A Hot Weekend (but at least soccer didn't get canceled)

Last weekend was the weekend of rain and this weekend was the weekend of heat. I know it's still summer but normally by this time of year, temperatures have started to turn. No such luck this weekend.

On Friday, I was feeling not a small bit sorry for myself. The Air Force Marathon was on Saturday. If I'd been running it, on Friday, I would have had to go to the marathon expo to get my bib and other marathon accouterments. I had planned on running the marathon but during the summer, I experienced an injury that prevented me from training for it. On Friday, there was no need for me to go to the expo  and I began to feel sorry for myself; as a result, I engaged in online retail therapy. I know that spending money is not a mentally healthy way to assuage feeling sorry for oneself (not to mention it's not a financially healthy habit) but I could make the argument that I sort of kind of needed that which I bought. These shipping options were unique... to say the least.

Yes, I'll choose free shipping over paying $19.00 to arrive on the same day...

Alyssa's soccer team was in a tournament over the weekend. It was Ohio Premier's (OP) tournament in Columbus. Donnie booked hotel rooms for Friday and Saturday nights for Alyssa and him. When the schedule was released, we realized that Donnie and Alyssa would only need to spend Saturday night in Columbus. Friday night was not necessary because Alyssa's first game on Saturday wasn't until 1:15 pm. Donnie canceled the Friday night reservation.  Not needing to spend Friday night in Columbus was great for three reasons- First, we were able to spend more time together before Donnie and Alyssa had to depart. Second, sleep is usually better in one's own bed. Third, one night in a hotel instead of two saved money which is always a good thing (retail therapy does not pay for itself...).

Saturday morning, I ran a slow six miles instead of an even slower 26.2... It was crazy hot out for running long distances, even in the morning. I was outside around 10:15 am saying goodbye to Donnie and Alyssa and realizing that if I'd been able to run the marathon, I would be running that very moment and would be way hotter and more tired than would be ideal.

The teens and I spent the next day and half together at home. We didn't do anything exciting- we ran errands, tidied up, went to church, Jacob hung out with friends and Abby had dance.

Abby and I picked these up at Wal-mart. I don't normally buy those wacky M&M flavors- I stick to regular, peanut, peanut butter and almond ones. But, Abby and I were both intrigued enough to try these. They were disappointing in that they tasted nothing like pecan pie but satisfying in that they were good.

Meanwhile in Columbus, Alyssa played her first games with her new team, Ohio Elite. The girls tied their first game, 1-1. Donnie said we dominated possession but unfortunately our opponents got one in. Alyssa's team had to win the second game to move on to the semi finals. If they won their second game, they'd move on to the semi finals on Sunday. If they tied or lost their second game, they'd play a consolation game on Sunday. Alas, they lost their second game 0-2. They were playing for third place on Sunday.

Ohio, we have a problem...this was our town's temp on Saturday afternoon- Alyssa was only playing about an hour and a half away so it was very similar there. The heat definitely played a role in the second game- the other team had six or seven subs that were used strategically to give players rest. Alyssa's team had two subs so resting a lot was not an option for them.

The Embassy Suites where they stayed was undergoing construction. Alyssa was disappointed with the lobby ambiance... She did say that the rooms were very nice so at least there was that.

Her Sunday game occurred while I was at church. I texted Donnie and told him he could give me text updates throughout the game (per usual when one of us can't attend a game). I turned my phone to silent mode but kept it in sight during the service (it felt merely mildly, not egregiously, inappropriate to have my phone out to read texts during church). About halfway through church/ the game (the two events were oddly in sync with each other(!)), Alyssa's team was down 0-2. They were playing a local team, Beavercreek Celtic, which is a good team. Celtic game in second place last year in all of Ohio South. It looked like a loss was certain. But, the girls rallied and scored 3 goals in the second half and kept Celtic from scoring. Donnie said that in the last few seconds of the game, Alyssa stopped Celtic's striker from taking a shot. Alyssa knows Celtic's striker from ODP and they're friends (off the soccer field, of course!!). It was a great win for the girls. The win meant nothing from the tournament's perspective but it was the team's first win and from being two goals down, no less.

So that was soccer. Donnie and Alyssa arrived home while Abby and I were at dance. It was great seeing everyone and being together at last.
