Saved by the back roads

Up until Friday, Feb. 7th, the kids had not missed a day a school this school year due to bad weather. Earlier, in November I think, they had one two hour delay.

On Thursday, Feb. 6th, only about an inch of snow was predicted to fall Thursday into Friday. The chances of missing school on Friday seemed slim to me. I was subbing on Thursday and some students in one of my classes said they couldn't wait to have a snow day the following day and get out of school. I told the students that according to my weather app we wouldn't be getting enough snow for the school to call off school on Friday. It turns out that both predictions were correct- we only got about an inch of snow and school did get canceled!!

At first on Friday morning, we only had a two hour day. I say "only" but it was much appreciated. Two fewer hours to be in school and additional sleep are two things that the girls appreciate. However, a delay is nothing quite like the exquisiteness of having no school at all.

Before the two hour delay was up, the secretary at the school where I sub the most at texted me to see if I could come in that day. It would have been nice to sub on a two hour delay day (subs get paid the same for a day whether there's a delay or not) but I couldn't sub that day due to an appointment. I began to respond to the secretary's text when she texted me that school was going to be canceled for the day. I was shocked... When I looked outside, it looked like we'd had about an inch of snow- definitely enough for a delay but didn't seem like enough for a cancellation.

The school's official announcement of the cancellation came out of a few minutes after the text from the secretary. It said that some of the back roads in our area were slick so school was being canceled. I didn't see these back roads so I will have to take the school's word for it... Our street barely had any snow on it. But I wasn't complaining. The girls and I enjoyed our unexpected day off of school.

Based on what I saw when looking at our deck, we did not have enough snow to warrant a snow day...

This shows how little snow was in our driveway. I took this after Donnie left for work in the morning. Thank goodness for the economy that commerce doesn't cease for an inch of snow. I am fine with schools having a much more lenient policy of cancellation than every other sector of society- for the safety of students and for the enjoyment the kids experience when school gets canceled 😏
