UPitP- Weekend of March 21-22
The second weekend of life in the midst of the pandemic is past us. Before the weekend ended, we had 1) Jacob with us and 2) an order for more movement restrictions in Ohio.
It was not a very exciting weekend as, well, nothing really exciting happened (except Jacob coming home!) Abby was supposed to have had a dance competition and Alyssa was supposed to have had a track meet. But, both of those items may not have happened for the girls anyway, had we not been in a pandemic.
Abby's foot is still not 100% healed (yes, going on four months looong months of incomplete healing). It is very slowly but surely healing. Abby has been in a boot for months now. She was tentatively given the green light to dance the week before the competition. So, she likely would have danced in the competition but it would not have been her finest competition simply because she went months without consistently dancing. There's also the possibility that the pain would have been too prohibitive to dance in the competition.
Alyssa is (was) running track this spring. She liked it quite a bit even though she hadn't run any meets yet. She was participating in short sprints, and, as of the last practice, had not been beaten by any girls doing short sprints when they raced during practice. Because so many students were doing track, not all students would be allowed to run at every track meet. The coach was going to divvy up the meets. We hadn't been told yet which meets Alyssa was going to do. So, some of the track kids would have been participating in a meet on Saturday; whether Alyssa would have been or not, we don't know.
Donnie had a board meeting in Dayton Saturday morning. The directors had a lot of decisions to make regarding running of the business during the pandemic. Abby and I went to the grocery store (Kroger) pretty early Saturday morning. I wanted to go at a time when fewer people were likely to be there. I was pleasantly surprised to see that I could purchase almost any produce item and meat item that I wanted to.
We stayed in the rest of Saturday. I don't remember exactly what we did- I know I read some during the day and we watched a movie in the evening. The girls hung out together during the day. We tracked Jacob's progress home from Florida.
On Sunday, we watched our church's online service. Donnie and Abby ran a couple of errands, including picking up a few items that I'd forgotten at the store the day before. In the afternoon, Donnie drove to Cincinnati to pick up Jacob from UC. It was great to see Jacob again. We were thankful that Jacob spent his time in Florida at a "non traditional" college spring break spot. One of his friend's parents own a place in Florida and that's where they stayed. It was a win- win. Jacob didn't have to pay anything to stay there and it was a win for us because it was a place with its own private beach so Jacob and his friends weren't with spring break party revelers.
We had planned to have family over for dinner to celebrate Uncle Doug's birthday on Sunday evening. But, we'd made the decision a few days prior to cancel the extended family dinner. For our dinner, I made a couple of items that I was going to serve for our guests including meatballs and vegetable dip that we all like. I had homemade cookie dough in the freezer. I was planning on baking the cookies for the birthday celebration. But since that wasn't happening, I baked some of the cookies for us for dessert. We hadn't had homemade treats in quite a while (most of us have been consuming sugar... just in the form of candy, not baked goods :).
We found out on Sunday afternoon that new changes were going to be in effect starting Monday night. All non essential traveling was going to be prohibited in Ohio. Almost every trip out of the house I've made the past three week would fall under the banner of "essential" travel so I've been doing that pretty regularly. It's kind of weird to think that driving to a friend's house would be illegal but I know that staying put is important to slow the spread of the virus.
I literally took one picture over the weekend. I thought I'd post some throwback photos- from 2019. The first couple are from August. The season was late summer. The occasion was a momentous one. The future was somewhat uncertain yet certain things seemed immutable- that, say, the college he was leaving home to attend would not send him home seven months later. On the weekend of Jacob's return home from school after completing about 3/4's of his first year on campus, here are some photos from the day he left home for college.
Jacob and Malcolm- friends since Malcolm's family became our neighbors over six years ago. Lots of shenanigans, lots of laughter, lots of sleep overs, lots of video gaming, lots of basketball playing and hopefully lots of (good) advice. Malcolm is older than Jacob so he already had some college under his belt when Jacob started.

September 24, 2019- Abby and I had lunch at Heather's after she had her braces removed
October 24, 2019- Alyssa was in Washington, DC with her school

Jacob's first year at school lasted longer than his car did. This old car bit the dust sometime in late fall (I think).
