Celebrating 13 years
Alyssa turned 13 on Saturday. I was happy for her that she didn't have to go to school on her birthday and was able to sleep in. Alyssa had requested (multiple upon multiple times) that she have cinnamon rolls for her birthday breakfast. I baked cinnamon rolls for her and brought her quasi breakfast in bed. She was sitting on her bed, but she wasn't in bed. She and Abby were hanging out. I brought both of them cinnamon rolls on our good china and lots of napkins. Abby was supposed to have spent the day working on a school project with several other students. But it got canceled at the last minute, freeing Abby up to hang out with Alyssa on her birthday. That worked out well.
The day passed in an unremarkable yet good way. Alyssa wasn't in school so of course it was good. At one point in the afternoon, the girls and I went to Dorothy Lane Market. I told Alyssa should could pick up a small pack of cupcakes for her birthday celebration the next day. Alyssa isn't crazy about cake but knows that cake is a quintessential birthday celebration staple. I suggested she get a small pack of cupcakes for her birthday party guests. When we arrived at the store, we discovered that DLM was having a bacon based celebration replete with a live band, a person dressed up as a piece of bacon and of course lots of bacon based samples. After eating one sample on their own, the girls called me over to where the sample was to entice me to buy it (oh, those smart marketers and their free samples). I looked at the bread that they had spread their Vermont sea salt butter on. (I looked at the price of the Vermont butter and that was an easy no; I was hoping the bread would be a little cheaper :)). "What kind of bread is that?" I asked the employee who was standing next to the bread/ Vermont butter sample. "It's miche bread," she said in a tone of voice which implied that I should have recognized the bread as miche immediately. I'd never heard of miche bread before; while I'd grown up with homemade bread, my mom kept things rural Hoosier simple and made such bread as "white" and "wheat" bread. I make a couple of breads myself, notably, white and wheat bread :). The miche bread looked like it was healthy and the girls loved it so I bought some. And we all learned what miche bread is!!
Sunday we went to the early church service so that I could take Alyssa and her best friend Averyice skating bowling. We were going to go ice skating at an outdoor ice skating rink in Dayton Sunday afternoon. The temperature was supposed to get to 35 degrees on Sunday. When we got out of church, the temperature was 25 degrees and it felt like 14. I asked Alyssa if maybe we should reconsider ice skating. She was in agreement that we should reconsider. We decided to go bowling instead. The girls had a good time together bowling, laughing when we did poorly (we all had gutter balls at some point!) and celebrating when we got strikes (we all got strikes!).
In the evening, Donnie's family came over to celebrate. We ate desserts, chatted, and Alyssa opened her presents. I hope the weekend was as special to her as she is to us. Now she just needs to not get teenagery on us...
I made this chocolate chip pecan pie on Alyssa's birthday. No one besides Alyssa and me likes pecan pie so she and I ate it over the course of a few days. Was delicious, if I do say so myself.

This is miche bread
When Jacob found out that we were going to DLM, he asked me for two Laura's sugar cookies from the DLM bakery. I bought him two and he insisted that I have half a one. I appreciated his generosity in sharing the cookies that I bought for him but I was in a sugar stupor most of the weekend and didn't appreciate my half of the cookie as much as I would have on a different weekend :).

This was Alyssa's main birthday dessert- it's a big ol' pan of turtle brownies. I weighed the baked brownies; was curious about the weight as the baking dish felt heavy. The pan of brownies weighed 7 pounds and 15.9 ounces. The glass baking dish empty weighs 3 1/2 pounds which means we had about 4 1/2 pounds of brownies.
They didn't disappoint flavor wise, thankfully (because 4 1/2 pounds of mediocre brownies would be a shame ;).

Our main gift to her was a new iPad. She has an iPad and uses it a lot but wanted a new one for new features a better battery charge
