn't working out so we voted on election day - but didn't take a photo with our stickers! Ack! Hope you're having a great week!

    1. Thanks, Kym! I actually gave my sticker to Avery in the picture that I took of the girls (she was just going in to vote so that photo was staged, lol). I was pleasantly surprised that we didn´t have to wait a long time to vote. I think many took advantage of early voting. I heard there were lines for that (our county had early voting the weekend before the election. I was shocked at that!).

  14. I liked your example of friendship and the values, I agree that sometimes relationships can only go so deep if values are very different. I enjoyed your other answers too. I agree that politicians who have shown themselves hard workers, built themselves to where they are seem to be more trustworthy and understanding of what others are facing

    1. Thank you Kirstin! I think that my husband (who has no current interest in going into politics!) would make a good politician because he has great leadership skills, has dealt with complex problems with personnel, with problem solving in other areas and all the while making some profit as a small business owner...
